Welcome to good for selfie and talks. I’m Levi and I’m Chris and I’m Brian, thank you for joining us this week. On this podcast, we select one taco week to help us get the Bible in our daily news feed. We post a new episode of the start of each week with a short intro before. Hand to kind of set the stage for the talk. You’re about to listen to and now let’s talk more about this week’s talk
- 0:50
for this week. We’re listening to an excitation that was sent in. As a suggestion, it was given by brother James Taylor, right? At the end of 2021, he’s basing Education on Colossians chapter 1. So if you’d like to read through that, that was the reading that they did before he gave this excitation and the title of his expectation is the supremacy and the sufficiency of Christ.
- 1:13
And what I’ve found this to be a really powerful excitation because it was a good reminder, as brother, James was looking at the Ecclesia of colossi, how the dangers in the ideas that Paul was warning the Colossians about apply to us just as much now, Now, as they did, then looking at those lessons is a good reminder to us and brother, James did a fantastic job.
- 1:39
He gets really passionate about it, especially by the end of the excitation, which I found to be particularly moving when I listen to it. So I thought the situation was a really powerful one. It was a good reminder of what we should be looking for. As we’re going through things today, as well as the things that we went through, with our brothers and sisters, in the city of colossi back.
- 1:59
When I was writing this letter so I hope that you find it to be as powerful as encouraging as I did as always, please continue to send in any suggestions or talks or feedback that you might have. We’re always open to those and just this week we’re talking about how much we appreciate the suggestions and it makes finding talks that we can share with all of you so much easier than it used to be.
- 2:23
And we greatly appreciate that. So thank you as always and with that, I will turn it. It over to brother James Taylor for his excitation the supremacy and sufficiency of Christ. But why the exultation this morning you want to take some time with our brothers and sisters in the colossian, a closure? There are smaller closure.
- 2:48
In a relatively, small town, tucked away in the beautiful luscious like us Valley. There are two other occasions close by later to see her and hire a palace both within relatively relatively easy walking distance. but as a sort of small and somewhat isolated achalasia, there are also new At the beginning of Paul’s, third missionary journey, they weren’t yet in existence. Then at some point in that period, the faithful fellow servant.
- 3:23
Epaphras returned to them, bringing good news and establishing the Ecclesia there. Basically, she was also somewhat divided because it was an occasion of significant wealth inequality. We had both slave owners and slaves as part of this Ecclesia. We had people who were incredibly wealthy by the day so it was known as sort of it was where all the Millionaire’s, ended up living of that day and strabo, the ancient geographer writes the country round blow to see if producers sheep. That are excellent.
- 4:09
Not only for the softness of their wall in which they surpass, even the Malaysian wall but also for its raven black color. So that the laodiceans derive Splendid revenue from it. As do all as do also, the neighboring polisseni. So the residents of colossae, so this was a place of great wealth, but it meant that you had the rich landowners and the slaves were actually did all the work out in the field and we know that we had both of these groups as members in the same enclosure together meeting in the same house. We also have a long established Jewish community in 2005 BC, Antiochus, the third sent 2,000 families of Jews into the region.
- 4:57
He said, because they were, they were cooperating at the time so he sent them there to calm the region down and said I’m going to set put you there and as a treat to you because I’m I’m sending you there and you’re doing this. Great favor for me. You can have your own laws.
- 5:10
So we’ve got this significant Jewish Community. Also, in the region who are used to having things their own way. Doing things according to their own traditions. And all of these people are coming together being pushed into this one smaller closure together. And we won’t have a consideration of the challenges that that led to and what they had to face in doing that.
- 5:33
So if we come to chapter 2, we see the reason why Paul wrote this letter. Chapter 2 verse 4. Paul writes, I say this in order that no one may delude you with plausible arguments. So, there is a need in this. Ecclesia to hold on to the truth. There were arguments coming in. There were there are ideologies and philosophies coming in that would have the possibility of leading this achalasia away from the truth.
- 6:11
And in verse 5, Paul gives us the tone that is going to go at this issue with he’d never met these brothers and sisters before. And so he makes sure that when he’s dealing with them he does it in a positive way. So he’s going to address these plausible arguments these enticing words what he’s going to do it.
- 6:32
Assuring them that he is not writing them off, he is there to work. Alongside them for the. I am absent in body yet. I’m with you in spirit rejoicing to see you all good order and the firmness of your faith in Christ. So that being the case, what were the issues that Paul had to deal with in this achalasia?
- 7:01
Well first of all, there was the early Gnostic movement. The gnostics were a group of people who had the idea that specific knowledge would be. What would save you that if you had access to a secret that would help you. And they, these ideas came out of what to the Romans was Eastern philosophy. So from the regions of Egypt and Persia, and they would have these Colts and that’s a look.
- 7:28
If you can find out the Bit of information, then maybe the Angels, maybe the other Spirit beings are going to help you and these ideas started coming into the Ecclesia. That old, maybe if we know a bit more, maybe if we know this set, special secret thing, then we’ll get extra help in our salvation.
- 7:48
And we see that idea really popping up in to verse 18. Let no one disqualify. You insisting on a cetus ISM and worship of angels, which was a key feature of the Gnostic movement and of going in details about Visions. The receiving of secret, special knowledge, and becoming puffed up without Reason by his sensuous mind.
- 8:13
And so the battle this idea Paul focuses their mind on just what they’ve received in Christ. And he sort of opens that in Chapter 2 is as he brings his argument against all the things that were going wrong in the colossian. Ecclesia, he starts off with an introduction to that that really emphasizes that they’ve got everything they need in Christ.
- 8:38
And so he seemed to verse 2, that their hearts may be encouraged being knit together in love to reach all the riches of the full Assurance of understanding and the knowledge of God’s mystery, which is Christ in, whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge and scene leading into this is saying, look the thing you need to know is Christ.
- 9:00
The thing you need to know is the gospel message. There’s not some extra secret thing that you’re going to get given just to you in a special vision. That’s not going to happen. That’s not going to help you. You can have the full Assurance of understanding in Christ, and In Christ Alone. Alongside these issues.
- 9:22
As I’ve said there’s also Jewish legalism the long-standing traditional traditional views of the Jewish community. In particular we they we have the there them saying there was a need to be circumcised and we see that in verse 11, We’re Christ where Paul says in him. Also, you are circumcised with the circumcision made without hands by putting off the body of Flesh by the circumcision of Christ.
- 9:58
And so saying you don’t need to worry about circumcision, you don’t need to worry about those things. And then down in verse 16 we have sort of a broader aspects of the law. Therefore let no one pass judgment on you in questions of food and drink or in God to a festival or a new moon or a Sabbath.
- 10:20
These are a shadow of things to come but the substance belongs to Christ. This is one that I found interesting when we consider. Because if you think about Romans 14, in Romans 14, Paul specifically says, if someone wants to keep a day, Let them keep it, they keeping it to God, don’t stop them from doing that. If someone wants to eat certain foods or not eat certain foods, let them, don’t let them go and do their thing. They’re doing that with the right answer. You, they’re doing it for their master. But the problem in the colossian a closure is people were bringing these things in and going right. You know, we’re going to hold a special effort and if you don’t turn up to the special effort, verse 8 and verse 16, therefore let no one pass judgment on you and verse 18. Let no one disqualify, you insisting on these things. So, we’ve got people in the Ecclesia going, right? I’m going to serve God this way, and if you don’t, you’re out. That was the attitude they had instead of going here is a thing that I find useful that, you know, a special effort, you know, there’s any number of things that we could think of that.
- 11:32
We find useful in building us up to the goal of establishing, shout establishing ourselves in our faith, in Christ. That we can’t disqualify people who go about a different way. And so that was the issue that was coming up here that that people are coming up with the things that they thought were useful. The things that they thought were helpful, I’m going nuts. If you don’t do things in the way that I think is useful and helpful.
- 11:56
You’re out the door. Goodbye. And also attached with this keeping of the law. We also have that there was seems to be at least some pride in a Jewish identity because over in chapter 3 verse 11 but we have to reiterate to them. That here there is not Greek and Jew circumcised and uncircumcised, Barbarian scythian, slave and free. But Christ is all and in all.
- 12:23
And so the people in these different groups might have gone all, you know, I’m a Jew. I’ve got, I’ve got this Heritage in the truth, obvious Heritage in understanding the Bible. I’m God, must be willing to work with me first before he works with you. Gentile uncircumcised brother.
- 12:41
And finally, the large other large group is asceticism. Or is the King. James has voluntary, humility? Most broadly sort of spoken of down in verse 23, where it says, they’re these have indeed an appearance of wisdom in promoting self-made, religion and a cetus ISM and severity to the body. But they are no value in stopping the Indulgence to the Flesh.
- 13:11
And this whole movement was was doing things that were hard in order. To praise God in there were thinking about it but the problem was is that became this great movement and as sort of As you move from this time into the early second century, they became what was the early monastic movement? The monks now out in the desert and people looked at them said, athletes have God that these persons, you know, sitting out under a rock in the middle of the desert, only eating bread and water and people going, isn’t he amazing? Okay.
- 13:46
No, he’s sitting out in the desert by himself. He’s doing nothing to strengthen the Ecclesia but people looked to people doing hard things to themselves and said oh isn’t this amazing? And this has, I think like a real impact on our side that we can see people. Doing difficult. Things are high. Isn’t that amazing? But if that difficult thing isn’t towards anything. If that difficult things not actually trying to achieve something and it’s just being difficult for the sake of being difficult.
- 14:16
It isn’t actually going to be doing anything instead that person by achieving that difficult thing that hasn’t actually achieved anything. The end of verse 23, they are of no value in stopping the Indulgence of the Flesh. And so they’re doing these difficult things, and people are going, isn’t that person? Wonderful. So all of these Different issues all there in this occasion.
- 14:39
We have the Aesthetics, we have the Jews, we have the circumcised, we have the uncircumcised, we have those who want to have, feast days and those who completely disregard that. And all of these people are trying to work out how they work together in the truth and how they become one body and this theme of one body runs throughout the book that they need to be one body.
- 15:06
I went through. with a yellow pencil and now Colossians is yellow because in there’s ninety five verses in Colossians and I found at least 40 different places where it speaks about us being in Christ with Christ through Christ and members of the one body that this idea, is that, that we’re not in this by ourselves. We’re in this Ecclesia in Christ, and that we are members of one body.
- 15:39
It just comes up Time and Time and Time Again. Take for example, do you have three verse 1? If then you have been, Raised with Christ seek those things are above where Christ is seated. At the right hand of God set your mind on things above, not the things of the Earth for you have died and your life is hidden with Christ, in God. When Christ, who is your life appears, then you will appear with him in glory.
- 16:02
That all that we need to be doing is Building Together. There is only one body for us to be a member of there is only one Christ. And so for this occasion that was a challenge that we can’t have the body going off in all different directions. Oceans. but, They’re the list of rules that they had come up with were not going to help because we see their into Verse 18. Let no one disqualify, you insisting on a CD season and worship of angels, going in details, about Visions. Puffed up without Reason by sensuous mind, and not holding fast to the Head from whom the whole body nourished and knit together through its joints and ligaments grows with a growth that is from God.
- 16:50
And so these External forces were only going to the only thing they would do. In the end of Verse 18 is Puff people up. There’s no substance to that but he says no grow together be knit together in one body and grow with a growth, a real growth in working together in helping and encouraging each other. And he then blades and that.
- 17:18
And so, the overall problem with these things is that it’s puffing up. And in, in the words of verse 23, it has no value in stopping the Indulgence of the Flesh. And that’s because all of these things that these people looked at were things that they could do. You can go and get your list of Sabbath days and you can happily Rock up to the upon the Ashley. It’s established a staying home, not going anywhere. Yeah.
- 17:44
You’re staying home. Every Sabbath day. You’re not doing. You’re not going to do that new. You can quite happily tick that off every Saturday for the whole year and feel very pleased with yourself. But well, all that does is leads to an attitude of self-reliance and the idea that you can do it all yourself.
- 18:06
And unfortunately this was typical of the region we don’t have time to turn it up. But in Revelation 3 verse 17 where Christ some 30 or 40 years later is writing to the laodicean, a closure the next closure over, he says to them, your problem is you think to yourself Girls, I’m rich.
- 18:27
I’ve got everything I need. I have need of nothing and that’s what these things in Chapter 2 would achieve in US is that if we build up this list of things, we go, here’s a nice easy things that we can do. And that the example that I think of is, is Lent for the Catholics and others is that people go over 40 days before Easter.
- 18:48
We’re not going to eat any chocolate, you know, great, well done, don’t eat chocolate for 40 days. You haven’t done anything to actually build up the Ecclesia. You’ve put this nice, easy Target in front of yourself and go on tick, done. It gold star for me an argument it says, no we’re not, in Christ, we’re not about that.
- 19:09
We’ve got time for this. Another example of where this was typical of the region. So Colossians, it seems was written about 62 to 64. There’s good reason for thinking that and in the year, 60, so only a couple of years prior there was a massive earthquake that hit this region. Knock down most of the buildings and the Roman governors turned up and said oh you know, Here’s the money.
- 19:33
We’re here to help if you need and the Colossians and the laodiceans turned around and said, don’t worry, we can rebuild our cities, we can pay for all of this ourselves. They were a successful, but self-confident region. It’s all of that would have had a great effect and seems that have come into the Ecclesia. So what then do we do?
- 19:56
Because it seems quite nice to go. Okay, we’ve got rid of all of the rules. We don’t need to worry about anything. That suits me quite fine. No one can tell me what to do. Well is that really what it’s all about? but we see if we come back to chapter 1, we have a bit of a problem when we considering these sorts of things, says that one verse 10. So as to walk in a manner, worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing to him bearing fruit in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God now that unfortunately, but it’s the reality, but doing good works and increasing in knowledge. Seems to be a lot about what the ascetics wanted, and what The gnostics Wanted, increasing your knowledge, right? We’re going to do that bit.
- 20:52
We’re really focusing on that bit and doing good works. We’re out there slaving away as an ascetic, really damaging ourselves for the benefit of the Ecclesia. And that these ideas, that these ideas that come up in Chapter 2. There’s a lot of overlap In what we in what the reality of those actions are but the important thing is the attitude behind them. And so Paul in chapter 3, then gives them a list of tasks both to not do and also to do the things to put off and the things to put on this is the life that he wanted to see from them. So see their 3 verse 5, put to death. Therefore what is Earthly?
- 21:40
In you sexual immorality impurity passion, evil, desire covetousness, which is idolatry on account of these things. The wrath of God is coming verse 8, but now you must put them all away anger wrath. Malice, slander obscene talk from your mouth do not lie to one. Another scene. That seems you’ve put off the old self with its practices. Now, for those who were saying donate these food and don’t attend these festivals or do attend these things and don’t do that nice and easy things to do.
- 22:11
But all of these things that were told to put off, there is only a hundred percent success rate or not. We either like it doesn’t say, you know, only be a little bit, angry, only speak poorly of a few of your brothers and sisters. Know, it’s a complete thing. That’s and it’s something that is in that way.
- 22:33
Essentially almost impossible for us to actually achieve that as we try and accomplish these things. We’re going to go, hang on. I was doing really good at not being angry. But the car in front of me pulling in front of me without indicating, and that’s suddenly I’m furious. He can’t hang on, no nice tick in the box for me this week, that that the the end goal.
- 22:58
Is almost impossible and in the same way down in verse 12 when he tells us what we do need to do. He says they’re put on then as God’s chosen ones holy and beloved compassionate, Hearts, kindness, humility, meekness and patience bearing with one another. And if anyone has a complaint against another forgiving one, another as the Lord has forgiven you.
- 23:20
So you also must forgive and we can go and do a kind thing. I mean and that’s a good thing to do but we haven’t there’s no tick in the Box for us because we haven’t finished kindness. They were at all. Yeah, every aspect of kindness. We have covered that off in our life.
- 23:38
But all of these things that we’ve, it now need to aim for in the things that we need to put off in the things that we need to put on. How do we maintain them motivation? And how do we stay focused on actually accomplishing? Those end goal things not serving in the means to the end, but working together towards the end in itself, working together towards the kingdom and bringing our brothers and sisters the one body there together.
- 24:07
And that really comes to us. I think in chapter 1, as Tim read it for us, it’s a truly spectacular chapter. I there sort of Colossians 1 and John one that really Elevate our thinking on who Christ was and what our relationship to him is of just how significant he was, what Christ is our what God has accomplished through him. So we see in one verse 11 that we are called and qualified in him.
- 24:43
May you be strengthened with all power according to his glorious might for all endurance and patience with joy. Giving thanks to the father who has qualified you to share in the inheritance of the Saints of life. He has delivered us from the domain of darkness and transferred us into the kingdom of his beloved Son.
- 24:59
In whom we have Redemption, the Forgiveness of sins. And I think this aspect of Christ we Wouldn’t think about. It’s Christ at the level, we can understand Christ. The one who has died for us and redeemed us and that we have forgiveness. We we understand all of that. but then, Paul really just Really goes for it but in just going you’d need to understand that this one body that you’ve been called to be a part of that.
- 25:33
Just how significant the head of that body is So he starts their verse 15, he is the image of the invisible. God, Hebrews 1 verse 3. Get the words right for turn. Their Hebrews 1 verse 3. Speaking, a similar way says he is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his nature and he upholds, the universe by the word of his power. So that croc in Christ.
- 26:06
We see exactly what God wanted to see in Genesis 1. Verse 6, in Genesis, 1 verse 26 where God said, let us make man in our image after our likeness He’s crossed. The one who is actually being made in that image. And it’s got the idea there in images of imprint has a has in Hebrews 10 and it’s a coin where you would have the stamp and then you’d have your nice plug of metal and you’d go and hit the flag of metal in the stamp into the plug of metal and then you would have the picture there.
- 26:41
And in Christ, we have the proof coin the one that is probably one that you look to know this coin is exactly what this coin is meant to be. But for all the rest of us the hammer came down on a bit of an angle and things are not quite lined up as they’re meant to be but in Christ, we see the perfect coin. He is the firstborn of all creation if we just jump forward to verse 18 He is the head of the body the Ecclesia. He is the beginning the firstborn from the dead. God’s purpose in creation wasn’t to create a dying breed of creatures but to create people who are going to live forever in his kingdom.
- 27:26
And so Christ is the first born the first one of that creation. And then this is section. So good from verse six times. He’s got the whole purpose of everything that God’s created from start to finish whether it’s the physical natural world around us, whether it’s Kings or rules, whether it’s the rise and fall of Nations. All of those things have been done for the purpose of what Christ was to accomplish.
- 27:55
Everything that’s happened in the world. Everything that’s lived and moved. We see therefore by him Him, all things were created in heaven and on Earth, visible and invisible, whether Thrones, or dominions or rulers or authorities. All things were created through him. And for him, he is before all things. And in him all things, hold together.
- 28:17
So Christ is the center point is the Hub of the rest of creation that that what he accomplished had to be done. And then, you know, the Greeks can come and go, the Romans can come and go this nation. An rise and fall when as it has their things visible and invisible things that we can’t even comprehend that to happen for Christ to be there.
- 28:40
And he’s the whole reason for it and he is the head of the body, the Ecclesia? that the one who is the head of this meeting is the central character and the central point in all the created world, He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead that in everything, he might be preeminent, he is right at the top.
- 29:13
For in him, all the fullness was pleased to dwell. Verse 19 is one that all the translators have a bit of a bit of difficulty with, and they all seem to want to add either the father, or God in there, somewhere, which in the Greek isn’t there. So, the sense of that, the King James that she has, has it quite.
- 29:35
Well, if you take out the father, That the it was pleasing that the fullness should dwell in him, is the sense of that verse and what does it mean by fullness? Well, it’s the completion and this pairs with Verse 18, where he is, the beginning, the firstborn from the dead. And the beginning, there is the Greek word.
- 30:04
RK, + RK in Greek thought is linked very closely with a were. They were much more familiar with logos. So logos is the plan and The RK is the power. Or the means, it’s the idea of the You’ve caused so, God had a plan logos and that plan was accomplished and brought about through Christ. So he is the beginning.
- 30:28
His the active Force that’s going to that’s going to bring all of this into being and in him that task was completed that task was fulfilled. Verse 20 and 3 him to reconcile to himself all things whether on Earth or in heaven Making Peace by the blood of his cross. That this perfect being this perfect, Son of God, Accomplished all of that Making Peace by the blood of his cross. And then we get to verse 21.
- 31:09
Verse 21, really packs a punch that in considering Christ at this supremum, exalted level, it says there and you who are alienated and hostile in mind doing evil Deeds. That’s where we are. He is Christ, the beginning, the firstborn, the exalted, the preeminent. And here’s us. Alienated hostile in mind doing evil Deeds. He says well, what amount of sabbath-keeping is going to get us out of that position of alienated hostile? Separated from God doing evil Deeds, but Christ the preeminent one has done all of that.
- 31:59
But then skipping forward to verse 24 for the sake of time. Paul once again takes it a whole step further. He says they’re now I rejoice in my suffering for your sake and in my flesh. I am filling up. What is lacking in Christ’s Affliction for the sake of his body. That is the Ecclesia.
- 32:27
The King James there has that what is behind in the sufferings of Christ? But it’s what is lacking in Christ’s afflictions that what Paul was accomplishing in his life was building up the Ecclesia and that when we consider our work that we do together in strengthening the occasion in preaching and teaching Sunday school and whatever it happens to be that what we’re doing is adding to the work that was done in the sacrifice of Christ.
- 32:55
God chose to feel this Earth with people who reflect his glory and his chosen us to be those people. And his chosen asked to find more people like that to actually go and build up the body. And I don’t think we’re going too far with that is if you just consider Romans 10 verse 14, it says there.
- 33:17
How then will they call on him in whom they have not believed and how they too believed on him of whom they have not heard and how they do here. Without someone preaching that that real work is given to us to do that, that Supreme exalted Messiah, who you can’t put him on any higher pedestal, understand who he is. And Paul says, and what we do in our work Is part of that exact same work.
- 33:44
It’s not just doing something nice and because we do something nice. God’s going to reward us as we work in the Ecclesia. We are actually building the body of Christ and how was Paul confident in this. If we come across to Paul’s own conversion. of the relationship of Christ to the body and our involvement in a Paul’s own conversion in Acts chapter 9. We have soul, as he was at that stage. You know, if you want to get the idea from Colossians 1, you who were alienated and hostile in mind doing evil Deeds? Well, I don’t think you can get any worse or any more hostile in mind than Saul.
- 34:31
But so breathing out threats and murder against the Disciples of the Lord. Went to the high priest and asked of him letters to the synagogue’s of Damascus. Said if he found anyone belonging to the way where the men are woman who might bring them bound. So saws there, he’s got all the vim and vigor in the world.
- 34:54
He’s going to go with murderous intent to hunt down Our brothers and sisters, that’s his intention. And the reason has to go all the way from Jerusalem. All the way out to Damascus is because he’s done such a good job of doing it in Jerusalem in Judea. He’s chased the Ecclesia out of that region.
- 35:16
Her bright light comes on him. and Christ says, So, so why are you persecuting me? Why are you doing this to me? So what were you trying to accomplish? Why are you doing this to me? This isn’t why you’re doing this to my disciples. Are you doing this to my brothers and sisters? Why are you doing this to me?
- 35:41
And Saul says, well who are you? Lord. And he said, I am Jesus. Whom you are persecuting Christ. Took Paul’s persecution of the Ecclesia. Absolutely. Personally, And Paul is them blinded and is led into the City. And it says there in verse 9 that he sits in this house for three days without sight. Not eating not drinking his just sitting there and thing that he’s got ring in his mind.
- 36:12
Is that one that I’ve been? I’ve been going about putting into prison capturing killing that man’s disciples. And now I’m stuck in this house. I can’t see a thing and he’s just said, go and sit in that house and I’m going to tell you what’s going to happen to you and still sits there.
- 36:30
