Welcome to Goodra selfie and talks. I’m Levi. And I’m Chris, and I’m Brian. Thank you for joining us this week. On this podcast, we select one taco week to help us get the Bible in our daily news feed. We post a new episode of the start of each week with a short intro before.
- 0:30
Hand to kind of set the stage for the talk. You’re about to listen to and now let’s talk more about this week’s talk. Hello and welcome back for this week. We’re listening to an excitation that was given by brother James Robinson. This past Christmas at the Verdugo Hills Looking at the birth of Jesus. Unlike this being the kind of prototypical, excitation for Christmas talking about the birth of Jesus, though, James does touch on sort of the discussion about when Jesus actually was born.
- 1:16
I found this to be a really interesting. Excitation one James always brings a ton of energy and excitement, which you can hear from the moment that he introduces his excitation, but he also has a really interesting way of looking at this subject. And kind of taking it at a different direction that I won’t mention more because I don’t want to spoil it but I found it to be a really interesting way of looking at the birth of Jesus and what that means both for the beginning of his life and then later on as there is different stages and what that means to us, this talk was a suggestion that was given to me, literally. As soon as brother James finished exhorting and meeting was over I’d somebody walk up and said this one definitely feels like One that should go in the podcast. So thank you for the suggestion.
- 2:04
And as always, thank you to everyone who sends in their suggestions, we greatly appreciate that. So with that, I will turn this over to brother, James Robinson for his extrication, entitled, The births of Jesus, good morning, brothers and sisters. I bring with me the love and greetings of your brothers and sisters at the San Francisco, Peninsula, khaleja, some of whom, I’m sure you know, very well, some of whom you may not have seen much Lately due to a certain pandemic that has been happening, but I’d like to let you all know that not only are we available on Zoom every Sunday, but starting in the New Year, we’re also going to be in person every Sunday at our Hall. So if you happen to be in the San Francisco Bay area on Sunday, please visit us, we’d love to see you. Anyway, as I’m sure you’re all very aware today happens to be the 25th of December.
- 2:53
So, Merry Christmas everyone and coincidentally, I thought today’s excitation might be a good time to talk about the birth of Jesus. And that’s why I asked our presiding brother to make sure that Luke chapter one was read this morning, my apologies to all of you. Who really wanted to hear Revelation perhaps talk to my dad. He knows a lot about Revelation to be happy to talk about it for hours but we’re going to be Talking a little bit more about Luke 1 and Jesus birth.
- 3:22
Now, some of you may be wondering, why would I want to talk about? Jesus birth on December 25th? The Bible doesn’t say Jesus was born on December 25th. In fact, it doesn’t say, wasn’t born on December 25th. Either, it never says, when he was born, which is kind of strange because there’s only really one day in Jesus life that we know quite well. And that day is not the day when Jesus died but the day it’s sorry, not the day when Jesus was born. But the day That he died, which happens to be the 14th of Nisan, which is really helpful.
- 3:58
If you know, when the 14th of Nisan is now, the problem is, is we don’t have a Nissan in our calendar because our calendar is not based on the moon. It’s based on the Sun, but the Jews who were keeping track of time at the time that Jesus died and used a lunar calendar, and Nissan is a lunar month.
- 4:21
And so figuring out when exactly the 14th of Nisan is which happens to be the date first day of Passover, which also happens to be the day of Good Friday. And Easter is something that we find in our solar calendar varies from year to year. So as I’m sure you all know Easter.
- 4:38
Sometimes happens in march, sometimes happens in April, you can’t really track it down, but it’s sometimes in the spring, that’s all because they’re trying to correspond the lunar calendar to a solar calendar, but if you’re clever, Or you can go. Well, there was only one 14th of Nisan, that Jesus actually died on.
- 4:56
So if we can figure out what the 14th of Nisan was on the Day on the year, when Jesus died, then we can figure out where in our solar calendar, corresponds to the lunar calendar, and figure out Jesus death date, at least. And if you’re very clever, and I’m not so clever. But I have read that some things by other people who put a lot more work into this.
- 5:15
Apparently, they all sort of conclude that the best evidence points to To it having been on April 3rd, 8033. But it turns out back in the 300s, they didn’t actually think you would died on April, 3rd 8333. They’re absolutely convinced he died on March 25th because March 25th was apparently the date of the creation of the world.
- 5:38
It was the date, Abraham, offered, Isaac, and a variety of other things, it’s right, close to the vernal equinox. That’s when the days stop and nights are the equal length. Anyway, so they really liked March 25th back in the 300s and since Jesus died On March 25th. And everyone also knew back in the 300s that you were conceived on the same day that you died.
- 6:02
Then Jesus must have been conceived on March 25th. And since they also knew back in the 300s that you were always born exactly nine months after you were conceived. That means if we count nine months from March 25th, we end up with December 25th, and that in case you’re wondering is as far as I can get the actual Why Jesus’s birthday is celebrated on December 25th? Because back in the 300s, they made a bunch of sort of leaps, of logic and got ended up with December 25th. So isn’t the only interesting leap of logic. There are making back in the 300s. That’s also when the doctrine of the Trinity came up, but just in case, you’re wondering, that is why December 25th is an important date in her calendar now, but regardless of whether Jesus died on March 25th or April 3rd or some other date and we’re Carlos of whether he was conceived on the same day that he died for some reason, we do know that nine months before Jesus was born, something miraculous did happen, and that’s what we read about in Luke chapter 1. We don’t maybe know exactly when it happened. But we do know that something miraculous happened and it’s something that actually confused me for a long time because on Usually January for well and do we read Luke chapter 1, whenever we read Luke chapter 1 in our daily readings planner, I would be reading along and then we get to this part where Jesus where Mary asked a very important question. The angel comes along and he tells her that verse 31 here. Behold, you will conceive in
- 7:38
your womb and bear a son and you shall call his name, Jesus, and then Mary goes, um, wait a second verse 34. How will this be? Since I am a virgin seems like a fairly reasonable. No question to ask and by the way, if anyone ever tells you don’t question God Mary here is questioning what God is doing and it works out well for her.
- 7:58
It’s okay to ask questions once say that there’s no such thing as a stupid question. But this was a good question. She was asking, how is this going to work? And then the angel responds and gives an answer verse 35 and the angel answered her. The holy spirit will come upon you and the power of the most high will overshadow you.
- 8:17
Therefore, the child to be born will be called Called. Holy the son of God. And I will admit, when I was a kid, I read this and I was really disappointed. I wanted details and all I get is this stuff about the Holy Spirit. Overshadowing her, what does that even mean? How is that produce a child seemed like? This was part of the whole conspiracy. Not to give enough details about how babies were made, which I had already noticed at that time period. Anyway, the other thing that’s sort of bothered me here, was that It says he’s going to behold the Son of God but it’s the holy spirit that overshadows her, shouldn’t that mean that he’s called like the son of the Holy Spirit, what’s going on here?
- 9:03
What’s this connection between the Holy Spirit and God, how does this work? Why do we get what seems to be a rather vague explanation of what’s going on? Those were the sort of thoughts I’ve been thinking about for a number of years, and fortunately, I have found when you sort of have something stuck in the back of your head and you’re thinking about it, thinking about it, thinking about, Bout it. Sometimes you come up with better answers over time and that’s one of the things I’d like to share with you this morning because I do think that the angel gives a good answer when you understand the language that he’s using the things he’s talking about and the key to understanding this I think is understanding what the holy spirit is. Which I’ll be honest, is something that has been confusing Christians for thousands of years. So let’s talk about the Holy Spirit. In some ways, it should be obvious from the name. It’s Holy Spirit and you probably already know what holy means.
- 10:00
It means separate different. The Holy Bible is a separate book. When God calls us to be holy, he calls us to be different from everyone else, special peculiar maybe, so that’s wholly. If it’s wholly, it stands out from the crowd. So clearly a holy spirit is a spirit. That’s different from all the other Spirits as a spirit that stands out from the crowd, but then we get to the harder part. What is this spirit?
- 10:28
And that one might be something that you didn’t get such a great answer on in Sunday school. I know, I didn’t. So sometimes you can turn to other things like a dictionary. So if you look up in Merriam Webster’s Dictionary, what a spirited, you’ll find one of the definitions is that it is a usually volatile organic solvents such as an alcohol.
- 10:47
S Stir or hydrocarbon which may or may not be helpful but I actually do find it as helpful because if you think of a spirit as an alcoholic beverage, which you may have heard of before, the reason we call things like whiskey or vodka or things like that Spirits. Is because when people drink these things, it’s like some different thing has entered into them. I’m not sure if you’ve had the sort of unfortunate privilege of seeing someone who is very drunk but they behave differently. It’s like something has caused them to even though they might look about the same, their face might get a little bit red, but the things that come out of their mouth or not quite the same sort of things, the way their body behaves might be a little awkward and you can often smell something very strong coming off their breath.
- 11:44
And this is why we call certain drinks Spirits, because when you drink them it’s like you have taken this other sort of thing into you that started controlling you and made you act differently. And that is the essence of what a spirit is. A spirit is something that changes the way you behave. It’s not something you can necessarily see take but it’s in your body and it changes.
- 12:09
The what you do, there are a number of places in the Bible that talk about Unclean, spirits. And when we read about these unclean spirits that are in people, they cause symptoms, like, say causing people to lose control over their bodily functions and fall over randomly something that we might call now, say epilepsy, or these unclean spirits would cause people to vary between times of extreme activity and extreme lethargy.
- 12:33
Something we might Now call bipolar disorder or sometimes these unclean spirits would be in someone and it would be like there were multiple beings inside them and they would talk to them. The person would talk with one voice or another, something that nowadays we might call multiple personality disorder. And they didn’t really know how to describe these things where someone seemed to have the same body. But something weird was going on about the way that body was behaving.
- 13:00
And so they would describe it as a spirit. That there is some sort of external body, less Force, maybe that had come along and inhabited this person, maybe after they had managed to hit their head, very hard. And so you You have this concept of spirit and it’s a little bit difficult to understand. Because what you’re actually seeing here is difficult to understand and I just wish back then that they’d had the concept of computers.
- 13:25
Because as a computer engineer, I happen to think there is a much better analogy for how a spirit works. As you see with the computer, you have the hardware, which is like your actual box or maybe your motherboard and your computer chip on it and then you have the software that runs on it. And computer software is not something that’s terribly visible.
- 13:47
But you put it into that hardware and all of a sudden it starts doing something. And with computer software, as I’m sure you’ve all noticed you might have multiple pieces of software running at the same time and you’re kind of annoyed that this one is popping up. All your trying to use the other one and you have this one operating system.
- 14:02
That’s working to try and control these pieces software and make sure this one stays in place. And this one works at the same time as this one. And this one’s only allows us to use the CPU for this amount of time and is controlling all these things. Yes. And I think this is actually a decent explanation for the sort of concept that they’re trying to get across with spirit in the Bible.
- 14:21
Spirit is sort of like software, running on a person’s body. And so you have one sort of spirit working in them and it’s telling you to do this. And another spirit is telling you to do that in the person’s operating system, the being that they are sort of controlling it and making sure that everything stays in place and we know that with a computer it’s important in To all the right software on it, you get a new computer, you go and install Chrome, you try to make Edge, stop popping up, you get rid of that, antivirus, that came with it for free.
- 14:53
That actually is not free and trying to make you get this expensive subscription. You have to make sure you have the right software on your computer and back in the day, this meant, you know, pulling out the floppy disks or the CDs now, you just downloaded off the internet, but it’s the same idea. We want to make sure we have the right software running on our computer.
- 15:13
So, Runs properly. And that’s actually a fairly good analogy for what happens when parents are raising their children. They’re trying to put the right spirit wear into their kids, so that that kid kicks in the right way in Acts in the right way and it might be rather difficult to install the please and thank-you functionality, take quite a bit of effort, some of these things come.
- 15:37
You might have some preloads on the device that aren’t things, you quite want and kind of have to be uninstalled as best. Can but the same thing sort of goes with human beings. We’ve got these multiple sort of things pushing us in one direction or another and we’re trying to keep them under control and it would be a lot easier.
- 15:57
If like in sort of the Matrix movies, you just plug something in and download all the good functionality and all of a sudden, your kid is a prodigy and can speak many languages and do karate moves, but it doesn’t work that way. Instead installing spirit wear on human beings tends to take a lot. A lot of practice effort and words. And as I’m sure you all know words are powerful. Things Words Can Build You Up.
- 16:24
Words can break you down. Start a fire in your heart or put it out. And all those things could be described in the same way. They use spirits. Of course, words can build up your spirit or break your spirit or revive your spirit, or take away your spirit. When you hear words, it changes the way you think and act.
- 16:41
And so the way we tend to install things on our Owen, Hardware. Here, is we listen to words and you might have somebody teach you things through words and you can hear them and that changes the way you think. And that’s why as we as christadelphians make, such a big deal about reading the Bible, God’s word coming here on Sunday, so we can listen to God’s word because we want to install into ourselves. Software spirit wear something that helps us to do Godly things rather than just what’s already pre-installed on our Hardware to kind of just be selfish and do our own thing or perhaps listen to some of the prideful apps that the world wants you to install all the time.
- 17:26
And so thank you for coming and listening to God’s word this morning. We’re making sure that we all are software running properly. Now, again, I’m a computer engineer, sorry for this getting quite geeky, but I’d wanted to Just mention that it’s also kind of cool that computers all run on Words as well and not just been programming languages which are all written in words. But if you’ve ever heard like 8-bit computer or 64-bit computer, that’s because that, that bit thing is called the word size.
- 17:55
And every time a computer reads, something, it reads A word after word, after word 64-bit computers read longer words at a time, but everything runs on Words and I think this is important not just for the geeky computer analogy, but also, As the Holy Spirit tends to come through words. This way that the Holy Spirit seems to work is it comes into people and it changes say the way they act the way they think, the what they can do and if we have a holy spirit then it activates the body to do things. It wouldn’t normally, or couldn’t normally. Do we some of the most obvious examples of this are the Holy Spirit.
- 18:37
Would come on someone and then they could predict the future. You Not normally do that. And so clearly, this is a different spirit that has come on. Someone and is causing the words that come out of their mouth to be something that wouldn’t normally come from. Just what you might hear from your parents or what you might determine on your own. This is a holy spirit.
- 18:55
This is a special piece of software that is unlocking capabilities. You wouldn’t normally expect from the hardware. And in Mary’s case, what we have here is the holy spirit comes on her and she’s able to have a child. Even though she Hasn’t gotten married yet. Normally, you need a husband, but the Holy Spirit has come upon her.
- 19:15
This has activated Mary in such a way that. Well, the child to be born will be called, holy the Son of God. And that actually does make sense. That’s the way God’s spirit works. It comes into people, and it changes the way they acted changes what is possible with their bodies. But it’s probably worth noting that while Jesus Christ was born by the power of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit actually came on Mary, it didn’t come on. Jesus at this time, we know that Jesus did not have the Holy Spirit from the womb because we know when Jesus got the Holy Spirit and it wasn’t until 30 years later and Luke chapter 3 verse 21.
- 19:53
We find out when Jesus gets the Holy Spirit. Luke 3 verse 21 just a few verses over. Luke 3 verse 21. Now, all the people were baptized and when Jesus also had been baptized and was praying, the heavens were opened and the Holy Spirit. Descended on him in bodily form. Like a dove and a voice Came From Heaven. You are my beloved Son with you.
- 20:16
I am. Well pleased. And I think that’s an interesting concept to note about the birth of Jesus. Jesus was born through the power of the Holy Spirit, but that was the power working on his mother Mary. And what made Jesus, who he was, was not having necessarily the whole Spirit inside him. At that point, that didn’t come later.
- 20:35
It was the Holy Spirit, working on him, through the people around him through his mother and I’m sure through his father and I’m sure through the people around him helping to mold Jesus into who he was. We know, Jesus was not quite normal. Before this point, we have a fun little incident where he at 12 years old is in the temple.
- 20:56
Listening to the rabbi’s asking them questions and sort of managing to survive on his own for three. Days while his parents run off, thinking that everything was fine and then hurry on back, because how can a 12 year old be okay in Jerusalem and somehow, Jesus is not even worried, didn’t, you know, I’d be in my father’s house.
- 21:13
So he wasn’t quite what we would expect from a normal boy at that point, but it wasn’t the holy spirit inside him, that was doing that. That would come later, clearly. It was the Holy Spirit that had worked on him working through other people. And I think this is important to realize about the Holy Spirit, the holy spirit is not Earlier mind control thing that comes into people and makes them just do what the Holy Spirit wants. It’s a spirit among other spirits and the operating system of person has to figure out where to allocate and how to control it, we get a very sort of clear. Example, this in First Corinthians 14, where Paul is talking about how you had to have different people in their Ecclesia prophesy and he’s like, no, no don’t all talk at the same time.
- 21:58
It says in First Corinthians 14, starting at verse 30. If a revelation is made to another sitting there, let the first be silent for you can all prophesy one by one. So that all may learn and be encouraged and the spirits of the prophets are subject to prophets. For God is not a god of confusion, but of peace.
- 22:14
And so he’s saying, yes, you the Holy Spirit might be coming on you. And you might be prophesying but you know, you you are in control of your own body, you can wait and let them finish before you start talking, do you think is important to realize? Holy spirit is Is clearly something like a piece of software that is running, but you can still control alt delete an end processor.
- 22:37
Make it wait a little bit for the next one to come on. It was still under the control of the person who is in the body. What made Jesus Jesus up to the point up to the point. When he gained the Holy Spirit, was the action of the Holy Spirit on those around him and not within him and it wasn’t until he was born a second time, because of course, that’s what baptism is.
- 22:56
It’s also a birth that he received the Holy Spirit himself. And, unfortunately, we don’t know the date. When Jesus was born that time, either learning the Jesus was not just born once, this was a second birth, and we don’t know the date for that either. It probably wasn’t December 25th though, unless they were having weather like we’re having on December 25th, but we’ve already talked about two times when Jesus was born, there’s actually a third time when Jesus was born as well, and we do have the date for that one. At least because we know when Jesus died. Remember the 14th of Nisan.
- 23:33
So if we know when Jesus died, then we know three days later he rose from the dead. And that’s an example of a birth as well. A birth not from his mother or a birth from the water baptism, but a birth into eternal life. And so that must have happened on the 17th of Nissan, which according to our best experts would be April.
- 23:52
So April 6th, a t-33 And so that actually is in some ways the most important of Jesus births because that was the one where he was glorified. That was the one where all of the expectation of what Jesus was going to do was finally fulfilled. And so this morning when I said I wanted to talk about Jesus’s birth, I actually meant I wanted to talk about Jesus’s births because he had three of them and I think it’s important not just because it’s kind of cool that Jesus was born and it is cool. That woman was able to have a baby Be without up man. Involved that the Holy Spirit would descend on him like a dove when he was baptized that he rose from the dead but God doesn’t just do things because they’re cool. He does lots of cool things but not just because they’re cool as he demonstrated quite dramatically to Elijah on Mount Sinai.
- 24:41
God’s not, just about doing impressive acts of power, he’s about changing human beings. Revealing himself through words words that download his Spirit into human beings and not just Not one human being but many human beings because Jesus is the son of God, but he’s not the only son of God. He’s the only son of God who was born of a virgin, but he’s, the firstborn among many brothers and sisters.
- 25:11
As Paul says, in Romans 8 verse 29, Those whom he foreknew. He also predestined to be conformed, to the image of his son, that his son would be, the firstborn among many brothers and sisters. God, always intended from the very beginning that Jesus. Earth would not be a singularity. It would be a template, it would be something that other people could follow.
- 25:33
Jesus was born by the power of the Holy Spirit, working on his mother, causing her body to produce something. Miraculous something from God that something that couldn’t exist, otherwise. But that’s a template for us as well. We too have been born again by the action of the Holy Spirit of on other people, we have been born again because we have heard the word of God, produced by the Holy Spirit from people around us, some of them many years ago, some of them that we know quite personally and that has come into us and has changed us as made us start acting in a way.
- 26:10
That is not just the way we are naturally programmed to do. Do but instead in a way that is Godly that is different. That is Holy the word of God has come and that has changed us to become sons of God. The same way the Holy Spirit came and made Jesus. A Son of God.
- 26:30
And the interesting thing about that of course is that’s before we were baptized. If we hadn’t already been changed, if the Holy Spirit hadn’t been working on us at those words hadn’t been downloaded into us, we Wanted to be baptized in the first place, like Jesus Christ. We were born again of water as a result of what the spirit had already been doing to us. And it’s because we had been changed from living a self-focused life to a god, Focus life that we had decided to get baptized in the first place. Because why, of course, we is that Crystal fiends dont baptize babies because that gets the order wrong. Like, we see with Jesus Christ.
- 27:07
You get born from water as a result of being born from the spirit. Not the other way around. Unless God, God’s spirit has caused you to be born again. You just get wet, but if you’ve been born of the spirit, then being born of water, takes the spirit from something that’s acting on the outside of you changing, you and doing Son of God, and is now something that is acting inside of you flowing, out of you. As we read in John 7, verses 37 to 39 on the last day of the feast, the great day.
- 27:38
Jesus stood up and cried out. If anyone thirsts let him come to me and drink Believes In Me, as the scripture has said, out of his heart will flow, rivers of Living Water. Now, this he said about the spirit whom those who believed in him were to receive And that’s why when you get baptized, you get put on the speaking list as to take more leadership roles serve the occlusion various ways because now that you have been baptized now that the holy spirit is not just working on you, but in you now that things are flowing out of you that are God’s words. We want to encourage that we want you to start getting that Holy thing, you more CPU and RAM and memory, getting more words out on the communications channels because we want to Encourage God’s spirit within you. That’s why you get more duties, if more work, but it’s good for you and this is all.
- 28:34
So now you may be wondering, why are we not like the Pentecostals who believe that when you get baptized every one lays their hands on you and all of a sudden you start speaking in tongues and it seems based on our experience. God could do that but God doesn’t seem to do that when people get baptized the nowadays.
- 28:53
He did. Do that back in the first century. But nowadays, the fruit of the spirit that we tend to see in people are nonetheless the work of the Holy Spirit but they’re the ones that Paul talks about. In Galatians 5 you probably all learned in Sunday school love joy, peace patience, kindness goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. These are the fruits of the spirit that we see working in people after they get baptized and it kind of makes sense. If you think about it, say you’re a parent. Would you prefer to make your child instantaneously have anything that you want it would You prefer to sort of put in them, The Willpower to study a new language every day up until the point where they become fluent and which is certainly something we have seen with a number of christadelphians who have been encouraged by the mission field and have learned a new language or christadelphians who have gone into the medical field so that they can learn to heal people. God doesn’t seem to give so many of the instantaneous gifts, but we do see his holy spirit working in people changing who they are and the fruits of the spirit flowing out of them. As after they are baptized, after they start producing The Living Waters inside themselves, just like Jesus said, and in. So doing what we’re doing is following the example of our older brother, Jesus Christ.
- 30:08
The firstborn among many brothers. And of course, that’s again. Why we’re gathered together this morning to remember. Jesus is birth, and Jesus is death. There’s a lot of people out there who only really remember Jesus birth once a year on say, December 25th. Remember his death once a year on say the 14th of Nisan, wherever that may fall and March or April, but we as christadelphians, we come together every Sunday and we eat a piece of bread, and we drink a little bit of wine. And we remember Jesus.
- 30:39
We remember how in obedience and love, he died on the cross. And how three days later he was born again to eternal life. Every Sunday we get to remember Jesus, death and Jesus’s birth. And so I wanted to talk about Jesus’s birth to this morning but to be Must we talk about Jesus’s birth, basically, every Sunday. And of course, we’re not just thinking few good thing that that will happen to him, but that’s not something to me. Obviously, the reason why we remember Jesus birth every Sunday is because we want to follow in his example, because Jesus was born again to eternal life and I want to be born the same way.
- 31:17
He was, I want to live the same way he lives, and if that requires dying the same way he did, well, then sign me up because Because if you follow in someone else’s footsteps, you’re going to end up where they are going. And if I want to end up where Jesus is, I need to follow him.
