Now we saw yesterday, didn't we, David in his thwart against the enemy that was Goliath of Gath. Now when Goliath came and engaged in the battlefield and called out to Israel, I don't think Goliath for one moment wanted to fight Israel. I really don't. I don't think he wanted the armies of the Philistines to actually engage in conflict with the host of Israel.
- 0:27
In fact, I'm not going to tell you. Goliath is. Goliath is going to tell us in 1 Samuel 17 and verse 8 where he taunts Israel. And look what he says. He says, why are ye in battle array? Not that Goliath spoke in a sinister British accent, of course. But we'll go with it. Why are ye in battle array? Am I not a Philistine? And ye servants to Saul?
- 1:02
Choose you a man for you and let him come down to me. The words of Goliath land on one man, and one man only. In all of its irony, the man he talks about just so happens to be the king of Israel. And to add more irony to it, the man he mentions just so happens to be a giant.
- 1:26
Saul was a giant, wasn't he? In 1 Samuel chapter 9, we're told specifically that Saul was head and shoulders above all of the host of Israel. In fact, we're also told in 1 Samuel 9 that he was made captain over the host of Israel. Might we remember what the request was of Israel when they chose their captain and their king?
- 1:50
What was the request they gave? They said to Samuel, and mark the words in 1 Samuel 8 and verse 20, Give us a king that will go out before us and fight our battles. And now there is a great battle in which we've got two warriors, two giants, one of the Philistines of flesh and one of Israel.
- 2:10
And I believe, friends, and I'm sure you'll agree with me on this one, that all eyes of Israel were on the giant of Israel. I think Saul felt the pressure. Saul is greatly afraid of the giant of Gath. Can you see that in verse 11? The warrior, the captain, the king is fearful of the man called Goliath.
- 2:33
Now, what we know of Goliath, one thing we are absolutely certain of, that when Goliath came to Israel, he was looking at the king. And the king, Saul that we know him of, all the way through his life, was focused on the outward show. Would you agree with me on that one? He was obsessed and transfixed on how he appeared to the people.
- 2:58
When Samuel condemned Saul, he said, oh, not in front of the people. Please don't tell me off in front of the people. He was obsessed with it. And also one thing we know about King Saul, he was also fixated about rituals and legalism. Let me remind you, in 1 Samuel 13, he offers his own sacrifice to Saul, and he was forbidden to do so, but he did it.
- 3:21
In 1 Samuel chapter 14, he issued some arbitrary law about oaths. In 1 Samuel chapter 15, he disobeys Samuel and Yahweh and kept the best of the sheep and oxen to offer sacrifice. And Samuel has to condemn him and say, to obey Saul is better to sacrifice. Saul wasn't just a man on the outward appearance.
- 3:45
No, no, no, friends and brothers and sisters. Saul was all about legalism only when it suited him. And it was always marked by disobedience. After all, we know that legalism could never save. Romans 7 and 8 tells us that, that the law failed as a deliverer because the law exposed sin. It could never save.
- 4:13
And so in this context, if David typifies the Lord Jesus Christ, who might you think the king called Saul speaks of? Who else in the Bible was obsessive about the outward appearance? Who else was fixated upon rituals and legalism and always failed to keep the spirit of the law and they were marked by disobedience?
- 4:46
The Jewish elite. The Pharisees. The Sanhedrin. And the Jewish elders. So here's a few links. Can you see those links there between? Just a few of them. Can you see? And here's some more.
- 5:06
Between Saul and the Jewish elders. You know, we know Saul in 1 Samuel chapter 9 was a handsome man. He was beautiful on the outward appearance. Anyone know what Saul's name means? His name means asked. And you know the name Saul? It has the exact same Hebrew letters as the word Sheol.
- 5:34
His name literally means asked of the grave. Because the grave keeps asking for souls. Saul is a man whose name means the grave. And he was beautiful on the outward appearance. What did the Lord Jesus Christ say to the Pharisees? In his final condemnation of the Jewish elite in Matthew chapter 23. He looks at them and what does he call them?
- 6:00
He calls them whited sepulchres. On the outward he says. You are beautiful in appearance. But inwardly he says. You are just dead men's bones. Because they typify the ancient king of Israel. A man called asked of the grave. Saul. And so when we open 1 Samuel chapter 17. And we look at David and Goliath.
- 6:33
And we see the giant of sin confronting Israel. What's really happening in the story of parabolic Bible prophecy. Is we've got a man of sin. Who approaches Israel of the law. And he says. Come and fight me. Choose you a man. Whoever wins will be the master. Bleats out Goliath. And Saul. A man of the law.
- 6:58
Tremble in fear. And he responds. I cannot save them from sin. And there in the middle of the drama. Steps up a young Bethlehemite.
- 7:18
A man of Judah. A son of Jesse. A shepherd. And he's going to do what Jesus did. In Hebrews chapter 2 verse 15. One who will rescue them. Who through fear of death. All their lifetime. Were subject to bondage. At the point where the people trembled under the law. A deliverer came. Called the beloved.
- 7:47
Now I'd like us to notice. In 1 Samuel chapter 17. Look at the phrase. That Goliath chooses to use. He says. Choose you a man. Notice that. Choose you a man. And you'll agree with me. That no man volunteered. For 40 days. No man volunteered. And Goliath bellows out. Choose you a man.
- 8:09
Now this is going to open up. A wonderful theme in Bible prophecy. We're going to call it. The no man prophecies. Because throughout the Old Testament. Throughout the Hebrew scriptures. There is a search. A search. A search for the one man. And when the one man is needed. No man was present. For example.
- 8:34
In Ezekiel chapter 22. In verse 30. Ezekiel says. I sought for a man. But I found no man. In Job chapter 9. In verse 32. There is no man as a mediator. In Isaiah 50 verse 2. No man to save. In Isaiah 59 verse 16. No man could intercede. In Psalm 49 verse 7.
- 8:56
No man can redeem another. In Isaiah 41 verse 28. No man could answer. And in 1 Samuel chapter 17. Choose you a man. No man. And no man. Volunteered. The Bible. The whole Hebrew scriptures. Is searching out for that one man. That one man. Who is going to be unleashed. To carry out the purpose of God.
- 9:21
And we don't find out. The end of the no man prophecies. Until right at the end of the story of the scriptures. In Revelation chapter 5. And you know the Revelation chapter 5. We've got John. Exiled on the Isle of Patmos. And he sees a book. A seven sealed book. And John is weeping.
- 9:36
As he sees the book. And he weeps. And he says. There is no man worthy. He says. To open the book. To open the seven sealed scroll. And the angel turns to John. And he says. John. There is a man. And there has been a man. Worthy to open the book of the scroll.
- 9:55
A man who came. To accomplish what no man could. And the angel gives the identity. Of the man. Of the no man prophecies. He gives him the title. And we know what the title is. Because it's on the screen. It's actually highlighted in green for us. The angel says. That the man. Was the lion.
- 10:21
Of the tribe of Judah. The root. Of David. And so the answer to the no man prophecies. Is going to be the son of David. And right at the beginning. In 1 Samuel 17. No man volunteered. And who's going to volunteer. David himself. The Messiah. After all. It makes sense doesn't it. That David typifies.
- 10:53
What Christ would become. Because believe it or not. Brothers and sisters. In the times of Saul. There was once a baby. Born in Bethlehem. Wasn't there. In the times of Saul. A baby was born in Bethlehem. And if we go to 1 Samuel chapter 16. And we look at verse 1.
- 11:17
Saul is rejected now. Samuel. And Samuel the prophet. Is told to anoint. One of the sons of Jesse. The Bethlehemite. Now there's one important principle. I'd like to bring out here. We will know now. That David is going to be anointed. Before he reigns as king. Before the fleshly kingdom of Israel. Is swept away.
- 11:43
David. Is going to be anointed. For him to then become king. King. So we have two kingdoms. Right? Two kingdoms. We have the kingdom of the flesh. Which is the first kingdom. The kingdom of Saul. And we're going to have then. The kingdom that's going to be born. After the spirit. Which is going to be the kingdom of David.
- 12:05
And you'll agree. There is a long period of waiting. Before the Messiah. Becomes the king. Because in the immediate. We have a fleshly Israel. Oppressive rulership. Occupying the nation of Israel. Under the reigns of king Saul. And they are physically suppressed. By the Gentiles. This is pointing to Jesus Christ. We have Israel after the flesh.
- 12:34
And in the lens of Bible prophecy. We will then have the second kingdom. Born after the spirit. Which is going to be ruled by the Messiah. Known as Jesus Christ. What we're seeing in 1 Samuel 16. Young people, friends, brothers and sisters. Is a prophecy. About Bible prophecy. It's a prophetic story. About a prophetic outcome.
- 12:56
In 1 Samuel 16. Because we're drawn. Right to the birthplace. Of Jesus Christ. Right in 1 Samuel chapter 16. And verse 1. We know that to be the house of bread. Known as Bethlehem. And in Bethlehem. Micah chapter 5. Verse 1 to 2. Tells us that a savior. Would arrive. In Bethlehem. During the times of spiritual frailty.
- 13:25
And foreign Gentile oppression. And that's exactly what's happening here. A Messiah is going to be announced. In Bethlehem. During a time of spiritual fragility. And Gentile oppression. And right here. In verse 1 of 1 Samuel 16. Yahweh says to the prophet. This is where I choose my king. It is here. Samuel. Bethlehem.
- 13:46
Is where I will provide my king. Now. Who is the father of David? What's his name? Jesse. Is the father of David. Now. If we were to look at 1 Samuel chapter 17. And verse 12. Jesse. Jesse. The father of David. Is literally described. As being an ancient man. So the father of David.
- 14:12
The Messiah. Called the beloved. Has been described for us. As a man. In the ancient of his days. And the name Jesse. In the Hebrew. Literally means. To exist. So if David. Symbolically represents. Jesus Christ. Whom might his father speak of. An ancient man. In the days of the rulership. Of the kingdom of Israel.
- 14:49
Whose name means. To exist. He's going to typify whom. What do you think? It's God. David. Is Christ Jesus. And the father is. Well God. Yahweh. Is going to fashion. One distinct son. To rule. And the distinct son. Is going to be called the beloved. The son of a man. Whose name means to exist.
- 15:17
Who's an ancient father in Israel. Who's a man. After God's own heart. This is the story. Of Bible prophecy. In the events. Of King David. And you'll notice. In verse 2. Samuel the prophet. Comes. With a heifer. To sacrifice. Now the heifer offering. If we were to look at. Numbers chapter 19. This particular sacrifice.
- 15:38
Was a sacrifice. So specific. It would cleanse one. From death. So. The basis. Of the anointing. Of Messiah. Is predicated. Upon an offering. To cleanse. From. Death. And we know. From Acts chapter 10. That the baptism. Of the Lord Jesus Christ. Was in fact. His anointing. And that baptism. Was symbolic. Of what?
- 16:04
To cleanse. From sin. And death. So it makes sense. Doesn't it? In Numbers chapter 19. That the heifer offering. Was the bridge. Of the Messiah. And redemption. To mark the sacrifice. Of Christ's death. And then in verse 6 to 7. Jesse's sons. Come to the prophet. And the first man. The first son.
- 16:34
Is a liad. Now from the text. We can probably envisage. What a liad looked like. Strong. Tall. Strapping. Jewish man. Gorgeous. Flowing hair. And Samuel knew it. We know Samuel knew it. Because he looked at this man. And he says. Oh.
- 16:54
Surely. This is Yahweh's anointed. And God interrupts. And he talks to Samuel. And he says. No Samuel. Look not. Upon the outward countenance. I have refused this. Don't look at the height. Of the stature. For now. Says God. I. See. The inward. Heart. Would you agree with me. That Samuel was the wisest man.
- 17:21
In Israel at that time. I would actually say. He's the wisest man in the world. Wouldn't he? No one was wiser than Samuel. He was a fire blazer. Was Samuel. And yet. Samuel the prophet. Knew not. Who the Messiah would be. He didn't know. And in fact. What we're seeing here. In verse 6 to 7.
- 17:43
Is a prophetic. Snapshot. Of the entire. History of Israel. Because we're told. In 1 Peter chapter 1. And verse 10 to 12. Not one. Single. Prophet. In the Old Testament. Scriptures. Knew. Who the true Messiah would be. 1 Peter 1. Says. That the prophets inquired. And they searched diligently. Looking for the grace to come.
- 18:10
No prophet. Not Isaiah. Not Elijah. Not Daniel. Not Jeremiah. Not Ezekiel. Not one prophet. Says Peter. Knew. Who it would be. They anticipated his arrival. But they inquired. To look into the grace to come. Because the choice. Brothers and sisters. And friends. The choice. Of the true Messiah. Whom we know to be.
- 18:30
Jesus Christ. Was not a choice. Upon flesh. Was it? It was going to be. Inward grace. And the wonder of the gospel. Is that God would raise up. That one man. In whom the whole world ignored.
- 18:47
Isaiah 53 describes this one man. As nothing outward. That would be desired. That God sought finally. On the basis of character. So we're seeing in 1 Samuel 16. A typological prophetic parable. Now you say that quickly. I practiced it. A typological prophetic parable. That's what we're seeing. In 1 Samuel chapter 16. Samuel.
- 19:10
Anyone know. What Samuel's name means? Anyone? Anyone? Well his name means. Heard of God. Heard of God. Now if you were to look. At Acts chapter 3. In verse 24. The apostle. Marks Samuel. As beginning the prophetic era. In other words. Samuel. When he was unleashed. Upon the lands of Israel. He started the period of time.
- 19:44
That we know to be the time. Of the prophets. In other words. Samuel says the apostle. Is the symbol. Of the prophets. He represents. The prophets. And we know this. Because the typological prophetic pattern. Is telling us. Because if you look at verse 1. As Samuel mourned. King Saul. Would you agree. That all the prophets.
- 20:10
Throughout history. Lamented over the Israel rulership. Would you say Jeremiah. Lamented. Over Israel. Would you say Ezekiel. Lamented. Isaiah lamented. Would you say Elijah. I can't think of one prophet. In the Old Testament scriptures. Who never mourned. Over the rulership of Israel. Because Samuel. Is the symbol. Of the prophets. And this is.
- 20:31
Giving us a prophetic outcome. Of what's going to happen. In the future of Israel. He's mourning. The leadership. Of Israel. And would you agree with me. That Samuel died. Before he saw. David King. Would you agree with me on that one. Would you agree also. That Acts chapter 3. In verse 22 to 26.
- 20:49
Tells us that. From Samuel. It says. No. Prophet. Saw. Their. Words. Fulfilled. This is. The destiny of Israel. Described to us. In the story of King David. It's setting the tone. Of what's to come. The words of the prophets. Weren't fulfilled. And well. The prophet. The symbol of the prophets. Known as heard of God.
- 21:17
Samuel. In verse 10 to 11. He goes through. All of the sons. Of Jesse. And how many sons did he have? Minus one. He had eight sons. Minus one is. We're good at maths. In Canada. Seven sons. Seven sons. Transpire through the prophets. Seven. It's interesting isn't it. Because if we were to look at Genesis 12.
- 21:40
Genesis 26. And Genesis 28. There is a seven fold blessing. Given to the patriarchs. Seven friends. We would say the number seven is the number of. Peace. Or the number of rest. No no no. The number seven. Is. And always will be. The number of the covenant. It's the number of the covenant.
- 22:03
And symbolically here. The sons of the covenant. Come to the period of the prophets. And many of those sons. Passed through the prophetic era. We can name many great men. Who passed through the prophetic era. Many. Many of them. In the Old Testament covenant history. But no one was chosen. Would you agree with them that one?
- 22:25
None were chosen. The prophets saw them all. And God said. No no no. I do not choose upon flesh. But inward grace. Hebrews chapter 2. Verse 10 to 12. Says that the father had many sons. Many sons under the covenant. But only one unique son. And I find it remarkable. That when Samuel comes to the seventh.
- 22:48
At the end of the prophetic covenant. At the end of the history of Israel. Samuel comes to the final son. And he says. To the old man. The ancient in his days. The man whose name means to exist. And he cries out to the father. Is this all you've got? Is this it?
- 23:06
And the ancient father. Whose name means to exist. Looks at the prophet. The symbol of the prophets. And says. I have another. There's one.
- 23:20
And he's keeping the sheep. And already now. We're introduced to John chapter 10. The good shepherd. The good shepherd. Is the Messiah of Israel. Notice. David. The beloved. Has been separated from his brethren. Would you agree with me on that one? He's been separated from a brethren. What does it say of Jesus Christ?
- 23:45
In Hebrews 7 verse 26. Jesus it says. He was set apart from his brethren. This is the same man we're told in Isaiah 53 verse 3. Jesus Christ. Whom was held in low esteem. By his brethren. David. The beloved. The Messiah of Israel. Was the eighth. Son. Of Jesse. And as we've already discussed.
- 24:07
The number eight. Is the number of circumcision. This is the man who's going to circumcise flesh. And he did with Goliath. Didn't he? And notice. He's the youngest. The youngest of the flock. He's the youngest. Of the sons of the covenant. 1 Corinthians 15 verse 45. Would tell us. He was the last.
- 24:26
Adam. He's not the natural firstborn. Is he? Because Colossians 1 verse 15 to 18. Would say that this man. The Messiah. Is the firstborn. After the spirit. For the man's name. Was the beloved son. David. And when David arrived. On that fateful afternoon. I presume it was an afternoon. My imagination just. Gets carried away.
- 24:58
When he came. What did the prophet see? He saw a man in verse 12. Adamic. For the word ruddy. You see there in verse 12. Is the word. Adam. In the Hebrew. The Messiah. The chosen of the one. Of the prophets. Was going to be. A man. Like Adam. Sharing the Adamic nature.
- 25:35
That we all inherit. This man. Was just like him. But there was something different. About this boy. There was something. Slightly peculiar. About the ruddy man. Called David. The Adamic man. Called David. Because you'll notice. It says that he was. Of beautiful countenance. And goodly to look upon. This Messiah. Was going to share.
- 25:55
Our nature. But there was going to be. Something winsome. Something beautiful. Of his spirit. And his demeanor. And God says. To the prophet. That's.
- 26:06
My boy. That's him. A man. Adamic. And beautiful. In spirit. He's the chosen Messiah. And the prophets. Inquired. Of this. And then. In verse 13. Samuel. Took the horn. Of oil. And. Mashiach. Him. The word. Anointed. There is the word. Messiah. Mashiach. Samuel. Anointed. The Messiah. And where did he anoint him? In the midst.
- 26:42
Of his brethren. The Messiah. Was going to be. And always would be. Anointed. In obscurity. Before he was. Seen by Israel. Before he was ever seen. By Israel. And in verse 13. The spirit then. The Holy Spirit. Came down. And rushed. Rushed upon him. From that day forward. You know. In verse 11.
- 27:04
They would have obviously. Sat down for a meal. That day. The little family. And those brethren. We know that. Because a sacrifice. Was offered. And there would have been. A meal of fellowship. Now what. One Samuel. Doesn't tell us. The Psalms of David is. What might you think. Was the atmosphere. On that fateful day.
- 27:26
When they all sat down. Looking at their new Messiah. What do you think. What do you think. The brethren thought of him. Because Psalm 23. Is actually going to describe. For us. What happened. Let's have a look. At Psalm 23.
- 27:40
We can identify. This Psalm. As being. The early times. Of King David. And in verse 5. It says there. Thou preparest. A table. Before me. In the presence. Of mine.
- 28:01
Enemies. Thou anointest. My head with oil. What's quite astounding. Is that when they sat down. And they looked at David. David was anointed. In the face of scorn. His brethren. Did not. Like. Their. Brother. And we know this. Because in 1 Samuel chapter 17. Remember when David. Goes into the heat of battle.
- 28:29
Against Goliath. He meets the older. Strapping handsome. Jewish man. Called Eliab. You know. Remember the one. With glowing. You know. Flowing brown hair. That one. And Eliab. In 1 Samuel chapter 17. Treated his younger brother. David. With nothing but. Scorn. And contempt. He treats him. And ridicules him. With derision. In 1 Samuel 17.
- 28:50
Verse 28. In fact. We know this Psalm. David was to later lament. In Psalm 69. Verse 8. I am a stranger. Unto my brethren. And I am an alien. Unto my mother's children. You see. What we're going to realize. As we go through. These studies together. Is that David. Embodied. The prophetic language.
- 29:11
Of the Psalms. That were going to turn up. In the life of Jesus Christ. These were all. Prophetic. Of the one to come. How do we know that? Because might we know. That that little home. In Nazareth. Just on. The shores of Galilee. That house. And that home. Was a divided home.
- 29:39
The prophetic language. Of Psalm 23. Is going to turn up. In Jesus Christ. When he. Grew up in that little home. Of Mary. His brethren. His own. Flesh and blood.
- 29:53
Despised. Their Messiah. They despised him. Jesus tells us this. It's not me telling you. It's Jesus Christ. He tells us in Mark chapter 6. And verse 4. He says. A prophet. A prophet. And David was a prophet. A prophet is not dishonored. Except in his hometown. And among his own relatives. And in his own house.
- 30:20
And he's talking about. His house in Nazareth. In John chapter 7. And verse 5. He says. There that Jesus. His own flesh and blood. His own brethren. Wanted him out the house. Do you know why they wanted him out the house? Do you know why? Because John 7 says. That his brethren. Didn't.
- 30:40
Believe him. And knowing this. It says in John chapter 7. And knowing the Jews. Wanted to kill him. His own brethren. Said to him. Go to Judea. Knowing full well. That the Jews. Wanted to kill him. They tell Jesus. To go to Judea. Those brethren. Were hostile. Towards the Messiah. Known as Jesus Christ.
- 31:02
Of Nazareth. The son of David. The son of God. They despised him. And what's wonderful. About the Lord Jesus Christ. He was 20 steps. 50 steps. 100 steps ahead of them. He knew the outcome of those brethren. Before they even knew it. He knew the destiny. Of his own flesh and blood. Because he knew the story of his forefather.
- 31:20
What happened to David. You see. Was going to happen to Jesus Christ. Because we're dealing with prophetic typology. How do we know that? Let's have a look at 1 Samuel chapter 22. 1 Samuel chapter 22 please. You'll be familiar with this incident. This is the moment where Saul. Pursues David. And in verse 1.
- 31:44
David is departing. And notice he goes into the cave of Agdullam. Now. We haven't got time to look at this. But just trust me on it. Right. Please believe me. When we look at the word cave. Caves are always associated with death. You follow the life of Abraham. And you look at the cave of Machpelah.
- 32:07
Everyone in the Abrahamic covenant. Is buried in a cave. Caves. Like Lazarus found. When he rose out of that cave. Is symbolic. Of Abrahamic death. So David is in flight now. Away from Saul. And he goes. Into a symbolic tomb. And who's going to identify with David's death. Who's going to follow him in there.
- 32:35
If you look at verse 1. His brethren. They went down with him. I mean these are the same brethren who outcast him. These are the same brethren. That David describes in Psalm 23. As being his enemies. These are the same brethren. Who treated him with scorn. Contempt. And hatred. And yet now. They're following their king.
- 32:56
Symbolically into his death. Now why might you think. Those brethren. Followed David into that tomb. Why would they do that? Why would they do that? Because they believed. He would triumph. As king. And they enter into his death. And identify themselves now with him. They did. You know. Do you know what happened to the brethren of Jesus?
- 33:31
His half brothers. Do you know what became of them? We're only given a couple of verses. We next find them in Acts chapter 1. And in verse 14. Do you know where they are?
- 33:46
They're in the upper room with his disciples. And if they're in the upper room. With his disciples. That means we're. Thinking about bread and wine. And if we're thinking about bread and wine. Then we're thinking about fellowship. And if we're thinking about fellowship. Then that tells me. And that tells you. And that tells the Lord Jesus Christ.
- 34:09
That his brethren. Identified with his death. And his resurrection. Because what became of the brothers of David. Would also become. The destiny of the brothers of Jesus. Jesus knew the outcome before. Well before the scriptures were even revealed for him. Because of the story of David. And now in chapter 22 in verse 1.
- 34:30
All the father's house descend down as well. That's you and I. Note in verse 2. All those burdened by the curse of their sufferings. All unite and gather to one man. Who's going to be called their captain. David the captain. And as Hebrews chapter 2 verse 10. Tells us of Jesus Christ. It was Jesus who brings many sons to glory.
- 34:52
To make the captain of their salvation. Perfect through sufferings. So let's go to 1 Samuel chapter 17. Saul now. As we revisit the events of Goliath. Saul is going to witness David. Take the sword of Goliath. And decapitate the giant of sin. He's going to take Goliath's sword. Now you tell me. What does the sword represent scripturally?
- 35:25
It's a symbol of the sword. The word of God. That's what the sword represents. The word of God. In other words. What's being played out here. When David took the sword of Goliath. Goliath representing flesh. And the sword representing the word of God. Typified in David. In that moment. The word became flesh.
- 35:47
The word became flesh. And Saul. Watched the whole thing transpire. And he's gawping. Can't believe it. He's the giant of Israel. And in verse 57 to 58. You like that picture don't you? By the way. I was deliberating whether or not to have it. But I thought yeah we'll have it. David. David in verse 57 to verse 58.
- 36:11
Is grasping. The giant's head. As a trophy. He's got the head of sin. In his hand in verse 57 to verse 58. And you know. You imagine you're Saul. What is the first thing you're going to say. If you're the king of Israel. What's Saul's going to tell us. The first thing he says.
- 36:36
Whose son are you? It's the first thing he says. And it seems to me. That Saul is obsessing. About whose father was David. Whose son are you? He says. He even asks Abner in verse 55. The captain of his army. He says go and inquire. Whose son this stripling was. Whose son are you?
- 36:58
Now this is right. This is dripping with irony you know. Dripping with it. Because Saul already knew. Who his father was. I mean he'd sent out his messengers. There was an entire report. Given on David. The search and the inquiry. Of the young son of Bethlehem. And the gifts. And the talents of David.
- 37:20
Were well known in the courts of Saul. We might remind ourselves of them. In 1 Samuel chapter 16 and verse 18. In verse 18. You'll notice when Saul said. Who's this young man? The inquiry came through. Well in verse 18. They say that he's knowledgeable in the harp. In the harp. It's really specific.
- 37:40
That that particular instrument is used. The harp. Because if you were to look at Psalm 49. In verse 4. The harp. The harp. Is a symbol. Of parabolic teaching. The harp. Is the instrument. That was used. To teach in parables. Says Psalm 49. And verse 4. So when the inquiry came through. Saul heard there was a young man.
- 38:11
Who was exquisitely beautiful. In teaching parables. He does so by the harp. And they also found out. That the spirit of God. Was upon him. And they knew also. That this young man. Called David the beloved. The shepherd of Israel. The lion of Judah. Was also a mighty man of valor. And he proved that.
- 38:28
In the feat against Goliath. The man of sin. Was decimated. We also know about David. That he was prudent in matters. Says the King James Version. But quite literally. That phrase means. That he was a discerner of the word. How beautiful is that? David the Messiah. Was a discerner of the word. And we also know.
- 38:47
Says Saul. That David was comely. He was goodly. He was of great form. And no reproach. And that Yahweh was with him. So who's this really talking about? Is this talking about David? Well yes it is. But who is it prophetically talking about? Who else? Brothers and sisters. Young friends in the Bible.
- 39:09
Happen to be the son of a man. Called he who exists. The son of a father. In his ancient of days. Was a great parable teacher. Was a mighty man. Who would defeat the giant of sin. Was a discerner of the word. Of comely. And no reproach. And Yahweh was with him. Who's this really talking about?
- 39:28
When we're thinking about David. This is talking about. Well one who would be. The Lord Jesus Christ. The son of the ancient of days. Who exists. So when Saul asked the question to David. Whose son are you? Do you think he was inquiring about his family tree? This wasn't a question about genealogy.
- 39:53
This wasn't a question about ancestry. This friends. Was a question about ability. And mastery. Whose son. Are you? And you know what? When the true Messiah of Israel arrived. Known as Jesus Christ. What was the question? The Jews asked. Time and time. Again. It was the Jews. Who marveled at Jesus. Who were astonished at his ability.
- 40:35
At his doctrine. That just profoundly poured out of his mouth. Look at the questions. Isn't this the son of Joseph? The carpenter's son? Is not this the son of Mary? You know. If we were to look at the whole gospel of John. And we boiled it down to one question. John's gospel is all about.
- 40:57
Whose father was Jesus? Whose son is he? Is the question of the gospel of John. Such astonishing ability of Christ. Forced that very question. I mean even the centurion. In Mark chapter 15 and verse 39. What did the centurion say? As he looked at the crucified Christ. Surely. This. Is. The. Son. Of.
- 41:23
God. The ancient of days. The one who exists. The Messiah. The son of David. And after the flesh. That was the question. That they proposed to Christ. And you know what's fascinating. There was one. One who stood witness. To the appearing of Christ. And never once. Doubted his origins. One man. Who never once.
- 41:50
Doubted. The origins of the Lord Jesus Christ. He's going to tell us. In John chapter 1 and verse 30. He says. After me. Cometh a man. Which is preferred before me. The same man was going to say. That I knew him not. But he was made manifest. Before Israel. The same man. Declared that he saw.
- 42:18
The spirit descending. And it abode upon the Messiah. This same man. Proclaimed that he heard. A voice declare from heaven. This. Is. My. David. This is my beloved. Son. In whom I'm well pleased. And this particular man. Was to say. I bear record. That this. Is. The. Son. Of. God. And his name.
- 42:46
Was. The Baptist. A man called. John. And how majestic. One thousand years earlier. The spirit of Yahweh. Was to descend upon a man. Called the beloved. And when David finished. Speaking that he was the son of the father. There was one. Man. Who stood. Witnessing. The appearing of the Messiah. And he too.
- 43:11
Never doubted. And believed. That the beloved. Was the son of his father. And ironically. His name wasn't John. His name was. John. A thin.
- 43:32
Jonathan. Shared the same spirit. As the very one. Who would become the Baptist. Let's have a look. A look. At one. Samuel. Chapter 18. In verse one.
- 43:52
It tells us there. That when David. Had made an end of speaking. Unto Saul. That the soul. Of Jonathan. Was knit. With the soul. Of David. And Jonathan. Loved him. As his own soul. You'll notice. In verse three. That Jonathan. Created the genesis. Of what would become. Their covenantal relationship. Their covenantal friendship.
- 44:16
We've got a friendship here. In one Samuel 16. Sorry. In one Samuel 18. That's based upon. A covenant. A covenant. What might you think. This is foreshadowing. Where else. In the Bible. Do we find a friendship. Of a witness. Based upon. A covenant. Which happens to be. A new covenant. Is it not.
- 44:39
The Baptist. And his friend. The Messiah. John. And a man called Jesus. Notice in verse. Six to seven. In chapter 18. The moment this happens. And David slays. Goliath. You'll notice. All the women. Of the cities. Can you see this. All the women. Of the cities. They come. Jubilant. And they embrace. Themselves.
- 45:00
To David. Who do you think. Is being teased out here. What figure. Might you think. Is being presented to us. As we see the women. Coming out their cities. I believe. And I'm sure. You'll agree with me. That we're seeing a figure. Here of the bride. The bride. Of Messiah. Now. As Jesus.
- 45:18
Bears witness. In the shadow. Of David. As he comes. A figure. Of the bride. And if Jonathan. Stands with him. Who might Jonathan. Represent here. If the bride. Comes. And embraces herself. To a Messiah. And there. Stands. Jonathan. Who might he. Speak of. He's going to be. The friend. To whom. The friend.
- 45:41
To the groom. And what was it. Of John the Baptist. In chapter 3. Of John. In verse 29. He tells us. That the friend. Of the bridegroom. Standeth. And heareth him. Rejoiced. Greatly. Because of the bridegroom's. Voice. This is my joy. Therefore. It is fulfilled. And what had Jonathan. Been hearing. A century earlier.
- 46:05
Sorry. A millennia. Earlier. What. Did Jonathan. Listen to. In which he. Embraced his soul. To his Messiah. It tells us. In chapter 18. And verse 1. After David. Finished speaking. Jonathan. Heard David's. Voice. And the Baptist. Says. I standeth. And heareth. The voice. Of him. Jonathan. Was to rejoice. Like. The Baptist. And what did he see.
- 46:35
He saw. A man. Ruddy. And of beautiful countenance. And all the women singing. What a marvelous scene that is. A man. Adamic. With a beautiful. A countenance. And the women singing. David. Hath slain. His. Ten thousands. You know. Unbeknown to Jonathan. And David. On that fateful day. That that very incident. Was going to describe.
- 46:58
The song of the bride. To Christ. Did we know that? We've heard of the book. Of song of Solomon. Haven't we? It's a whole. Hymn book. Of the song of the bride. To her husband. And you know. What the bride sings. In chapter 5. Of song. In verse 10. The bride sings. To her groom.
- 47:16
This is you and I. To the Lord Jesus Christ. She says. My David. My beloved. Who is ruddy. And glows. The chiefest. Among 10. Thousand. And here is David. Man ruddy. And beautiful countenance. And all the women coming. Singing. David has slain his 10 thousands. That was going to be. The song. Of the Messiah.
- 47:40
And it's played out here. In chapter 18. Of 1 Samuel. In the story of. A man called the beloved. Jonathan. Is the friend. Who knew the groom. His Messiah. Before the world ever did. Jonathan. Became the forerunner. Of David. No doubt about it. He heard David speak. The thoughts of his own heart.
- 48:06
And he unleashed. A kindred spirit to him. And we know that. Because in verse 4. What does he give to David? David. He gives what? Pretty much everything. Would you agree? I mean. He's got nothing left. At the end of it. He gives. Every single possession. To the young shepherd. And every item he gives.
- 48:28
Is symbolic. Of his royal office. He gives his royal office. To the young shepherd. And what was it? The Baptist would say of Christ. In John chapter 3. In verse 30. He must. Increase. But I. Must. Decrease. Would you agree for me. That Jonathan was the heir to the throne? I think you have to agree with that one.
- 49:00
He was. The heir to the throne. But he's found one better. You know. You might know this one. In Luke chapter 3. In verse 15. There were a group of Jews. Who were contemplating. Who the Messiah would be. And they mused. And they considered. Whether or not it would be the Baptist. And they go to the man called John.
- 49:27
And they look at him. And they say. Is it you? Are you the Christ? They say to him. And John the Baptist looks at those Jews. And he says. It is not me.
- 49:40
And he says to them. One mightier than I cometh. Mightier than I. You know the word mightier. That John uses in the Greek. The word mightier. Is the word in Greek. Ish cross. It basically means. A comprehensive might. It's a word. That essentially means. A heroic power. So when they say to John the Baptist.
- 50:10
Are you the Christ? John's response was. No. But a hero cometh. A hero of might. You've never seen before. Says John the Baptist. So my question is this. And it is my last question. You'll be pleased to know. Why. Didn't. Jonathan. Fight the giant of Gath.
- 50:34
Would we anticipate. Him waiting. For one. Mightier than him. As the Baptist did. A millennia later. Do you think. Jonathan was. Choosing deliberately. Not to engage conflict. Because he was waiting. For a Messiah to appear. What do you think. Should I tell you. My thoughts. You're nodding your heads. And you don't have a choice.
- 50:58
I think we're told. In 1 Samuel 15. And I wouldn't like you to turn there. Because we're only going to talk about it briefly. Do we know that Jonathan was a hero? Yeah. 1 Samuel 14. He was a master against the Philistines. Wasn't he? A hero. A war hero is Jonathan. And in the very next chapter.
- 51:21
In 1 Samuel 15. His father. Who is symbolic. Of the elite. In Israel. Failed to slay. Agag. The Amalekite. And Samuel. The old prophet. With his flowing long locks. Comes to him. In chapter 15. In verse 28. And he says to the king of Israel. He says. Yahweh. Yahweh hath rent. The kingdom of Israel.
- 51:43
From me this day. The kingdom is gone. Says Samuel. And he goes on to say. God hath given it to a. Neighbor of thine. One. That. Is. Better. Than. You. Who might you think. Was stood right next to Saul. When he heard those words. Who was a captain. In the ranks of Israel.
- 52:11
Whom was his heir. Who might have heard the words. Of Samuel. The old prophet. Cry out. The kingdom is rent from you. And I give the kingdom to one better. Well I believe it was his son. Jonathan. So when the giant came. In chapter 17. And all Israel ran. Jonathan. The son of Saul.
- 52:36
Knew. He could not. Defeat. That. Giant. So he waited. And he waited. And he waited. A bit longer. Until the hero. Promised. The neighbor. Declared. Arrived. Called. The Messiah. David. And Jonathan. Was prepared to wait. Under astonishing pressure. Would you agree with me. On that one. And when David arrived. He. Well. He didn't disappoint.
- 53:08
Did he. And would you agree with me. On that one. He slew the head. What might you think. The Bible of Jonathan. Looked like. During that time. Because he didn't have our Bibles. Did he. He only had a small portion. Of the Old Testament scriptures. At that point. So if we were. Looking at the Bible of Jonathan.
- 53:28
What. Do you think. His expectations were. Well. He would know. That from Genesis 3. Verse 15. And Genesis 17. Verse 19. That's a very special seed. A seed of Abraham. A boy child. Would crush. The head. Of the enmity. The serpent. And he would also know. Genesis 22. Verse 17. That this particular child.
- 53:54
A son of Abraham. The man. Who we know. Was to. Crush that head. Would take the gates. Of his enemies. And he was also know. Genesis 49. Verse 10. That this special son. A child of Abraham. The crusher of the head. Of the serpent. Would also hold. The scepter. From the tribe of.
- 54:13
Say it. Judah. And I find it. Rather. Coincidental. That all those features. Find their dramatic. Rehearsal. In the young. Bethlehemite. Called the beloved. What might you think. Jonathan thought. When he saw David. Holding the head of Goliath. What might you think. That he thought. That this was it. He's arrived. The Messiah. Chosen.
- 54:42
Is here. And he gives him. His possessions. And he embraces. The young shepherd. And he says. One is better. Than me. But it wasn't to be. Was it? David was. Merely. A shadow. Of one greater. A man. Who just so happens. To be. The son of Jesse.
