This is Idyllwild 1982, Second period Class 2. Our teachers, Brother HP Mansfield, his general subject before the Deluge, is titled for Today in the Garden of Eden.
- 0:21
My dear brethren and citizens in Christ Jesus, let us first of all summarise what we attempted to put before you yesterday. We pointed out that we believe that the world is facing insoluble problems. These problems inevitably will lead to Armageddon. We also pointed out that the environment of today is deteriorating even morally, and that we too became become victims of our environment.
- 0:52
We are living in times that are comparable to those of the days of Noah and it’s wise for us to recognise that fact and make due preparation to meet it. The Lord Jesus Christ in the 21st chapter of Luke and at verse 25, he says they would be upon the earth. This stress of nations with perplexity and the word perplexity in its Greek form means without a way of escape, insoluble problems that the world will not be able to solve. The problems facing America today are beyond the ability of Mr. Reagan to resolve them.
- 1:32
He cannot control over 200 million people. It’s beyond the ability of man to do it. The only problem is that man doesn’t recognize that it is beyond his ability to do it. In Australia we’ve only got 15,000,000 people in about the same size area of land as the United States. But even there Mr. Fraser doesn’t know how to control the people.
- 1:55
But of course, Australians are more difficult, I suppose, to control. Believe that as it may, there we have the situation that’s without a way of escape and it matters not what man it is or combination of men. They’re never going to extricate themselves from the problems that face them today. And inevitably and dramatically and drastically, the world will drift on to worse conditions leading to the flood, Not a flood of water, but a flood of destruction at the coming of the Lord Jesus Christ.
- 2:28
Now that’s all very interesting, but it imposes a responsibility upon us to do something about that. And what we can do, the Lord Himself pointed out in that same chapter, verse 34, He says take heed to yourselves how this applies to us personally, not to anyone else to ourselves. Take heed to yourselves that’s at any time your hearts be overcharged with surpassing and drunkenness and the cares of this life. And so that day come upon you unawares. Now to be overcharged is to over eat. And when a person over eats, he becomes dull and drowsy and not vigilant, not awake, he tends to fall asleep. Now says the Lord Jesus Christ, take heed to yourselves less than any time you overeat with the Serpentine and drunkenness and the cares of this life.
- 3:23
So you see, you can overeat of the pleasures and cares of this life, and this is an age when you have cares and pleasures clouding upon one that’s never before in our time. And we need to exercise extreme care lest that day come upon you unawares. So that the cares of this life creep upon us to such an extent that we really haven’t got sufficient time to look after our eternal destiny.
- 3:53
And we hope that Almighty God that Jesus Christ his Son in the mercy that they exhibit will make good the deficiencies of us this time. But you see, there is the challenge upon us. And he says for as a snare away mouth readers, that as a falling trap, as a snare shall it come on all of them that dwell on the face of the whole earth.
- 4:15
And brethren and sisters that’s facing the world today, even as this is the time of trouble such as never was, that snare is going to catch them. And they’re going to be unaware of it until it’s there and it clamps down upon them. They’re going to be caught in that trap. The world about us and Jesus Christ warns that we too can be brought into such a frame of mind as that that because our minds are so centered upon the business and pleasure of life that we fail to exercise that vigilance in our own conduct that will ensure for us that we will escape that snare.
- 4:52
Let us ever place before our minds the possibility of the end of Jesus Christ says it here. We might be caught up in the snare that’s going to ensnare all them that dwell on the face of the whole earth. What are we to do? He tells us in verse 36. He says keep awake, be vigilant.
- 5:10
Watch ye therefore, and pray always that she may be accounted worthy to escape all these things that shall come to pass, and to stand before the Son of Man, that is, to stand approved. And we read. A little cameo in verse 37 and 38 of the whole purpose of Jesus Christ. And in the daytime he was teaching in the temple and at night he went out on a bed in the mount of that is called the Mount of Olives. So he was teaching in the temple when he ascended. And of course when he finished his teaching, in a literal sense, he ascended into heaven and all the people came early in the morning to hear him in the temple for to hear him. And of course, in an anti typical sense, that’s going to happen in the morning of a new day when the temple isn’t going established.
- 6:00
Then the people will come again to hear him at that time. Now you see here we have the the the problems that are facing us today as we live in days that are comparable with Noah. And we must remind ourselves that it is not sufficient that we realise that we are living at the time of the end.
- 6:18
That’s not sufficient. We must do something about it. And what we must do about it applies to ourselves. Take heed to yourself and as to the extent that we’ve taken to ourselves the word of God and strengthen ourselves in the Scriptures that we will prepare for that time. It’s not enough for us to say, look, we let me get the top of the end. We’ve got to be vigilant.
- 6:42
We’ve got to be that. We must put into ourselves that motivation that will enable us to do that effectively before our God. That comes from that book alone. To the extent that we feed upon that book, to the extent that we study it in depth, to the extent that we leave a Bible school and open that book in our home, we get down to help us, Israel and Eureka, and start to study those books objectively with the objective that we might put that into our mind so that it might be reflected in our life. To that extent we are carrying out the things of Jesus Christ. You know, years ago, many, many years ago too, too long ago, we commenced what we call the Elpis Israel classes back in the Adelaide area.
- 7:25
And in those Elpis Israel classes we had a little objective and the objective was a threefold one. We were to strengthen ourselves personally. So we did it through the study of the Word, with the help of Brother Thomas. Secondly, we were to become a key, a set of strengths in the body of the ecclesia.
- 7:48
And thirdly, we were to transmit that knowledge in the proclamation of it in the world outside. And that was the order in which we try to carry it out, first in ourselves, then to the ecclesia, then to the world outside. And I believe that we need something like that even now, at this crucial time in which we’re living.
- 8:09
There’s a need to maintain standards in doctrine and in practice and in the work of the truth, that when the Lord Jesus Christ returns, we might be found ready and waiting for him. Now our proposition is that the events leading up to the flood foreshadow the events that are taking place in the earth at this time. We read one or two passages of Scripture to remind us of that, for example in Romans chapter 15 and verse 4. And we read there that whatsoever things were written at four time were written for our learning, that we through patience and comfort of the Scriptures might have hope. They were written for our learning all these things, all the events leading up to the flood, as well as other things in the Old Testament Scriptures where we’re written for our learning, that we, through patient and comfort of the Scriptures might have hope.
- 9:06
In the First Corinthians chapter 10 and at verses 11 and 12, the apostle Paul says this about these things that are therein recorded. These things happen unto them as in circles or types, and they are written for our admonition. Upon whom the ends of the world come. Wherefore let him that thinketh his standeth take heed, lest he fall. So these things were written as types. Again we turn to the 4th chapter of Galatians. And you know, in these words that I’m going to cite for you, I think we have a key to the unfolding of the book of Genesis.
- 9:50
So in Galatians chapter 4 and verse 23, the apostle Paul says, well, verse 21, he says, tell me ye the desire to be under the law. Do you hear the law? Ford is written that Abraham had two sons, the one by a bond maid, the other by a free woman. But he who was of the bondwoman was born after the flesh, but he of the free woman was by promise. Now that’s a historical fact.
- 10:21
It’s recorded in the book of Genesis. We know all about the birth of Isaac and the birth of Ishmael, the sons of Abraham. We know the circumstances of it all. We’re invited to study it. That Ishmael was the son of Hagar, that Isaac was the son of Sarah. They are plain historical details they recorded there. Now Paul goes on to tell us why they are recorded in such detail, because he’s there’s in verse 24, which things are an allegory for.
- 10:54
These are two covenants. Though Paul is saying when you read the book of Genesis, when you read about Ishmael and you read about Isaac, remember these are allegorical, they’re historical. Don’t get me wrong there, they’re completely historical. All the book of Genesis is historical and literal. But they also have an allegorical significance. And in that allegorical significance, in the parables thus expressed in living characters, there is set forth before us the purpose of Almighty God and also what He expects of us.
- 11:31
The book of Genesis is the key bed is the seed bed of the Bible. The rest of the Bible is merely an extension of Genesis. In Genesis you have every other part of the Bible, including the prophecies of Daniel and including the symbolism of the apocalypse. In Genesis you have the Caribbean. You have them also in the apocalypse.
- 11:54
In Genesis you have the paradise closed. In the apocalypse you have an open. In Genesis you have a curse imposed, in Apocalypse it’s and removed, and the whole of the Apocalypse is there in a seed form in the book of Genesis. Very remarkable and a very wonderful study as far as that is concerned.
- 12:16
And therefore, you see in that Genesis you have all that you have in the rest of the Bible, but it’s in its seed form. You know Abraham saw the day of Armageddon, no doubt, in the 14th chapter of Genesis. Abraham saw in pipe the dispersion of his own people, no doubt in the in the events that took place in relation to Ishmael.
- 12:45
Abraham foresaw the development of the ecclesias in California and in Australia and all over the world. No doubt when you consider in depth the foreshadowing of the events that Isaac went through and the life of Joseph gave the writer of Genesis, Moses, the greatest detail in relation to the Lord Jesus Christ. The book of Genesis opens with a statement that God made. So all that he made the behold, it was very good. The book of Genesis closes with a strange statement, a coffin in Egypt.
- 13:29
That are the four words by which the book closes. Everything very good to commence with a coffin in Egypt, Death in exile. When you look in the coffin, there’s Joseph. And when the Israelites are wandering through the wilderness, they’re carrying the coffin of Joseph. You can trace it through the Bible. They’re bearing that heavy coffin as they go wearying through the desert.
- 13:52
When the spies went out and I came back and I said the problems are too great for us. Not that we’re afraid of ourselves, but our children. Maryland says your children will reach the land, but you’ll die in the wilderness. Now pick up the coffin. And they carry that coffin on for 38 more years. They celebrated the death of Joseph, writes for the wilderness.
- 14:16
And so the type flows on, You see, even as we in the wilderness of life bear the tokens of Christ’s death. Just take one more passage here in Genesis chapter 2 and verse 8. And see how beautifully this is expressed in Scripture, because you have here, that’s in the in Genesis 2 and verse 8, that there was a garden planted eastward in Eden, and there he put the man whom he had formed that in verse 7, That’s the word.
- 14:48
Verse 1 He formed man of the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and man lived. So he formed man of the dust of the ground, breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and man lived. When we go over to the New Testament of the second of Timothy chapter 3 and verse 16, Paul says that all scripture is given by inspiration of God, but the word inspiration in the Greek is God breathed. All scripture is God breathed.
- 15:22
When we open that book and study that book, there we have the breath of God entering into a dust body and giving it a new life. And that’s what you have foreshadowed in the Garden of Eden. It’s there and we can look as it were in the Garden of Eden and we can see the body of of Adam on the ground there, inanimate, just formed by God out of the. Dust of the earth.
- 15:45
But God wants not that. He wants the manifestation of his own qualities in that dead body. So he breathes into him the breath of life, and he becomes a living soul. When that book is breathed into us, God is breathing into us and creating in us a living. Body that will. Reflect to the glory of His holy name. And so we have in this particular part the work of God as far as Adam was concerned.
- 16:13
But God wasn’t interested only in Adam living. He wanted the development of Adam and that took place under the law that was given to Him in the 2nd chapter of Genesis, until of course, the time came for marriage. Can we read in verse 18? And that it was not good that a man should be alone. I will make and help meet for him the letters in the margin of your Bible.
- 16:39
You’ll have an alternate rendition to the word help meet you have instead of that the Hebrew is as before him. The Hebrew word is at his face, and the meaning of the Hebrew word is this the counterpart of him. So God is going to make of him one that will be his counterpart. Who will be a?
- 17:03
Reflection of himself, he’s going to make one like that and this is going to be his bride. This is going to be the the the marriage that is going to take place out of that one that has got living because God breathed. So he’s going to make one who is going to be his counterpart. And of course none of the animals would fit into that position.
- 17:28
And so we read that in this Bible, the 21st verse, that he took one of the ribs of Adam and closed up the flesh thereof. You could take your analytical concordance, look up that word rib. Find where. Else it has. Ever rendered rib? And you will find that there is liver anywhere, meaning rib.
- 17:48
It means side. He took the side of Adam. He took one part of Adam, he took the feminine qualities of that, and he built up from those feminine qualities one that is going to be his bride. That’s what Almighty God did then. And with the bride, with the bridegroom, and with the fusion of the both qualities, there became the perfect union of that glorious marriage in Eden that anticipates a far more glorious marriage when the second Adam returns and he sees the counterpart of himself, and he takes her to himself, and they become one.
- 18:31
Because as Adam said, this is burn of my bones and flesh of my flesh. So the Lord Jesus Christ will be able to say to His multitude of this bride, she is burn of my bone and flesh of my flesh. And this is a unique marriage. Never has there been a marriage like that in Eden until the glitter Adam returns and until his bride is brought to him, because the bride of this Adam was formed out of the side of Adam, and the Lord Jesus Christ bride is formed out of his side as well. And you see there we have the qualities of boats, and He wants 1.
- 19:08
When he returns, who is the counterpart of himself and the purpose of our gathering at this Bible school? Or any other meeting is that we might learn of the qualities of Jesus Christ, that we might mold our lives on those qualities so that the beauty that we see there, we may reflect ourselves and we become the counterpart of Him that has created us.
- 19:32
It’s a beautiful picture that is presented in this this marriage in Eden and when you come up to the other parts of the word of God, you find how you this marriage is this is now bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh. She shall be called woman, Woman Isha, which means out of man. And then it’s the title that will be given us in the age to come, because we will be developed out of Christ, because he was taken out of man.
- 20:10
Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife, and they shall be 1 flesh. And we go over now to the 45th Psalm, and we see that bride and bridegroom, and we hear the commendation of the bridegroom onto the bride in these perms in Psalm 45 and verse 10.
- 20:29
Hakuna daughter. And consider and incline your ear. That’s what we’ve got to do today, that we might learn of Jesus Christ and build His life into our own lives. We’ve got to first of all, hearken, ponder and meditate and incline our ear to to study in depth these things. Forget also thy own people and thy Father’s house. He shall leave his father and his mother, and shall be joined unto his wife, For he is thy Lord, and worship thou him. And you can see how the Genesis chapter 2, verse 21 onwards, she’s reflected in these words of the bride as she stands with her bridegroom in the age to car. Because in this 45th Psalm you have of course, the bride and his consort, the king and his consort in the age to car. We go over to the new.
- 21:30
Testament And we see the foreshadowing of the marriage of Genesis taken up further by the apostle Paul, so that Paul in dealing with the very principles of marriage launches into an exposition upon Genesis chapter 2 and verse 21. He says in verses 25 and 27 of Ephesians chapter 5, husbands, love your wives. Even if Christ loved the ecclesia and gave himself for it.
- 22:01
Now there’s the measure of love commended, a self sacrificing love, in which of course in the case of Christ, and this is the ideal set before us. There was a greater love for the bride than there was for life itself, that He might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of the water by the Word, that He might present it to himself with glorious ecclesia, not having spot or wrinkle or any such thing, but it should be holy and without blemish. Then he says in verse 30.
- 22:35
For we are members of his body, of his flesh, and of his bones. For this course shall a man leave his father and his mother. The world outside. But and shall be joined unto his wife. Notice it doesn’t say, shall become his wife, does it? But he shall be joined unto his wife. So you see the.
- 22:59
Wife is a multitude in this wife, and they too shall be 1. Flesh. This is a great secret, says Paul. That I speak not of ordinary marriage. I speak concerning Christ. And the Ecclesia, and then he. Reverts to ordinary marriage. So you see he has taken this picture that’s foreshadowing in the book of Genesis and he is showing how that has an application to our call in Christ Jesus.
- 23:22
Now in the 3rd chapter of Genesis we read how that the the sin entered into the world and we read concerning Genesis 315 and the great promise that has made of redemption. And in verse 16 we are told concerning the woman under the woman he said, I will greatly multiply thy sorrow and thy conception in sorrow shall thou bring forth.
- 23:45
Children notice that it says in sorrow, not in pain, but in sorrow. And of course this has been brought about by the prevalence of sin and death. That’s going to cause a greater sorrow now that sin and death has entered into the picture, and the woman’s sorrow is going to be greater than the man’s, as inevitably is the case under circumstances such as this. A woman feels things much more than a man. I am sure of that.
- 24:12
I know my own relationships with my own children. I’d like to kill some of them sometimes, but my wife always comes in and she relieves them of the pressure. So you see, there is, there is the principle there. I will greatly multiply thy sorrow and thy conception. But what I want to draw your attention to is the concluding part of that verse. Thy desire shall be to thy husband and he shall rule over thee.
- 24:37
Now that word desire occurs again in chapter 4 and verse 7, and we’re going to look at it in the relationships of Cain and Abel. So it’s not what we would normally call desire. It is there in Genesis 4, verse 7, in relationship to the Cain and Abel and their relationship one with the others, and the conclusion version of the Bible and others also render that phrase as Thy restoration shall be subject to thy husband, and he shall rule over thee, thy restoration shall be subject to thy husband, and he shall rule over thee. Who’s it?
- 25:20
Talking. About obviously the second Adam. It’s speaking to the antidypical Eve. It’s speaking to the bride of Christ and her restoration to the state of that she originally had when there was complete union with her and Adam and with God in heaven, complete fellowship. That restoration, which is a great, desirable thing, is subject to the husband, in our case, Jesus Christ, and he shall rule over thee.
- 25:53
And that’s the only way that we’re going to receive restoration in the age to come and form a part of the multitudinous Christ, so long as Jesus Christ rules over us. So long as we listen to the words of Jesus Christ and recognize them as authoritative and we implement those words in our lives, then we will attain under the restoration that is to be found in the age to come when of course the Lord Jesus Christ will be united to His bride. You can imagine we reach that even now. You remember how that the Apostle Paul says in Galatians chapter 3, there is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bum nor 33, there’s neither male nor female, but all the one in Christ Jesus in a measure that is that what is we’re reaching forward to?
- 26:48
And remember what he said in his prayer in John chapter 21 and verse 21 when he prayed that they might be 1 as their father out of me and I am thee, that they may be one on us. There is a glorious unity established in those words of Jesus Christ and in those in that prayer of Jesus Christ and in the words of the apostle Paul, a glorious unity that only in a token way do we attain unto at the present moment.
- 27:16
Our restoration is subject unto our husband, the apostle Paul in the first of Timothy chapter 2, he takes this matter up also, and he speaks considering this matter in Eden, and he shows how powerful is the foreshadowing that is expressed there. Let the women learn in silence with all subjection. I suffer not a woman to teach, not to usurp authority over the man, but to be. For Adam was first formed, and Eve, but Adam was not deceived, but the woman being deceived was in the transgression. Now here’s the point in verse 3015. Notwithstanding, he shall be saved in childbearing, if they continue in faith and charity and holiness with sobriety. Now in the Greek, the definite article is given before childbearing.
- 28:09
He shall be saved in the childbearing. The childbearing is the seed of the woman promised in Genesis 315 and the she of this verse is the anti typical Eve who is going to be saved through the childbearing. And notice in that verse that in the pronouns you’ll have both a singular and plural pronoun. He shall be saved if they continue the she is the anti typical Eve.
- 28:44
He will be say without any doubt, but whether we’re in that anti typical Eve is a matter of doubt. And you see that they of that particular verse relate to the individual members of the she. They relate to the individual members of the of the bride of Christ. They are the multitudinous members of that one bride of Christ. The bride will be saved through the childbearing that was promised in Genesis 3, verse 15, and we will fall apart if we continue in faith and charity and holiness with sobriety. So you see the Apostle Paul here. He is taking on, as it were, the foreshadowing in the Garden of Eden, and he is applying it to our spiritual life in Christ Jesus in the 5th.
- 29:38
Chapter of Ephesians again in verse 22 he says, wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as unto the Lord, and we are the. Bride of Christ so that everything that is spoken concerning women here we. Ought to apply. As the bride of Christ, irrespective as to what our sex might be, we should.
- 30:02
See Christ as a solidarity, one who to whom we should submit. And we should build into our lives the principles that apply. And then if we do that, we will experience that wonderful, that wonderful expression of praise that is found in the 31st of Proverbs where the virtuous woman is, is outlined. And we read up. We read in verse 28 of that 31st of Proverbs. Her husband also praises her.
- 30:34
And our husband will praise us. If we are among that virtuous woman. Then many daughters have done virtuously. But Thou excel us them all. Favour is deceitful, and beauty is mine. But a woman that fareth Yahweh, she shall be praised. Give her the fruit of her hands, and let her own works praise her in the gates. So you see, that will be the commendation that we will be bestowed upon the multitude, and as Christ in the age to come, so there we have a hope.
- 31:04
In that chapter in Genesis, Genesis 3, we have a hope and we have the means whereby the woman can attain unto the original state of the unity that she had enjoyed with Adam and with God. And now in that same book, in this third of Genesis, we have the response of Adam. Adam is told in verse 19 that dust thou art, and unto dust thou shall return.
- 31:29
And now comes a very strange part of this chapter, because immediately on top of that, notice this in verse 20 we read Adam called his wife’s name Eve, because she is the mother of all living. Now first of all, God says, or the Angel says to Adam, thus thou art, and unto thus shalt thou return. Adam responds to the to the Angel. Look, my wife’s name is Eve.
- 31:55
She’s the mother of all living, in other words. What? Adam is saying it’s not Adam joint in that verse. It’s a natural reaction from what has been stated. Adam is told dust thou art, and unto dust thou our return. But now he’s better change his wife’s name. To Eve and Eve, men’s lights and Adam’s response to the statement that he’s getting dies.
- 32:18
But what about the covenant, the promise you’ve given to my wife? I’m going to call her Eve. She’s the mother of all living. And therefore, though I am, I am given over to death. There is lice there. We can attain unto life through the seed of the woman that’s been promised. So he calls. Her name Eve, which is from the Hebrew word cow, which means of course, lice.
- 32:41
Because he says she is the mother of all living. So that what Adam is saying is, though we are subject to death, there is this great hope of life. And then God shows Adam what he’s got to do if he wants to attain into that life. And to Adam also to his wife.
- 32:57
Did the Lord God make coats of skins and clothe them? He took an animal and we have the first death now He took that animal, He shed the blood of that animal. He took the the skins of the animal and he clothed them with the skins and he clothed never believe in the Garden of Eden.
- 33:13
With those skins. And he emphasized at that point what is necessary for life, what is absolutely necessary for life. And Adam looked upon death now, and he saw it in that animal. He saw the blood of that animal shed that he might have a covering. And he was taught the principles of sacrifice, that a life must be given unto God. If of course, we want to attain unto life in the Kingdom of God, and therefore, you see, as far as the animal was concerned, it thought it was representative of Adam that if he wanted to attain unto the life through the covenant made with his mice, then he must offer his life.
- 33:57
As a sacrifice. That his life must be given in that way. For blood is the symbol of life. The life of the flesh is in the birth. And God says, I have given it on the altar for you. Life of the flesh is in the blood. When we meet around the table of the Lord, and we take the wine and we drink that wine, we say that this represents Christ’s blood. But by blood we ought to mean life. Because that is what it signifies. And blood that is poured out under God is a life devoted blood that was put upon an altar is a life that’s given to God where we take that glass of wine in our hands to drink. That here are the life giveth to God. And it’s given to God by the denial of flesh. It’s only when flesh is put to death modify the deeds of the body, says Paul.
- 34:51
Put it to. Death, and render unto God the life that you’re going to give him. The same as when they took that animal, and they slew that animal, and they saw their blood, and they put the blood by the altar, or Plumb the altar, and that life of that animal was now given unto God, and the worshipper that was worshipping before his God identified himself with that animal.
- 35:13
Otherwise it was useless. God says I don’t want just sacrifices, take them and eat them yourself. But God didn’t want their sacrifices, He commanded. Them. But he wanted them in the right way. He wanted the worshipper to identify himself with that offering. Now the worshipper got that animal. He. Held the the the head back and he cut the throat of that animal.
- 35:38
You can imagine what would happen. The death readings of that animal as the blood poured out, the agony of that animal. And that was teaching the worshipper that he’s got to agonize in order that he might reach a way of life that is satisfactory to Almighty God. And so Adam and Eve were clothed with these garments that was placed upon them, and sacrifice was established.
- 36:05
And we have in the last verse of that chapter, where you have the Caribbean at the east of the garden with a flaming sword to keep the way of the tree of life. The words have been rendered and can be rendered at the east of the Garden of Eden. He caused to dwell in a.
- 36:24
Tabernacle. The. Carabin, even the flaming sword, and the sword was there. It was a flaming sword, because the sword was there to kill and the fire was there to consume. And a person brought an offering to that place east of Eden, and the offering was slain, and the offering was consumed by fire, and it became a bird offering unto God. One of the great principles brought out in the book of. Leviticus, where you have the bird. Offerings in detail expressed A person that’s going to offer a bird offering went to the herd.
- 37:01
He overlooked his herd. He took the. Animal that he didn’t want to give up the animal that he wanted to keep the best animal of that third. He took that animal away. He took it to the Tabernacle. He slew that animal. He dismembered that animal. He inspected every part of it. He. Washed it inside and outside. That he got the pieces, that he put those pieces upon the altar and placed them in such an order upon the altar that the fire might go through it very easily.
- 37:31
That fire was no ordinary fire. That fire was not made with matches. It was a. Divine fire that came down from heaven, and it consumed the offering upon the altar. And of course, that fire consuming that offering upon the altar, friends, transpose that flesh into something that ascended unto God as a sweet smelling savour. So that through the means of that sacrifice, flesh itself ascended unto God, as it were, with a sweet smelling savour, because it was consumed by the fire. And that fire was the fire of that word. And the apostle Paul in writing to the Thessalonians, he says French, not the Spirit.
- 38:13
So you see, they had to wash carefully, clean everything and allow that fire to go through it. When we meet around the table of our Lord, we are virtually telling our God we’re prepared to offer ourselves a like manner. And of course. It’s. To the extent that the fire, that word will consume us. But we ourselves will become a burnt offering acceptable unto God.
- 38:42
Now that was taught in Eden. And you see these things were the principles of religion that was being set before the people. The the people out of believe in the Eden and of course the descendants of Adam and Eve, the immediate family they were taught the principles of divine worship and then introduce this to us. The circumstances of Genesis chapter 4 that takes us to the time when there was foreshadowed in the Garden of Eden, the first advent of the Lord and we’re going to see how the Christ himself took hold of what took place there and applied it to his own day.
- 39:17
Now we read in that early verses of the Genesis chapter 4 concerning pain and Abel, and here we have two sons of Adam and Eve, two sons of Eve, but one represents the seat of the woman and the other represents the seed of the serpent. They were two anti typical seeds. And of course, when you come over to the second of Corinthians Chapter 11, you find the time is also represented by the apostle Paul. He says, Would to God you would bear with me a little in my folly, and indeed bear with me, for I am jealous over you with godly jealousy.
- 39:53
For I have espoused you to one husband, that I may prevent you as a chaste virgin unto Christ. But I see you, lest by any means, as the serpent beguiled Eve through his subtlety, so your mind should be corrupted from the simplicity in Christ. For if there come another preaching, another Jesus, then we have not preached on. Receive another spirit which we have not received, or another gospel which we have not accepted. You might wear thou well with him. Now you see what the Apostle Paul is saying. Is here we have the antitypical Eve and the Ecclesia, but that antitypical Eve, like even Eden is. Capable of producing a seed of the woman or a seed of the serpent.
- 40:35
And that’s what happened here. And right down through the centuries, within the same community, you have these two types of people. You had them in the. Ecclesias of Asia, you’ve had it ever since. The danger is always present. We’ve got to exercise extreme vigilance. We’ve got to be extremely careful and notice this fact that of these two sons of Adam.
- 40:56
Here. They were both very religious. They both wanted to worship God. They were both prepared to sacrifice. But that simply is not enough. It’s not enough to be religious. It’s it’s, it’s, it’s not enough to want to sacrifice. It’s not enough to want to worship God. There were ways and forms in which this must be done. And if we don’t conform to those ways and forms, we’re going to find ourselves in the position that Crane found himself when he brought his offerings before his God. So you see in this 4th chapter we read concerning these two boys that one was a keeper of the sheep and train was a tiller of the ground.
- 41:40
Nothing wrong with tillers of the ground with agriculturalists. They are people that are dependent upon the mercy of God. But in the relationship between and Abel, that description is very effective. Because you see, the tiller of the ground has got his eyes upon the earth. He’s got his eyes looking at that earth all the time. Not so the shepherd.
- 42:01
The shepherd’s eyes is out on the horizon looking for cast your land for the sheep that he’s leading. He learns the principles of shepherding, and he learns the dependence of the sheep upon him. And his eyes are always to the fore. Looking. For something ahead that characterized those two boys, Kate and Abel, One was looking for immediate results, The other had his eyes upon the the horizon. And so you see, do we have in the case of Cain and Abel, a keeper of the sheep, Cain or tiller of the ground in process of time it came to pass the the expression process of time implies a set time.
- 42:45
So there was a set time when they would make their offerings, and Cain brought up the fruit of the ground and. Offering unto Yahweh. Now that’s quite good. He wanted a sacrifice, you see. He brought on the fruit of the ground a sacrifice unto Yahweh. It was the labor of His hands. He’d worked hard at that, and now he wanted to show the labor of his hands in a sacrifice to his God.
- 43:10
Nothing wrong with that, but it stopped there. He would, by his own means, bring that which is acceptable unto God. We just simply can’t do that. We’re absolutely dependent upon the motivation of Christ. We depended upon Christ in life. And it’s not enough for what I do to gain for me the approbation of Almighty God.
- 43:36
I might say that. I might say, well look at Lord, what I have done. You know, the Lord himself said many shall say on that day, look, we’ve done this and we’ve done that. We’ve preached here, we’ve preached there and Christ will say I never knew you, I never knew you. And then we’ve been preaching about you in the streets. We’ve done this for you.
- 43:55
We’ve travelled here, we’ve travelled there. I never knew you. It’s the labour of our hands. We’re going to do it ourselves. We never will do it ourselves. And that was the first lesson that was impressed upon the the Cain and Abel in this time. Not that there’s anything wrong with the labour of our hands if it’s done in the right way.
- 44:19
And notice now in verse four that Abel he also brought. Now that word also means. In addition, Abel in addition brought. He brought the labour of his hands. But in addition, he brought something that God had given him, which was the first leaves of his flock and the fat bail of the fullness of it all.
- 44:50
So it wasn’t that there were two different sacrifices. Cain brought of the fruit of the ground, and so did Abel. But in addition, Abel brought that animal and he offered that animal to God. Cain gave of his labour, so did Abel, but in addition. Abel gave his life, and that life was tokened in the animal, and that animal was the best animal of his flock, the firstlings of his flock.
- 45:26
That animal was presented with a fat thereof, the fullness of energy there, and Abel gave all that as far as the offering, his offering was concerned. He gave all that, that he might render a a proper sacrifice unto God. Now over in Hebrews Chapter 11 and verse 4 we are told. How he did. That because Paul in that particular place, he says this by faith.
- 45:58
Abel offered unto God a more excellent sacrifice. He did it by faith. And what is faith? Well, faith is the evidence of things not seen. Faith is a confident anticipation of things hoped for. Is the way by the Thomas renders verse one a confident anticipation of things hoped for. That is what motivated Abel, a confident anticipation of things hoped for.
- 46:27
By his confident anticipation of things hoped for, Abel offered under God a more excellent sacrifice. Abel wanted something more than life could give today. Cain brought the first the ground what is came immediately to his hands. I will soar beyond all that to that which God had promised him, and that was faith that motivated that man. So his eyes were on the distant horizon even as they were when he was looking for pastor for his sheep. And that is the faith, brethren and sisters, that should motivate us at all times.
- 47:06
A couple of anticipation of things hopeful, a full persuasion of things not see, and not merely a knowledge of it all, but a conviction of it all. A conviction that will drive us on to accomplish what God wants on us. He respected as to the circumstances of life. So we defy the world and all that it stands for, because we know that we can look beyond these things to the glory that’s going to flood this earth when the Lord Jesus Christ returns.
- 47:33
By faith Abel off and unto God. A more excellent sacrifice than Cain, by which he obtained witness that he was righteous. God testifying of his gifts, and by it he be dead yet speaketh. We’re going to say that the voice of Cain, Abel cried out from the ground and he be dead spake, and God moved on his behalf. And in the 12th chapter of the Hebrews, the apostle goes on to say concerning Jesus, the mediator of a new covenant, he speaks of the blood of sprinkling that speaketh better things than that of Abel.
- 48:29
Because you see, the blood of Abel cried out for vengeance, that the blood of Jesus Christ gives forgiveness. And so as the blood of Abel was effective in that God moved on his behalf. In the case of Jesus Christ, it extends to a greater degree. It brings forgiveness to us and therefore speak of greater things than those of Abel.
- 48:58
We plan, God willing, to trace this further on our next session tomorrow.
