Is Idlewild 1982, day four and the second period which has been being given to us by our brother Purse Mansfield on the general subject before the deluge. Today’s topic is development of materialism and the descendants of Cain.
- 0:30
The great theme of our study at this point of Genesis is, of course, the elucidation of the words of the Lord Jesus Christ. As it was in the days of Noah, so shall it be at the coming of the Son of Man, and I believe that we will see that they’re developed in the days following the the rejection of claim.
- 0:52
They developed in those days a system of things upon the earth that was an exact parallel with which we are familiar today. Very interesting to see this develop in this particular part of Genesis. But what is more important and what will engage our attention tomorrow is what we should be doing in regard to it. And we will see that from the example that is set before us by where the men of old.
- 1:18
First of all, as we come to consider this particular section of the subject, we must bear in mind that the names that are given in the book of in the Bible most often have a very, very significant meaning to them. And that meaning to the names can help us to understand certain circumstances that might arise.
- 1:39
For example, we have the name Abram, which means exalted father, changed to Abraham, the father of a multitude. We have the name Jacob, which means supplanted, changed to Israel, which means a Prince with God. And all these names are more than the name of convenience, like we might use, for example, you call me Purse.
- 1:59
What’s that means? Excel? I don’t know, except it’s pretty empty. But all names today have not at that significance. But in those days they had a significance. Moses was drawn out because his name means that and so forth, right throughout the Scriptures. These names are quite important, and they have an index to either the person concerned or the circumstances in which he lived. You will find, if you follow this theme through for your own study of the Word of God, that there’s not a. Chapter of the Bible.
- 2:31
That’s not outstandingly interesting. I made that statement once when I was expounding the scriptures to friends in in in public meetings and this, these were challenged nights and they could challenge anything that was said. And I made that point and I challenged the audience. I said you show me a patched chapter of the Bible that cannot be made thrillingly interesting.
- 2:54
And the man stood up in the audience and he quoted the first of Chronicles chapter 1, but that reads Adam, Seth, Enos, Keenan, Mallele and so forth. Just a list of names, but fortunately I had given a little bit of study to that and I was able to point out that in that list of names, when you carefully look at that list of names, God is revealing a very important principle. And the principle is this, that men that appeared strong and mighty in their day and generation stated some view, whereas those that were perhaps in obscurity or in weakness, their line was continued.
- 3:33
That’s the same as Jacob. Jacob wandered down in the land of promise, and he was in trouble. His family was giving him concern. His favorite son was in Egypt, and the general state of Jacob was not one of power and might. On the other hand, contemporary with him, the Edomites had established themselves in a very, very powerful monarchy and Dukes were reigning there.
- 4:01
They faded, Jacob continues to this very day. So these names are quite interesting. What we find in the in the 4th chapter of Genesis, which is engaging our attention now we’ve come yesterday to the point of Lanex Lane, Maggie name means whose name means overthrower, whose name can signify a strong young man.
- 4:27
And we reached the stage before the flood of perilous times. We know what Paul warns us in the second of Timothy chapter 3 after know therefore, that in the last days perilous times shall come. We’ve reached those perilous times and here they are foreshadowed in the life of Lamac and his family. And these are given in greater detail the life of Lamech. And we’re going to see that his great, his great, his great contemporary is Enoch.
- 5:02
And there’s going to be a challenge between these two men of old. So Lamech stands for the overthrower. He lives in perilous times. He introduces those perilous times. And he and his family are responsible for a state of permissiveness, profit, pleasure and power to dominate the world at that time. An exact foreshadowing of the present. We pointed out yesterday that for the first time we have polygamy introduced into the things of God. A state of things that is contrary to what God had established in Eden.
- 5:39
So that Lomax, for the first time Lomax takes 2 wives. So you see, there is a moral declension at that particular time, as there is a moral declension today. And that moral declension today is challenging ecclesias, no doubt about that, in every part of the world, because the environment in which we’re living, it accepts things today that it never would have accepted 10/15/20 or more years ago. And very often environment will affect our own lives. And we must exercise care.
- 6:17
We must exercise care if we want the Kingdom of God. And it’s very important that we should do that. We can do it in our own lives, in our own example, in our own way, in within the ecclesia of God. We must maintain standards at all costs, because if we don’t, we have the parallel what happened in the days of Noah and remember that the. Lord Jesus Christ said speaking to the apostles. To his own followers.
- 6:48
As it was in the days of Noah. So shall it be at the coming of the Son of Man. And remember this, as we pointed out and tried to stress that he said nothing about the violence of the earth. He said nothing about the corruption of the earth. He spoke of ordinary things having relationship to the followers of Almighty God.
- 7:10
And in the days of Noah, eight people only were saved of all those who were categorized as sons of God, and the eight were saved. And Jesus Christ said as it was in the days of Noah. And it’s a matter of deep concern with me personally, those words, I see it as a challenge. And therefore it is, as I said, of deep concern, because if we can play any part whatever in the ecclesias of God, we must endeavour to play a part that will challenge the environment in which we’re living, whether it be in dress, whether it be in conduct, whatever it may be in doctrine. Those standards must be maintained. Otherwise we are going to find that, as it was in the days of Noah, affects us in a very adverse sense. Now here we have it.
- 8:08
In the days of Lamac he took two wives. The name of 1 was Ada, and the name of the other was Zilla. And I think I pointed out yesterday that the name Ada means adorn and zilla means shade. It comes from a root, Hebrew root, that means to hover over 1 to protect. So that here is Lamac having the best of both worlds. He’s got beauty and he’s got care, and his two wives are attending to him in every way that he desires. That was the state of Lamac.
- 8:38
Now we read in that same context that as far as Ada was concerned, she bear Jabel. Jabel, that word signifies to produce like a manufacturer. He was the great producer, the great manufacturer, the economic genius of the family, the commercial man. He stood for profit, not PROPHEP, but PROFIT. He stood for profit.
- 9:08
Did this man, because you notice that as far as he was concerned he was the father of them that dwell in tents and of such as have cattle, he was the father of them. He didn’t dwell on the tent himself. He didn’t look after the sheep and the cattle. He was no shepherd. He was the father of them that did that. He employed them.
- 9:28
So he had his business interest in all parts of the earth at that particular time. He was a commercial genius of the family and he developed the material resources of that family. Whilst Lanek stood for permissiveness, he stood for profit. And that’s a feature of life today, isn’t it? The development of profits among these great combines that we see developing on every hand. And men are being brought into a state of slavery under the control of these great combines today, no doubt about that. So that some of these big businesses demand you give them your body and soul as you engage in their service. Some of them even demand that you find your social activities in the social organisations that they will establish. Some of them in Australia, they have their own sports organization and you are expected to be in that that organization as well.
- 10:20
And they treat you as pharaoh treated the slaves in Egypt. They had plenty of Egypt when they were slaves. They remembered that back in the wilderness. They remembered how they ate in in the in in Egypt and how much preferable it was to the arid wandering in the desert. And so it is as far as business is concerned today.
- 10:39
We must be on our guard and we must be prepared to to stand up against the pressures that are being brought upon us and by determination of faith, do what we believe is right on the side of God. We’ll be alright. You know, the Lord Jesus Christ himself in the 6th chapter of Matthew, he speaks about this and he tells us that we need to exercise extreme care in that direction and that we need in in that way to see before us one thing only.
- 11:10
And that is a position in the Kingdom of God, because he says there in the 6th chapter of Matthew, take no thought, no anxious thought. What shall we eat or what shall we? Drink or wherewithal shall we be clothed? For after all these things do the Gentiles seek, and your heavenly Father knoweth that he need these things. But seek ye first the Kingdom of God and His righteousness, and these things will be added unto you. Now, that doesn’t mean that we can flout everything and merely say, well, I’m not going to worry even at work today. And some people say in Australia, it doesn’t mean that you act like that in all that you do. Do it with all your mind, including business. But.
- 12:05
Don’t allow that to obscure your vision of the first essentials, the first priority. Think ye first, the Kingdom of God and his righteousness. And that should be the main objective of our life, and that should be the the basis upon which we found our own families, so that when we’ve got young children of an evening, that prime is ours, not the world’s outside. And that home is an Oasis for the truth. So we gather the children around us and we do the readings. And even when those kitties are young and they can hardly read, they stutter out words like, you know, you get onto on the 14th of Matthew Genesis.
- 12:47
And the little child tried to spell out Kedila Lama and finds it very, very difficult. But it’s a very good exercise, a very good exercise indeed. And it’s teaching that child something that 1,000,000 words will never teach it. And that is its parents have got a reverence for this word of God, a reverence for that word of God, the same as when we give first priority to our attendance at the meetings, not even the memorial meetings, the study classes.
- 13:17
And it’s an object lesson to our own families at that meeting is first priority. God is first in our lives. Now this was not the case in the family of Lamech. And as far and as far as Gabel was concerned, his first concern was of course, to build up the family resources and material things and he become the father of them, that women Kents and of such as have cattle. So he employed people in this way and he extended his influence and his possessions on all sides. And the family of Lamechs growing up, very well, thank you.
- 13:55
Now they have another son. His brother’s son, we read in verse 21, was called Jubal, and he was the father of all such as Handel, the harp and organ. From this word Jubal, you get the word jubilee, and it comes from a Hebrew root meaning joyous music. So the second son is going to look after the pleasure of life. He’s going to be the great entertainer. Not that he is himself necessarily is engaging in this. They doubtless he plays very pleasantly, but he’s the father of them, has handled the Harvard organ. He organises the pop groups around the world of that promise.
- 14:40
He’s got pleasure, so that pleasure becomes big business. He’s the entertainer of the family of Lamech and on all sides you hear the songs of humor and he is applauded on all sides and he is governing the world at that particular time from an entertainment point of view. So that whilst the first son has engaged in profits and in his commercial extension, the second son has given over the pleasure and entertainment. Not that he particularly has engaged in pleasure, but he’s making a business out of it and that business is dominating the world from that angle at that particular time. See how there is a paraphrase, A foreshadowing rather of what is taking place today.
- 15:28
Look at the decline in music in the last 30 odd years. Look what passes torrents of music today and, and, and the, and the mass production of these things and the influence that it plays that it, the influence that it exercises over young people. You know, they say The Beatles play and they all faint. Well, I feel the same way, very faint when they play. But just the, the, the, the point is that here is something that is engaging the intention, the attention of people all over the world at that particular time. And that music drives out of the mind the things of God. It drives it out of the mind.
- 16:08
You know, it matters not what we might do in life. We might be interested in literature. We may be interested in music. As a matter of fact, I’m very fond of music. I think that Beethoven music is, cannot be excelled. I like handle and I like a few of the other composers as well. I find that my mind when I play Beethoven, it’s very harmonious to me.
- 16:34
I, I, I enjoy it so much. But but whatever we do, whether we’re interested in music, whether we’re interested in literature, in reading, the best thing is to try to elevate our minds in that way. And we can do that even outside the influence of the Bible. You can read good books or you can listen to good music. You can educate yourself in these good things and it raises the mind.
- 17:01
It’s a very, very good exercise from that standpoint. The trouble is today we have so much rubbish that’s published. Or performed. That it degrades the mind. I am told that every day 18,000,000 trees are cut down. In the world, 18,000,000 trees are cut down, and most of those trees are cut down to provide pulp for paper.
- 17:37
And on that paper there are printed things that poison men’s minds. So 18,000,000 trees, God’s living trees, are cut down to be pulped into paper and printed on their deadly things that are going to destroy your mind. And that’s fed into your mind. You know, the tree is designed to purify the air. But we are told by ecologists that we’re reaching a stage in human history where there are simply not enough trees to purify the air for humanity.
- 18:10
We’re reaching the stage that the atom bomb or the nuclear weapon is not going to be the thing that’s going to challenge us by, but ecology, ecology, ecological principles, including these trees that they are at present time cutting down so readily and cannot be replaced. Mostly they will replace a tree with a pine tree, which does not help you as far as the purification of the air is concerned.
- 18:39
Australia, for example, is not enough trees. Not enough trees. And what’s the same result? People to get irritable. And you know how damn irritable Australians can get? Blame it onto the trees. But you see, this is a situation that men cut down that which God is designed to purify the air, and they use it to poison men’s minds. Now this is the state in which we’re finding ourselves with these sons of Lamech.
- 19:05
So there we have a Jubal noted for the heart of the organ and giving himself over to entertainment and pleasure. Now in verse 32 we find that Zilla has a son, and she called him Tubal Cain. And Tubal Cain means the flowing 4th of Cain. It’s an extension of Cain. Now we know what Cain did and killed his brother.
- 19:30
Now in the son of Zillah there is one that’s going to extend that. He’s going to extend that Kane conducted or Kane was the first murderer. But this descendant of Cain, this flowing 4th of Cain is going to perpetuate and extend the spirit of Cain and he’s going to be noted for that. He’s going to rejoice in power.
- 20:01
So whilst in Lamac we have permittiveness and in the Jabil we have Prophet and in Jubal we have pleasure, in Tubal Cain we have power. And he becomes the instructor of every artificer in brass and iron, or as the Hebrew habit, the wetter, the sharpener of it. He is manufacturing the munitions of that day. He is perfecting them and sharpening them so that he’s going to be noted for munitions in that pine. He’s going to stand for power, and now re/max surveys his empire, and what more does he want? He is himself pleasing himself.
- 20:43
What he’s going to do as fast as morals are concerned. What I want? I’m going to have Where is his son, the first son. He is the commercial genius of the age, bringing in the world into the family. His. Second son looking after the pleasure, giving the world a form of escapism. So they don’t. Think too much about God.
- 21:03
The third one, noted for power is the weapons of war. He’s the munition. Maker of the Age. And that is being extended at that particular time under the influence of this third son, Jubal Kane, much the same as you have it today, an exact parallel of what we see about us today. Do you know how? Many people are employed in munition works throughout the world or related industries. 80 million people. 80. Million people are employed in munition works or related things around the world.
- 21:35
You imagine the sum of money that’s played out merely to employ them. Imagine the collapse of the economy in many parts of the earth if it was stopped. But the manufacture of munitions of, of war to die is a major industry throughout the world, and 80 million or less than 80 million people are employed in that.
- 21:57
And here we have a foreshadowing of it in the work of of what’s his name in the work of Jubal Kane, who was the wetter of every artificer in brass and iron. So now you see we have this development in the family of Lamic. And then surprisingly, his daughter’s name is given. Now this is most unusual, mainly of course, because the men, that’s all friends will realize, are the Lords of creation and really women are secondary consideration. But better as it may, here we have the daughter of Limac mention.
- 22:49
Now that’s a very surprising thing in Scripture, a very surprising thing, and it’s only done under exceptional circumstances. So there’s some some exceptional circumstance that that requires the mentioning of the sister of Tubal Kinas Naima. Naima’s name means pleasantness. She is a pleasant personality. And the mention of women and the genealogies of the Bible, as I said before, and I should have said it more seriously, is most unusual and always there are some reason in it. So there’s some reason for the for Naima’s name being mentioned here.
- 23:30
And I believe myself that she has a plan to play when you come to the 6th chapter of Genesis and you have the sons of God saw the daughters of men, that they were fair. Now here then is Naima, whose name means mentioning, whose name means pleasantness, and she is beginning to assert herself in contradiction to what we read in the 3rd chapter of Genesis and verse 16. Nothing much is said concerning her, merely that her name is mentioned there.
- 24:07
Perhaps she was flaunting her feminine beauty in some way. Perhaps her very attitude was leading to that state of things that we see in Genesis chapter 6 verses one and two, but most likely it was in some form of women’s liberation. So you see as far as Naima was concerned, this pleasant daughter of Lamech, Lamech would encourage her in the attitude that she adopted. So that now we have in addition to the three sons of the of the Lamech, we have her daughter, his daughter Naima. That stands for permissiveness.
- 24:48
So now we have the whole family, the polygamy with which is associated Lamech, prophet with which is associated Jabil, pleasure with which is associated Jabil power, cubilkane and permissiveness Naima. And there we have the. Life of this man who is a. Leading light among the sons of Cain in the in the development of the purpose of God at that particular time.
- 25:17
Now with that, we’d look at his contemporary. We’re only going to look at his contemporary for one moment. We’ll go back to that later on. But the contemporary of of Lamac was Enoch, the Enoch that was translated, the Enoch that’s mentioned in the next chapter. And as far as that is concerned, he challenged Lamac, he challenged Lamac.
- 25:44
And we’ve got the words of both their challenges here to consider. First of all, we’ll look at that of Lamech, and then we’ll look at that of Enoch. Here we have it in the in the 23rd verse of that 4th chapter of Genesis. And there we have the national anthem of Naimac. And Lamech says, Hear my voice, hear my voice, ye wives of Lamech, hug it unto my speech.
- 26:14
But I have slain a man to my wounding, and a young man to my hurt, if trained, shall be Avenged Sevenfold. Truly Lamech 70 * 7. Truly Lamech 70 * 7. That is the boast of this man Lamech. That is what he is claiming. And that’s a song, because in the Hebrew it’s in poetic meter. So you see, here we have the song of Lamech, and we can imagine that song being put to music by his son, and that song resounding throughout the world.
- 26:49
It’s a warning. Now those words can be rendered a little differently. Hear my voice, ye wives of Lamech, hugging unto my speech. For I would. Slay a man if he worded me and that stands in my way to my hurt, let. Anyone stand in my way and I’ll cute. Did anyone try to stop me?
- 27:13
And I murder him. And I don’t care who it is, I, Lamex, have spoken. I have the power, the resources, no one will stop me. And it’s the attitude that is reflected in the world today in this song of Lamex at that particular time. Moreover, if Train is going to be Avenged Sevenfold, my lame act will avenge myself 70 * 7.
- 27:45
I don’t want God to do it. God couldn’t keep out of my what God said that he would avenge Train 7 times. Not enough for me. Lame act. I will avenge myself. 70 * 7 And I’ll do it myself. And as far as the avenging is concerned, let anyone stare in my way. I destroy him, he’s dead.
- 28:12
Keep out of my way. Don’t try to hinder us. That was the attitude of Lamac. The words of Lamac are quoted by Jesus Christ and you have them in the 18th chapter of Matthew. And Jesus Christ here shows that we should, as far as that is concerned, we should just manifest the opposite characteristic to lay back. So that in the 18th chapter of Matthew, Peter came to the Lord Jesus Christ.
- 28:47
And he said to him in verse 21, How else shall my brother sin against me? And I forgive him till 7 times. And the Lord said unto him, I say not unto thee until 7 times, but until 70 * 7. 70 * 7. The very words of Lamac. And I believe that the Lord Jesus Christ was citing the words of Lamac, but in reverse. Whereas Lamac would avenge himself, 70 * 7. A follower of Jesus Christ will forgive. 70 * 7 In other words, to the Outmast, he will manifest exactly the opposite spirit to that which is shown by Lomac, which is the spirit of the world today.
- 29:36
And he’ll stand apart from the spirit of the world today in every way. And instead of following in its course in the way of Cain, as we have Jude mentioning, instead of following in the way of Cain, he will stand up for a different form of philosophy and defy the world in all that it’s means.
- 29:58
So that here you see Namac, the words of Lamac are counted by the words of Jesus Christ. And whilst we’re in the New Testament, yes it’s let us just briefly look at this, the words of Enoch, the contemporary of the Lamac and they are given in Jude and we’re going to look at these a little later.
- 30:19
But here though Enoch answered the boast of Lamac in the 14th verse of Jude, Enoch also the 7th from Adam. Now here’s the 7th from Adam in the line of Seth.
- 30:36
And if you count the name, you’ll find that Lamac is the 7th from Adam in the line of time. So here we have the 7th from Adam. And he prophesied of these saying. And here he’s answered the Lamac and try to develop the drama of the situation. On all hands they can be heard the music of Lamac. On all sides there can be heard the words of Lamech, the thought of Lamech.
- 31:02
And now here is the message of Enoch. Of Enoch stood earth and preached the gospel message and it wasn’t in any form of simple terms in terms of love and endearment. It was a challenging statement that is made by Enoch. The whole world covers with 10,000 of his Saints to execute judgment upon all and to convince all of their ungodly among them of their ungodly deeds which they have ungodly committed and of all their hard speech which ungodly sinners have spoken against him.
- 31:35
There was the answer to lame act, and you know did it fearlessly, standing out the challenge, the philosophy that was set forth by Lamech, and setting forth boldly and in a forthright way the coming judgments of Almighty God upon a generation that had turned so completely from His way. And so we come back to Genesis chapter 4, and we hug it again to the voice of Lamech. As he says, I have slain a man to my wounding, or as the margin renders it, I would slay a man if he wounded me. I would destroy a young man if he hurt me. If Kane shall be Avenged Sevenfold, truly, Lamech, 7 feet and sevenfold.
- 32:21
And that’s for the moment concludes the line of Kane. It concludes the line of Cain. And we come now to consider the line of Abel through Seth. So we read in verse 25 that Adam knew his wife again and she bare a son and called his name Seth. Now Seth means appointed, for God said she hath appointed me another seed instead of Abel, whom counselor.
- 32:53
And from this I would conclude that Adam and Eve had turned to God in prayer, asking the meaning of all that had gone on and had received the revelation from God. But this boy Seth, this baby that would be born to her, was appointed instead of Abel. So that in this boy’s Seth there was, as it were, a resurrection of Abel.
- 33:19
And as, of course, Abel puts forward to the Lord Jesus Christ, who was slain by the Jewish people, who inherited the punishment that was laid upon Cain, so in so in Seth there was, as it were, a resurrection of Abel. He was appointed instead of the instead of the Abel Tim Cain’s slew. So Seth now continues the line of Abel. And to serve to him also there was born a son, and he called his name Inos.
- 33:56
And then men began to call upon the name of Yahweh. He called his name Inos. Inos is quite a strange name to call a son. And as I said before, when we open this session, the names that are given to these these children, those names really are indicative of conditions. Now he knows, so he knows she’s a word that has elsewhere translated man. There are various Hebrew words that are rendered man. In the Bible.
- 34:32
You have the word Adam, which means man in his natural state. You have the word ish which means man in his elevated state, and you have the word inosh which means man in his weak state or even in his depraved state. These are different words for man. We will find in the next chapter the God called Adam Adam man.
- 35:00
But Adam selected the word Ish to define himself and so his wifes name was called Isha or woman because she was taken out of me. But here the son of Seth is called Enosh. Now if we turn over to Psalms 9, we find that the psalmist here uses this term. It’s translated men, but it’s the same term as is used there.
- 35:30
So in the Psalm 9 and at verse 20, a prophetic Psalm of the futures, the psalmist has put them in CEO Yahweh, that the nations may know themselves to be but men. And here we have the word enosch, that they might understand themselves to be but which? And depraved the word fear. There can be rendered teacher, and some render that particular verse give them a teacher, but they may know themselves to be but Enosh.
- 36:02
But we depraves men, and of course that is the stage here. Enosh self calls his son Enosh, which means a decline, and evidently there had been a decline among the sons of God. Has the environment affected them at that time so that Seth, he calls his son’s name Inos because of that decline?
- 36:29
Then we read. Men began to call upon the name of Yahweh, but that word began as a strange word that’s rendered in various ways in the Bible, and it can mean to profane to mean to profane. There was profanation in the invoking of the name, and some have paraphrased it. Then the sons of men desisted feast from calling on the name of Yahweh, or they profane that name.
- 37:09
To profane the name of Yahweh is not to live consistently with that name. In Proverbs chapter 30, the Proverbs, the wise man there says that he wished for neither poverty nor riches, lest being poor, he steal and take the name of Yahweh in vain. And therefore to take the name of Yahweh in vain is to live inconsistently with the calling of that name. In the 15th chapter of Acts of verse 14, we read that God is taking out of the Gentiles a people for His name. We are that people.
- 37:53
We are called out of the Gentiles for that name. We’re not called out of the Gentiles for salvation. Salvation will be given to us if we develop that which God wants to see in US. And what He wants to see in us is a reflection of Himself, His name. The name of the great in create is the family name into which we are called, and that family name will be manifested by us when we show the characteristics of that name if.
- 38:26
We do not. Show the characteristics of that name. We are not living in accordance with the call of God and we will not receive salvation. He will give salvation to those that manifestate, that name. Take for example the people of Israel. 2 million people left the land of Egypt. They were baptized into Moses and they sung the song of rejoicing on the other side.
- 38:52
How many reached the Promised Land? God said concerning them that He had taken them out for His name, that they might honour Him. When they didn’t do that, then they perish in the wilderness. Then the challenge is to us to recognise quite clearly the purpose of our porch. And the purpose of our porch is not primarily salvation, Not primarily salvation. It is to manifest the name of God and then we will receive salvation.
- 39:25
It is to make ourselves births of saving, and we are worth saving if we put something in US of the divine excellence, if something of God is put into us, so the Word of God is placed into us and we reflect that in a way of life. And then when we reflect that in a way of life, then God will be pleased with us and grant us salvation.
- 39:51
That is the purpose. So when they began to profane the name of Yahweh, they were not living consistently with the name. And that’s leading to the great the, the great tragedy of that time. When of course, the sons of God were found at the time of the flood in a state that God was not prepared to save them at all. And they were involved in the in the flood that destroyed the world.
- 40:19
That’s a very important statement at the end of chapter 4 of Genesis, a very important statement indeed. So that, you see, here is the hint of the trouble that is to come. Now we come over to the 5th chapter of Genesis, and I finish at 10:00. You know, is it 10:00 or 9:50? I finish.
- 40:49
I’ve meant 11:00 or 10:50. Is it right? That’s all right. Now we come to the 5th chapter of Genesis, a very, very important chapter, indeed particularly important in the development of this this theme. We read first of all in verse one. This is the book of the generations of Adam. A very important statement that you read that form of statement twice in the Bible. You read it here.
- 41:16
This is the book of the generations of Adam and you read it in Matthew chapter 1 and verse one. The book of the generations of Jesus Christ. 2 great books that are found there. The book of the generations of Adam. The book of the generations of Jesus Christ. Into the book of the generation of Adam everyone is placed who is born upon this earth.
- 41:36
They’re there automatically, but not so in the book of Jesus Christ. That is the book of life, and therefore only those are in the book of life. His names are retained there to the coming of the Lord Jesus Christ. 2 great books of the Bible. We can’t avoid being in one. We can strive to be in the other. And those two books of the Bible are in contrast. And you know what’s in the book of the generations of Adam? Read it in your Bible.
- 42:02
See it clearly, starkly, dramatically set forth. You’ll probably have missed it, but it’s found in the repetition of the words. And he died verse 5, And he died verse 8. And he died verse 11. And he died verse 14. And he died verse 17. And he died verse 20. And he died verse 27.
- 42:27
And he died verse 31. And he died. And with monotonous regularity this statement is made, emphasizing the hopelessness of the human race in spite of the long lives lived. Inevitably, the sad end awaits even a Methuselah. And this becomes the theme song of life. And The only exception in that book that is written there, The only exception in the long line of genealogy there, is our friend Enoch in regard to all the others. And he died, and he died, and he died. A man lives his little life and he dies. And when you were young, life seems like an endless, endless path that leads into the future.
- 43:43
But as age takes its toll, you come to appreciate better. The words of Paul redeem the time, for the days are evil, and the word means to buy it up because it is precious. There’s nothing quite as precious in our possession as time itself. And you know that time is distributed to each one of us in equal proportions.
- 44:23
There was 60 seconds to a minute. There’s 60 minutes to an hour. There’s 24 hours in a day. You. Each have got 60 seconds to the minute, 60 minutes to the hour, 24 hours to the day in each in equal proportions that that time is parceled out to each one of us. But how do we use it?
- 44:53
Do we waste that precious time, or do we use it effectively? Do we parcel it out in our minds, or do we squander time? And we can squander time. As I look back over my own life, if I had the living of it again, probably Megan’s big a mess of it. And that’s now.
- 45:19
But as I feel now, there would be different things that I would have done and different occupations to which I would have given myself. It’s too late now. All I can say is the limitations of my own life. And all I can see is if if anything is to be done now, it must be done immediately. When I was young, I did not understand it in that way. And that’s why Paul said redeem the time. That’s very valuable, because you’ve got nothing quite as precious as time, nothing at all. But how do we use that time?
- 46:02
And it’s good to parcel about in times. It’s good to parcel about and occupy a certain amount of time to a certain things during the day and not to waste that which is so precious. So we’re all in the book of the generation of Adam. And the theme song of that book is and he died. Now we come on and we read this in the day that God created man in the likeness of God made him.
- 46:30
That’s verse one in the likeness of God made he man. Now we know what is stated in Genesis chapter one in relation to the creation of man. God said let us make man in our image after our likeness and let them have dominion. And you know that verse in Genesis one verse 26.
- 46:49
Do you know this? That that verse is the foundation of every epistle of Paul’s. That first Genesis 126 is the foundation of every epistle of Paul. You trace it out. I’ve got a list of it here if you want it. But every epistle of Paul is referring to that particular verse and basing his own theology upon it, because that’s one of the most important verses you’ll find in Scripture.
- 47:13
And here is repeated God created man in the likeness of God made he him image and likeness. Image relates to shape likeness to capacity. And that is a very that the the the difference between the animals and man. His capacity, his capacity to take in divine principles and and precepts, his capacity to reveal those divine precepts and precepts and and principles. Your animals can’t do that.
- 47:41
His intelligence as they may be. They cannot take in divine principles. They cannot bring to more of those features. We can’t. We’ve been made that way and got us, made us specifically for that purpose that we might reflect to His glory specifically for that purpose. You know, on one occasion I was on the bait and we were going down some river in Bangkok and on all the sides of a little kitty’s head, dozens of them diving in the water, coming up with I was singing about this that every one of them has made in the with the capacity to reflect the glory of God. But how many do it?
- 48:17
So very few. And that country, there were millions of people there. And I said in that day to be flocking around everywhere. And I thought upon this, it worried me a bit. It worries me still. But so very, very few people use the brain that God gave them for the purpose that God gave them. You know, we are supposed to have two brains or two parts of one brain.
- 48:40
I don’t know what it is because I’m no scientist. And there’s a bridge between them both. But scientists call this other brain, the higher brain, the new brain, because of course, he says that we have evolved and therefore we have a former brain that the animals lack, and they call it the new brain. And that new brain is the brain that takes in these principles, these divine principles.
- 49:02
It acts something like that. The lower brain tells us what we what we ought to have. I’m hungry. So the brain says you’re hungry, you better get some food. And if I’ve got no scruples, I’ll go and get that food. I’ll break into somewhere and. Get that food like an animal will. But the higher brain says, look, you better not do that. A policeman might be there and you’ll be taking taken into custody.
- 49:26
So the higher brain works on the lower brain and says, no, it’s not the time for that. That higher brain can be trained in divine principles. The lower brain can’t. The lower brain is dominated by the propensities, the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes and the pride of life. And it’s in conflict with that higher brain.
- 49:45
And siders tell us who are quite ignorant of the Bible, that the more you use that higher brain, the more you get into a pattern of so using it. That’s the same, I suppose like a thing with the the gramophone needle goes around and it gets in the track and it goes around that way and you create habit that way. And scientists will tell us that if that brain is exercised, that brain will dominate the lower brain. But if it’s ignored, it won’t, the lower brain will dominate the higher brain.
- 50:16
Now, I know nothing about that, but I do know that the apostle Paul tells us that we can think with the flesh or we can think with the Spirit. The thinking of the flesh he contrasts with the thinking of the Spirit. And the Spirit Word is impressed upon that higher brain. It’s the principles of God’s Word, and we need to exercise it that way. And we have been created so that we can take in those impressions and reflect those impressions back in a way of life. And that is what God is saying here. He created man, not the dot.
- 50:50
He created man not to follow out the principles of the flesh. He created man to be like sheep. And he gave him the ability with a brain that’s able to take in divine principles and reflect them in a way of life that will build into his life, a characteristic that makes him like God.
- 51:12
You know, it said with the 22nd chapter, Genesis, that as far as Abraham was concerned, he was to OfferUp his only beloved son, his only beloved son or begotten sons. But he it speaks of only one son, but he had two sons, but he really only had one son because a son should be a reflection of his father. And I and Isaac was that not Ishmael. So we only have one son.
- 51:44
They could count 2 in his family. We are called to be sons of God, to be of God into our lives. We do that with the Word of God.
