In our previous session, for those who weren't there, we were looking at that dreaded sin of David against Uriah the Hittite and Bathsheba. And in David's mercy, we know Nathan was going to teach him one almighty lesson. We've read it in the story of 2 Samuel and its 12th chapter. The lesson was in verse 14 of that very chapter that the child born of David shall surely die.
- 0:33
Now when I say that phrase, shall surely die, where might our minds go to? Well, may I suggest that you're thinking of Genesis 2 verse 17. The day thou eatest thereof, thou shalt surely die. And so what we begin to realize is that the child that was born of that deception and that iniquity, in all of its insidiousness, the child represented sin.
- 1:05
A child that was unnamed, a child that was uncircumcised, and a child, frankly, that was born of sin. As Romans says in chapter 5, By one man sin entered into the world, and death passed on to all men. As Jesus Christ said to Nicodemus, That which is born of the flesh is flesh.
- 1:29
And therefore the child born was filled of David's humanity, a fallen nature. And the ironic thing is that the child born of that deception was innocent. Absolutely innocent of David's sin. Yet the child bore the consequences of it. Never the guilt. And so that child, a son of David, profoundly speaks to us the death of the son of David in his flesh.
- 2:03
But, what's remarkable, is that there was another child born. In the very same chapter. The child that died, well, 2 Corinthians 5 verse 21, shows it was Jesus Christ. As a symbol, he was made sin for us who knew no sin. But the other child in the 24th verse, was to be the one in whom Yahweh loved.
- 2:29
And his title was David Yahweh, beloved of Yahweh, the son of David. Profoundly speaking of what would become the son of Yahweh. An anointed son. A son who would be sitting upon the throne of David. And his name, of course, was Peace. So if the child that died represented the son of David in Jesus in his death, what might you think Solomon speaks of?
- 3:02
This is going to be the son of David in his resurrection. Solomon prefigures the resurrected son of David. The resurrected Christ. And so those two boys in 2 Samuel chapter 12 are the lesson of what we know to be the doctrine of the atonement. A son of David had to die as a representative of sin.
- 3:29
And a son of David had to be born again in the newness of life as a representative of God. For a son of David came to die. And a son of God came to live. And what's fascinating about these two men, David and Solomon, we have to see them together. Because those two men represent two distinct phases of the work of the Lord Jesus Christ.
- 3:59
We must see them together in the lens of prophetic typology to see the story of Jesus Christ. So this entire exhortation is going to be looking from the beginning of David in its 16th chapter of the first book of Samuel right to the birth of Solomon today that we're reading in 2 Samuel chapter 12.
- 4:20
And you will appreciate, because it's an exhortation, we are going to go swift and brisk. We've got quite a bit of content to go to. And the exhortation is going to be, brothers and sisters and friends, the type to confirm to us that the hope of what is Yisrael was there declared in the life of David, the son of Jesse.
- 4:43
So let's begin, shall we, in the first book of Samuel in chapter 16. And we'll see that we begin with a child born in Bethlehem. called the Beloved. And this young man was to grow up in a season where the prophetic office mourned as God rejected the leaders of Israel. And in verse 13, in the midst of his brethren, before his father, the Beloved who was anointed as the Spirit descended upon him.
- 5:15
This is Jesus Christ, is it not? This is Jesus Christ here, anointed in the midst of his brethren before his father, as the Spirit of the Lord came down upon him. And then if we go to chapter 17, I told you we were going to go quit. We go to chapter 17, we now know what the Messiah came to accomplish.
- 5:31
The Messiah came to accomplish salvation against the giant of sin. He's introduced in the 17th chapter as the Redeemer, come to defeat the one who opposed Israel, to overthrow the enemies. And we are told specifically in the very opening of the Messiah that he will defeat the enemy. He will secure victory, not just for himself, but for the followers so they can master and overcome the Philistine within, the infidel within, sin in the flesh.
- 6:02
And then we come to chapter 18 and we look at chapter 19 rather quickly. The Savior, now the Messiah, the Beloved, the Roaring Lion, the Shepherd of Israel, well he's embraced by the people and the people love him. But at the same time, simultaneously, he is opposed by the authorities. And the authorities, as we know so surely, they were consumed with jealousy.
- 6:26
As fear sank into their souls, as they conspire and plot and attempt to kill the Messiah, the Beloved, the Son of Jesse. And now the Messiah is a fugitive as he evades the authorities, just as we see of Jesus Christ. As we've seen, friends, over the course of the last day or two, what would befall of the Messiah next, might we think?
- 6:51
Because believe it or not, we are following the life of Jesus in David in chronological order. Chapter by chapter is the path that Messiah would tread in the fierce storm of human flesh. For the struggle of Christ was that he had David's flesh. So, if we move over to chapter 21,
- 7:19
sorry, chapter 20, Messiah is a fugitive, he's evading the authorities, and what we see is in verse 8 and verse 16, Jonathan, Saul's very own son, covenants with David. And what we find is in the life of Jesus Christ, as he's a fugitive from the Jewish authorities, what we begin to realize is there's going to be a faithful Jewish remnant born of the old order that are going to give themselves wholly to their Messiah and align themselves with him.
- 7:55
And then we come to chapter 21. And in the 21st chapter, we see the Redeemer now fleeing to the place called Knob. And in verse 6, he's given hallowed bread. Now, incidentally, in Mark chapter 2, and verse 23 to 28, Jesus is going to quote this very incident in 1 Samuel 21. And when Jesus is speaking to his disciples, as he refers to this episode, he teaches them that the hallowed bread is his words.
- 8:32
And that his words, the bread of life, angels' food, the bread of heaven, takes precedence over religious rituals and rules. And so in the 21st chapter of 1 Samuel, the Messiah, the Savior of Israel, the roaring lion, the shepherd, and the psalter, well, he's the bread of life. What always comes with bread?
- 8:56
As we find out rather shortly, wine is always with bread. So if you look at verse 8 to 15, the Savior now goes to the king known as Achish. And the king Achish, his name is Terah. He's a Philistine. He's a gentle. The meaning of his name literally means terror. And he's the king of Gath.
- 9:25
And what does Gath mean? Well, lo and behold, it's the word that means wine, press. And so we see in the 21st chapter of 1 Samuel, the Messiah is the bread of life in which he will pour out his soul in blood. This is bread and wine. And what was the issue with the Lord Jesus Christ?
- 9:52
As David, his forefather, went to the Gentile king, it was Jesus Christ who would be led to the Gentile authorities. A time of testing, a time of trial, a time of terror in which his blood would be shed and the wine press would prevail. Bread and wine. But what might we anticipate next in the story of David in the 22nd chapter of 1 Samuel?
- 10:21
The Savior now, you'll notice, in verse 1 to 2, he gathers followers and you'll notice all of the followers of David here, the beloved, the son of Jesse, are in distress, it tells us they're in debt and all of them are discontented. Do you know these men here we're seeing in 1 Samuel 22 in the first two verses, these are the same men in 2 Samuel 23 verse 13 who became the mighty men of David.
- 10:52
These are his mighty men. They're not so mighty here, are they? Because as we've said, they're in distress, they're in debt and they're discontented. But they're going to become mighty men. And whom do they follow? They follow, in verse 2, the captain of their salvation. These are going to be the same men who are going to help David, their Messiah, rule in the kingdom of Israel.
- 11:20
What does Jesus say in Matthew chapter 5? He says, my followers are poor in spirit, mourn, and they are in hunger and in thirst, they are discontented, and he says, these are the people, these are the very people that shall inherit the earth. Brothers and sisters, you and I are with David in the cave here, in symbol, in debt, discontented, and in distress, but we shall become the mighty men of Christ Jesus, a glorified multitude, the saints.
- 12:03
We follow Christ all the way so we can help him in the future build the kingdom of God on earth and help him rule as kings and priests. But we've come to 22 of the first book of Samuel. If you look at verse 18, we've got a baddie now. You'll remember him. He's called Doeg the Edomite.
- 12:25
And you'll notice in verse 18, Doeg the Edomite smites the priests at Nob at Saul's behest. And what we see happening here is flesh. Flesh is working through Israel's political order in its hatred of their Messiah to bring down the Aaronic priesthood. The Aaronic priesthood is brought down in the 22nd chapter of 1 Samuel.
- 12:47
And you'll notice if you flick over, I told you we're going quickly, you go to chapter 23 in verse 6, Abiathar, the high priest who witnessed the priests being slayed, he comes to David. What does he bring to David? He brings him the high priest's ephod. In other words, in 1 Samuel chapter 23, we see the priesthood transferred to Messiah, the king of Israel elect.
- 13:18
In other words, this is Hebrews chapter 7 in which Christ became the priest after Melchizedek. The priesthood has been transferred in type to one who would become. And then, we come to chapter 23. in chronological order, what might we anticipate next in the 23rd chapter? Well, you'll see Messiah, known as the Beloved, he goes and saves Kelar from the Philistines.
- 13:54
The Redeemer here has come to the city to save. And if you look at verse 9, Saul, of the old order, is secretly practicing mischief against the Messiah. And in verse 12, God revealed to the Beloved that the men of Kelar seek to betray him and deliver him up. So where else in the Bible might we find a Messiah entering a city as a saviour only then to be delivered to the Gentiles by the very people he came to save?
- 14:30
This is Jesus entering into Jerusalem. A few days before his crucifixion, David has come to save and the very city has betrayed him. So what might we anticipate next in the chronology of Jesus Christ? What befell of Christ after he was betrayed by the city? Well, we don't need to turn to the Gospels because it's already been told us in 2 Samuel 23 and verse 18.
- 15:04
Jonathan now is going to meet David for the final time and in this final meeting between them there's a covenant going to be made and it's a curious place. Frankly, it's a curious word where this final covenant would be served. One word. Where was it? in the wood. The wood.
- 15:35
And how interesting in John chapter 19 a few of Jesus' clandestine sympathizers among the ruling class like Jonathan such as Nicodemus and Joseph of Arimathea were going to secretly identify with Christ at his cross. a tree and the wood now becomes the very place of that covenant and David is strengthened. So what might we anticipate next in the story of David if in figure now we're at the crucifixion?
- 16:08
what happens next in the story of Jesus Christ? Well we would predict and hypothesize that we're going to see a tomb. So we just look at chapter 24 and we look at the third verse David now comes to the sheepcoats and the sheepcoats is where the shepherd looked after his flock and here is David laying down his life for his flock because there's a cave.
- 16:40
Now you might remember yesterday young people friends brothers and sisters that the cave is the symbol of what? It always is the symbol of death. The Abrahamic patriarchs were placed in caves Lazarus went into a cave and at the place of the wood where a covenant was made Jesus now goes in type Messiah David goes into the cave and he's not alone is he?
- 17:12
Because in verse 4 Saul enters into that very same cave and you'll notice then that David then arose and cut off the skirt of Saul's robe and we know absolutely explicitly that that phrase cut off Saul's robe is repeated in chapter 15 verse 27 to 28 and chapter 28 verse 17 that in the cave and only in the cave the kingdom was rent from Saul.
- 17:43
What happened in the crucifixion of Jesus? I believe the veil was rent and in the tomb the Messiah cut off the kingdom from Saul and what we begin to realize is in the figure of the tomb in the cave we've got the shepherd holding the very token of kingship in his hand. He's got the kingdom in his hand but the Messiah was never to take it by force and that was David's problem.
- 18:15
He would not take the kingdom by force and Jesus in John chapter 18 verse 36 he says and he declares that he did not come to take Israel by force but by crucifixion. He came to take the kingdom in his death and in his resurrection and speaking of the resurrection notice in verse 8 David arose holding the token of the kingship in his hand out of the cave and you'll never have a guess what that word arose means.
- 18:47
If you look at that word and you go to Isaiah 26 and verse 19 it is a word used for the resurrection David resurrected out of the cave of the tomb holding the token of the kingship in his hand and by the way just to make the point even clearer when David came out of the tomb what is the description of him in verse 11 he came out without evil or transgression in his hand where he did not sin David was resurrected out of the tomb sinless in type with no transgression after the wood after the persecution after the order of Melchizedek after he came to defeat the giant of sin after he was made the Messiah in the midst of his brethren chronological order the life of the Lord Jesus Christ so what might we think happens next in the story of Jesus through the life of David well if you look at chapter 25 and verse 1 Samuel now has died and in Acts chapter 3 and verse 24 the moment Jesus was resurrected out that tomb and the moment he ascended into the heavens Acts chapter 3 verse 24 declares to us that the words of the prophets were fulfilled and here out of the tomb as he's resurrected Samuel has died the words of the prophets have been fulfilled and notice in verse 2 to 5 this is a really famous chapter isn't it verse 2 to 5 David now sends servants to a stiff necked man called Fool his name's Nabal what happened after Jesus ascended well I believe we come then to the book of Acts and in the book
- 21:00
of Acts what we realise is that Jesus' apostles his witnesses his followers are sent out to a very stubborn nation and what we're finding here in 1 Samuel 25 is that in verse 2 and in verse 5 David is going to send messages to a man called Fool and what are they doing they're preaching peace to this man and notice David's not present would you agree with him on that one he's not there the Messiah isn't there but his witnesses speak on his behalf we know they speak on his behalf because if you look at verse 9 they say all the words of David in the name of David and what was the response of Nabal the man called Fool the stiff-necked obstinate Fool basically he rejects the authority of the servants and rejects David as his king and we see there a figure of the apostles doing the work of Christ in the book of Acts as they go out to the Jews and the Jews just like Nabal their predecessor were foolish and obstinate and stiff-necked and they refused the authority of their Messiah called Jesus Christ the son of David after the flesh the son of God but David he's not done with Nabal what's he going to do the story is telling itself isn't it he's going to get for himself a a bride a Jewish bride and her name is Abigail Abigail and Abigail's name means the father is joyful and how joyful the father must have been when the first Jewish remnant aligned themselves to the Lord Jesus Christ and figure-headed the bride of Christ notice what she is
- 22:54
in verse 3 she's a woman of good understanding and beautiful countenance of good understanding what a remarkable phrase to use of the bride of good understanding and of beautiful countenance what is the work of the bride of Christ to understand doctrine so that we can bring forth fruits that's Abigail and what does she do in verse 23 to verse 28 she believed the words not of David the words of his witnesses and aligns herself to a redeemer and what happened of Nabal what befell of Nabal he turned to stone didn't he he turned to stone in verse 37 and Paul writing to Corinth he says in the second letter in the third chapter in the third verse Israel are a stony heart of the law and here Abigail becomes the first Jewish bride of her Messiah and Romans 7 tells us in the first four verses that Abigail would have been redeemed from the widowhood of the law but the Messiah is not done we come to chapter 26 and this time Saul is still in pursuit of King David he's still in pursuit of him he's relentless he's a madman isn't he the king of Israel and then in verse 12 you notice that Saul was put in a powerless deep sleep he's in sleep he's in a slumber is King Saul not only him all of his men are in a slumber and a sleep and what does David do have you noticed what David does here in verse 12 he comes over he creeps over and he takes the sword or the spear of Saul in other words David the Messiah disarmed
- 25:02
the king of Israel as he slept do you know what Colossians 2 verse 15 says it says that Jesus disarms the spiritual powers and triumphs over them Romans 11 and verse 8 talking about Israel Romans 11 says Israel have been given the spirit of slumber in their eyes they will not see or hear and what befell of Saul was the befell of Israel when Jesus ascended they were put under a sleep and Jesus disarmed them of their powers it's all been told we've read the story of Jesus before in the life of this man and where is David by the way in verse 13 of this chapter where is he well he climbs up a high mountain David has ascended as Israel are rendered impotent he's in ascension and what was to happen to the Lord Jesus Christ as Israel slumbered and slept in their spiritual disarmament Jesus Christ had risen in his ascension but the saviour is not done we come to chapter 27 the saviour now Messiah David in verse 1 and in verse 6 to 7 departs to serve who the Philistines the Messiah goes to the Philistines to hide away from Israel what happens next in the story of Jesus once the Jewish bride had been formed what was to happen next remember in Acts the Jews first and then the Gentiles and the work of the apostle Paul in Acts chapter 28 in verse 28 salvation now has been sent to the Gentiles as David finds himself now living with the Philistines during Israel's hardening and if you look at verse 6 David acquires a city and the city is called
- 27:12
Ziklag it means fountain and you'll notice in verse 6 that this city Ziklag was going to be David's personal possession for Judah in other words we're seeing here in 1 Samuel 27 the inclusion of the Gentiles into the kingdom of Israel this is you and I in chapter 27 and David do you see him ever go back to Israel no he remains with the Philistines in Gentile territory grafting a portion of Gentile territory for Israel until he receives the kingdom and in Luke chapter 19 Jesus says I go to a far country to receive for myself a kingdom and then says Christ Jesus then will I return it's all mapped out but we're not done yet are we because we come to chapter 28 of the story of Messiah and you'll notice here now an infamous chapter where the Philistines are gathering for battle and in verse 6 Saul well he's found inquiring of God does God answer Saul at this point in the 28th chapter shake or nod he doesn't verse 6 there was no answer given to Saul in the 28th chapter so it sends him into his descent in verse 7 as he goes to a woman with a familiar spirit we call her the witch of end all eerie stuff isn't it the witch of end all what did the Lord Jesus Christ warn the Jews about AD 70 in Matthew chapter 24 and verse 24 he says to them leading to AD 70 apostate Israel will turn to false messiahs and right at the same time the Philistines are preparing war against Israel and there is the leader of Israel
- 29:17
turning to a false witch it's all played out by the way in verse 17 whose words does Saul hear from the grave he hears the words of Samuel and Samuel's words from the grave condemn him his rulership and the kingdom of Israel to its doom and in AD 70 the prophets of ancient times had long passed but their words were echoed in the scriptures always for telling that Israel would lead to apostasy that would bring in the Roman siege in other words brothers and sisters prior to the events of AD 70 the words of the prophets were screaming at them and condemning them just as we've seen here with Saul and the prophet Samuel but we're not done yet are we because we come to chapter 30 of 1 Samuel whilst the Philistines are waging war on Israel where is Messiah well he's with the Gentiles of course he is he's with the Gentiles now at Ziklag that little portion prescribed for the Gentiles in the hope of Israel grafted into the kingdom of God and what's he doing in Ziklag at the same time of the Philistine siege against the rulers of Israel we are finding the Messiah with the Gentiles rescuing captives from Amalek that represents flesh and who is he going to secure he's going to save two brides one is going to be a Gentile and the other one is going to be a Jew a Jewish and Gentile bride is being saved during the Israeli siege from the Gentiles as Christ lies with the Gentiles in the figure of David as it says in Ephesians chapter 4 and verse 8
- 31:33
Christ Jesus was going to lead captivity captive but he's not done yet is he because we come to chapter 31 of 1 Samuel and at this point Israel have been now subdued by the Gentiles and what would be fall of Saul and I've given you the clue he fell upon his own sword and you'll notice in verse 9 to 10 his entire body is desecrated and dishonored what did Jesus Christ prophesy in Luke 21 verse 24 he said Israel shall be trodden down by the Gentiles and shall fall by the edge of the sword it's played out here with Saul zealotry state suicide brought about by the Roman siege as the priesthood and the body of the temple is humiliated just like the king called Saul the mosaic order is now gone the old order is put to ruin and it's now going to usher in the kingdom of Messiah but brothers and sisters friends the kingdom is not yet to be established not yet there's a few more things to go before the kingdom of God the kingdom Messiah is established because if you go now to 2 Samuel chapter 1 I'm out of breath to be honest with you 2 Samuel chapter 1 after the death of Saul and the slaughter of Amalek David remains with his followers in Gentile territory for how many days is he with the Gentiles for two days and how long has Christ Jesus remained with the Gentiles before the kingdom of God arrives I believe it's around 2 thousand years that Messiah has dwelt with his Gentile congregation !
- 33:40
and when the time arrives and it is soon brothers and sisters going to arrive we are told in Zechariah 12 and verse 7 that when he returns Jesus Christ will dwell with who first he will dwell with the tents of Judah so who might we anticipate anointing David in 2 Samuel chapter 2 and verse 11 who's he going to be well believe it or not it is Judah who anoints David as king in the place called Hebron which means union but there's a problem when David is made Messiah and he's anointed by Judah we've got a kingdom divided a total kingdom division we've got the house of Saul against the house of Judah nations are not unified as the house of Saul and David are divided and we know brothers and sisters it's going to be the work of the prophet Elijah who is going to be sent out to those scattered Jews the house of Saul Ephraim Israel and he's going to regather those Jews and bring them to their Messiah and as Ezekiel 20 in verse 38 tells us that the Jews who oppose shall be purged and then we come to the fifth chapter of 2 Samuel in chronological order Israel now finally embrace the Messiah as their own and what do they say to David the house is unified they say behold we are thy bone and thy flesh what is it that the Jews denounce to the Lord Jesus Christ he is not one of us he is not one of us and the story of 2 Samuel is that when he comes and unifies Israel they will admit that
- 35:35
he is their flesh and he is their bone Jesus Christ is not returning back as a Christian is he he's returning as a Jew a Hebrew as Ezekiel 37 says and verse 22 at that time there will be one nation one king no more two nations Jesus Christ will unite the house of Israel and funnily enough in this very same chapter what does the Messiah capture he captures Jerusalem Jerusalem now in verse 6 to 7 has been made the capital as Israel now are unified under their Messiah and as Romans 11 verse 26 says that all Israel shall be saved and they shall be saved in Zion then in 2 Samuel 6 we're nearly there 2 Samuel 6 the ark now is brought to Zion the glory of God is brought to Zion as his majesty is proclaimed as Isaiah 2 verse 3 says that the law shall go forth from Zion and we remember poor Ruzza don't we we feel a bit sorry for Ruzza in the kingdom of God as Ruzza found out unfortunately it will be death to flesh and the kingdom won't be established by man's means but it will be established through divine authority as David in verse 14 of 2 Samuel 6 becomes a king priest !
- 37:17
And then 2 Samuel 7 Messiah has rest from his enemies and now he wants to build a house a house is to be built as Isaiah 56 says that when Jesus is king in that cosmic restoration a new temple will be built and what is the final events I am shattered what is the final events the final events of David are laid out in chapter 8 to 11 that with his mighty men Messiah begins his seven Gentile military campaigns to subdue the enemies of Israel and it's seven not eight not six seven and we go to Revelation chapter 10 and we see the rainbow angel a rainbow angel that is the manifestation of the saints in militant motion and the saints have one foot on the earth because the beast of the earth has been subdued and the other foot is on the beast of the sea because the beast of the sea has been subdued and what is echoed out of its mouth
- 38:41
thunders the seven campaigns of Christ to subdue the Gentile authorities as Revelation 2 says Christ and his glorified saints will rule among the nations and convert them and only them in the story of David and only at that point it's taken a while is a new regime Solomon is born Solomon the glorious phase the man who builds the temple to provide Israel with the pinnacle of their strength and the fortuneness of their fame as Jesus says in Matthew chapter 26 verse 29 Solomon in all of his splendor the final chapter I know I've gone on a little bit for an excitation but this is the British way to be honest with you don't nod your heads is Isaiah 9 final verse Solomon in all of his splendor a man whose name means peace famous words to us verse six for unto us a child is born and unto us a son is given and the government shall be on his shoulder and his name shall be wonderful counselor the mighty God the everlasting father the prince of peace and the increase of his government and peace there shall be no end and he will sit upon the throne of David and David saw that entire similitude played out we have just followed the entire works of Jesus Christ and as Jesus speaks about his future reign do you know what he refers to his future reign as being he tells he tells us in Matthew chapter 12 and verse 42 he says when I return the world will know that the greater than Solomon is here thank you oh Thank you.
