Welcome to Goodra selfie and talks. I’m Levi. And I’m Chris, and I’m Brian. Thank you for joining us this week. On this podcast, we select one taco week to help us get the Bible in our daily news feed. We post a new episode of the start of each week with a short intro before.
- 0:30
Hand to kind of set the stage for the talk. You’re about to listen to. And now let’s talk more about this week’s talk. Hello and welcome to another talk this week. We’re listening to an excitation that was given by brother Nathan. Louis at the Christchurch North Ecclesia. In New Zealand a couple weeks ago The specific excitation was actually recommended by multiple brothers and sisters.
- 1:05
I think we got three or four dreckman dacians over the past week or so, recommending this excitation, which was titled living without fear. And for a little context in New Zealand, where brother Nathan is giving this excitation, they are the countries coming out of over 100 days of being in a lockdown. After the covid has hit their Nation.
- 1:25
I won’t pretend to know a lot of details about what’s going On there and all the context around it, but there is a lot of fear and uncertainty about what’s going on there. As is very common throughout the rest of the world. So this is definitely something I felt was applicable to everybody and brother, Nathan does a really good job of outlining. What can make us uncertain and how to handle that fear. And I won’t go into more detail than that without stealing, some of his closing points.
- 1:56
But I just found to be an excellent expectation of really good, reminder of Her our mindset should be when dealing with things that can cause us to be afraid. And a good reminder of what we need to focus on and how we need to handle. All the fear and doubt and uncertainty that the news and the world tends to throw out at us and can seep into our mind, if we’re not being careful.
- 2:19
So to the brothers and sisters that recommended this. Excitation. Thank you so much. It’s an excellent one. It was great to hear brother, Nathan. Give this excitation I remember when he and Susanna were out here in California so it was nice to hear from him again. So with that, as always, please continue to send in those recommendations.
- 2:40
If you hear one that you think is spectacular, make sure to send it along, if it’s on YouTube, it’s okay. We have ways to pull it down and convert it. So we get just the audio but please send those in. So with that, I’m going to turn it over to brother. Nathan, Louis for his excitation living without fear.
- 2:57
Well, as we all know, we are living in covid saturated times. And all of us are dealing with all of the things which are occupying. Our minds day-by-day masks, vaccines and vaccine, passports and mandates. And I don’t know that you brothers and sisters, but I feel like in my head, there is a lot of extraneous noise, unnecessary noise noise, which distracts from the things which are truly important. In all of that noise, that comes with this covid, saturated time, in which we live brings with it, fear, and fear comes in many different forms.
- 3:43
We might have fear of covid itself of catching covid. We might have fear of of the vaccine. We might have fear of unvaccinated people. We might have fear of our job security or having enough money to pay the mortgage. We might have fear of losing a loved one. We may have fear of wearing a mask. We may have fear of not wearing a mask, we may have fear of what other people will think, if I do wear a mask or I don’t wear a mask or a, get the vaccine or I don’t get the vaccine, we might have fear of what the vaccine might do to our ability to have. Children or our ability for our children to have children. We might have fear of long covid, fear of the long-term side effects of the vaccine, which none of us know we may have fear of restrictions Of not being able to travel to see family overseas, or to have family visit. Losing a job, fear of isolation.
- 4:52
Segregation is seems like we’re heading towards a bipartite society. Maybe we have a fear of loss of freedoms, maybe we have fear for the mental health of ourselves, or our family, we have fear of grandparents, or our parents health. We may fear for the unity of the occasion in difficult times, and the danger of division amongst ourselves over these issues, is a lot of fear and all of us are feeling these feelings or some of them, none of us are exempt.
- 5:30
All of us are struggling with fear. It seems on every side, it’s the common denominator that all of us us have the things that we don’t know. Things that we can’t see and the things that we can’t control. Inevitably generate in us a feeling of fear. Now, I think it’s very important to say at the outset that fear is a god-given Instinct. It’s not a bad thing to be cautious. Fear is the way that God has enabled us to have instincts that preserve our life many times. Times.
- 6:13
But sometimes in our lives Fear Can dominate. It can be too noisy, it can paralyze Our Lives, it can dominate our thinking. And so this morning’s exaltation is around the idea of living without fear. When I was thinking about our situation and this topic living in a world where we are surrounded by fears anxiety, some of them. You might argue induced by the government. We fear is everywhere everywhere. We look, it made me think of one. Bible word, one Bible word and it may not be the Bible word that you thought of.
- 7:00
But it was this Bible word made War. Miss abib seeing from some of your faces that was not the word you were thinking of but I would like to share with you the story of magel mr. Beebe this morning. If you’d like to come to Jeremiah chapter 20. This is where the name may go, mr.
- 7:25
Beebe occurs in the scriptures. Jeremiah chapter 20 in Reading from verse 1. Now pressure the son of a murdered. The priest who was also chief governor in the house of Yahweh heard that Jeremiah prophesied. These things, the impetuous smoked during Maya the prophet and put them in the stocks that were in the Highgate of Benjamin which was by the house of Yahweh and it came to pass on the morrow that pressure brought forth during my out of the stocks, then saved Dura Maya and to him.
- 8:05
Yahweh It has not called thy name, pesher, but may go mr. Bob. Now you can look in your margin and you’ll find that make or miss a bib means fear. It, says round about, it really means fear on every side and it’s there the same exactly the same expression make or Miss Abbott is translated the same word is translated in the English in verse 10. For I heard the defaming of mini fear on every side and so pesher.
- 8:44
Going to be renamed to represent the feelings of the nation. It Was Fear everywhere. Actually, this little phrase may go mr. The fear on every side was the watch Cry of Durham eyes times it occurs five times in the book of Jeremiah. Why was everybody so afraid? And the answer is because of of the Babylonians.
- 9:16
Now if you hold your hand in Jeremiah chapter 20, and come back to the first instance of this phrase in Jeremiah out of the five times. We have these words in Jeremiah chapter 6, This is why there was fear on every side Jeremiah chapter 6 and verse 22. Thus saith Yahweh Behold, a people Cometh From the North country and a great nation should be raised from the sides of the earth.
- 9:51
They shall lay hold on bow and spear they are cruel and have no mercy. There voice Roar. If like the sea They Ride upon horses, sit an array. As Min for war against thee, o Daughter of Zion. We have heard the famed are of A Hen’s wax. Feeble anguish have taken hold of us in pain.
- 10:16
There’s a woman in travail. Go not forth into the field and walked by the way, for the sword of the enemy and fear is on every side. It was going to become the watch Cry of Jeremiah’s times and we all know what the Babylonians were like. They were a fearsome in a warlike. People may swept into the land from the north, they lay the whole land destitute and Barren in their wake, we’ve just read in Joel in the Book of Joel in the last couple of days. The story of the Babylonian sweeping into the land of Israel like locusts and you remember in Joel chapter 2, If you read joke to it says that before them, the land was like the Garden of Eden behind, it was like a Wilderness. These people just decimated everything and the Babylonians were going to encircle Jerusalem. It was a terrifying, Prospect.
- 11:16
Everybody knew that you are either going to be dead or a slave. It’s hard to imagine. Isn’t it hard to imagine? It’s definitely worse than Covid a lot worse. The Babylonians. Now the other places if you’d like to take a note of this little phrase, which we won’t turn up but it’s Jeremiah 46.
- 11:39
And verse 5 where Egypt is told Nebuchadnezzar is coming and fear will be on every side during Maya 49 and verses 28 to 29 where Jeremiah tells Kedah Nebuchadnezzar is coming. There’s going to be Fear on every side. This is the watch Cry of Jeremiah’s times Meg or mr. Beebe. It was how everyone was healing.
- 12:08
Literally, it means encircled by fear, the Babylonians were outside the walls of the city there was nowhere to turn. There’s nowhere to run. It was nowhere to hide, it was no way forwards. No Way backwards. No. No way out. Everybody was living in fear with fear, and by fear, fear was on every side. So how do we live without fear in these kinds of circumstances? Well, come back to Jeremiah chapter 20 because Jeremiah has the answer to this question.
- 12:55
Jeremiah chapter 20 and verse 10. We just read this before, but let’s just read this again for. I heard the defaming of Minnie. May go mr. Beebe fear on every side now. Did you know that? Actually and I think it is in the margin It is in the margin. That’s start of verse 10 is a quotation for direct quotation from some 31, a, some of David’s.
- 13:31
So, let’s go there because Jeremiah is deliberately quoting some 31 if we make it to Sam 31, let’s just read verse 13 to give it Sam, 31, and verse 13. I have heard the slander of mini during Maya scene. For I have heard. I heard the defaming of mini verse 13. Fear was on every side while they took counsel together against me, they devised to take away my life.
- 14:13
So, Jeremiah chapter 20 and verse 10 is a direct quotation of well, actually, I’m 31 is the only other occurrence in the whole of the scriptures of this phrase made Wilma suburb outside of Jeremiah’s writings. So, Jeremiah is going to quote, David’s experiences. When he had fear on every side. What was the background to Psalm 31?
- 14:44
And the answer is, it was the times of first of Samuel chapter 23 we won’t go back there, but you We’ll remember, it was a very difficult time for David. He was on the run from Saul, he was hunted like a flea. He was living in caves having to provide for hundreds of other men, food shelter, security, everything was on his shoulders. He was so stressed that he ran naively to the Philistines, too sick for some degree of comfort, and he almost lost his life in gath.
- 15:19
You remember, when he scrambled at the gates and pretended to Mad and dribbled and only just escaped with his life, you’ve got out of gas. He went to Keela sole pursuit of tequila. He just managed to escape. He went to distances if and the zip fights delivered him into the hand of Saul. He’s betrayed by doing the Edomite swords back on his tail. He’s almost captured by Saul ran one side of the, of the hill and saw goes around the other side of the Hill. It was extremely stressful for David. He lived the words of verse 13, fear was on every side. Well, they took counsel together against me, they devised to take away my life, whether it was Saul, all the Philistines or do egg or the Z fights, everybody was against it. So Jeremiah quotes Psalm 31, because David knew what it was like to experience magel, Miss Even fear on every side and we’re going to get to our main point of exultation little bit later.
- 16:24
But I feel, this is a great big siltation in this for us that is that this feeling of fear on every side is not new. It’s not unique to us. This is a common experience of the Saints and probably, if we’re really honest their fears and their anxieties and the threat to their life was a lot more tangible and real and visceral even than ours and we can take comfort from this. The scriptures have talked about these things. Other Saints have experienced this fear on every side. We are not alone.
- 17:05
How does Jeremiah take strength from draw inspiration from find answers from some 31? Well, we know that even though this was David’s experience and it’s David Psalm, the sun is really all about Messiah. We know that because verse 5 is in the lips and mouth of our Lord Jesus Christ. Into thine hand. I commit my spirit.
- 17:39
This is clearly a Messianic psalm. Sucrose felt fear on every side. He felt magel mr. Bird, he was tempted in all points like as we are, he felt these feelings, but what was his response? Let’s just read some of the psalm by way of illustration verse 1 in the. Oh yeah way. Do I put my trust? Let me never be ashamed.
- 18:14
Deliver me in thy righteousness, verse 5 into thine hand. I commit my spirit thou Hast redeemed Me, O Lord, God of truth, I have hated them that regard line vanities, but I trust in the Lord, I will be glad and rejoice in thy mercy for now has considered my trouble. That has known my soul in adversities and has not shut me up into the hand of the enemy. There has set my feet in the last Drew have mercy upon me o. Yahweh for I am in trouble.
- 18:50
My eye is consumed with grief in my soul, in my belly for my life is spent with grief in my years, with sighing, my strength faileth because of mine iniquity in my bones are consumed. I was a reproach among all mine enemies, but especially among my neighbors in a fear to mine acquaintance.
- 19:12
They that did see me without fled from me. I’m forgotten as a dead man, man, out of mind. I’m like a broken vessel but I have heard the slander of many fear was on every side. While they took counsel together against me, they devised to take away my life, but I trusted in thee o Yahweh, I seen there at my God, my times are in thy hand deliver me from the hand of mine enemies in from them that persecute me. The overwhelming theme of The Psalm is verse 1. Trust in God, verse 5 committing his life into his father’s. Trust the sex trust in God, verse 14, trust in God. Verse 15, putting his life into his father’s hands verse 19. Trust in God, verse 23 have faith in God verse 24, have hope in God, so David’s Answer Messiahs answer to make or Miss above fear on every side.
- 20:21
Was that Yahweh was also on every side how we feel is that we are surrounded encircled by fear, but Messiahs answer is that we are actually surrounded by Yahweh. David had no idea why he was being hunted and persecuted like a flea in the wilderness. He didn’t didn’t know what his future held. But when fear, when fear encircled, his heart, he fell back on the one thing that he knew for sure. And that is that God had anointed him to be king whatever was happening.
- 21:08
Was extraneous noise to the fact that God had anointed him King and he needed to just quietly. Wait. Messiah had many moments of real struggle before the Garden of Gethsemane, but he always fell back on the one thing that he knew, and that was his father’s love, and his father’s mission. In all he had to do despite all the extraneous noise.
- 21:41
Crucify him Was to quietly. Wait interests. Now we know that this was Messiahs attitude to being surrounded by fear because Jeremiah is also going to give us an insight into messiah’s mind. If some 31 is an insight into Messiahs mind then, so is Lamentations chapter 3 and I’d like you to come to Lamentations because We mentioned the five times in Jeremiah with a phrase Meg or mr. Beebe occurs.
- 22:27
And we’ve been to some 31, where Jeremiah’s quoting is only one other place in the scriptures where this phrase occurs and it’s in the last verse of Lamentations chapter 2,
- 22:40
Lamentations to. Also, of course, by the pin of Jeremiah thou has called as in a solemn day magel misterben, my Terrors roundabout. So that in the day of yahweh’s anger, none Escape nor remained those that I have swaddled and brought up half my enemy consumed. This is how the nation felt fear on every side and the Princes of the nation in Lamentations to are going to be articulated.
- 23:17
By the man of chapter 3 in verse 1. I am the man that has seen Affliction by the rod of his wrath and the words of Lamentations three are really the words of Messiah just as some 31 was written by David but we’re really the words and experiences and thoughts of Messiah Lamentations 3 is in the first instance, the anguish and affliction of his so loved. Or my butt in the ultimate sense. It is Christ.
- 23:50
And Messiah is going to put into words and Lamentations 3, the emotions and the feelings of the people as their representative but also their Savior and look how he feels and Lamentations chapter 3 verse 2. He had led me and brought me into darkness and not into light verse 5. He hath builded against me and compassed me with go.
- 24:17
Cool & travail. I’m encircled by pain verse 7. He hath hinged me about that. I cannot get out. He has made my chain. Heavy verse 9. He hath enclose my ways with hewn. Stone made my pants crooked. He’s a man, who feels encircled. But fear. What was his answer? What was Messiahs answer to those feelings that?
- 24:46
He felt verse 24. Yahweh is my portion. Seth, my soul, therefore, will I hope in him. Yahweh is good unto them that wait for him to the soul that seeketh him. It is good. That a man should both hope and quietly. Wait for the Salvation of Yahweh. We are being exhorted to quietly, wait for yahweh’s salvation, quieten the noise And quietly.
- 25:32
Wait, it’s almost exactly the same expression, isn’t it? That we find in Exodus chapters 13 and 14, where you remember Israel coming out of Egypt and they found themselves at the shores of the Red Sea. On each side, there were mountains that they could not climb ahead of them, was a Red Sea which they could not swim across and behind them came thundering. The Chariots of Fierro.
- 25:57
They were in sneered in the It’s he’s encircled. It was nowhere to go fear was on every side and what did Moses say? He said stand still and see the salvation of Yahweh. It’s the same as Lamentations 3 and verse 26. When we feel trapped when we feel surrounded by fear without an obvious solution or way of Escape, our solution is To quietly wait for God’s solution.
- 26:33
You know, that weird fear occurs in around three hundred eighty five verses in the scriptures and just a little bit less than half of those. It says fear not. Fear not. And do you know what the overwhelming prevalence of words, immediately after that phrases fear, not the next words are often. For I, for I will deliver for, I will save for, I will redeem do not fear because I have a solution And this brings us to our point of being sortation this morning.
- 27:21
We can only live without fear. If we consciously replace it with faith. I mean, it’s obvious, isn’t it? When we think about it, you think about the things that you fear in your life, we typically fear the things that we can’t see more than the things that we can. We typically fear the things that we can’t control more than the things that we can control. We typically Fear the Future, and the unknown more than we fear the past, and the things that have already happened, But we’re fear thrives in the space of the things that we can’t see. We can’t control and we can’t predict. There is exactly the same space with faith. Exists.
- 28:35
Faith exists. Doesn’t it in the things that we can’t see? And in the things that we don’t have any control over all the things that we can’t manipulate, we have faith in things that we can’t see in our fathers control and Care his predictions and assurances of the future. So Faith feels exactly the same space in their minds as fear.
- 29:10
And so we have a choice. We can be surrounded by fear on every side or we can be surrounded by Yahweh on every side. You know, in Matthew chapter 8 and verses 24 to 26. We won’t go there because we know the story. The disciples were terrified that they were going to sink on the little ship on the lake of Galilee. It was a ferocious storm that even Sailors such as themselves were petrified and when they woke Christ, who was blissfully sleeping in the bottom of the boat. What was his?
- 29:53
What was his response? Matthew chapter 8 and verse 26, why are you fearful Oh, ye of little faith because Faith occupies the same space in their minds is fear. And yet, it is so much more powerful. Faith is able to cast out every fear. So we need to change our perspective, living without fear is really living with fear replaced by faith.
- 30:30
This needs to be a way of thinking, I’d like to conclude this morning with the thoughts, of a man who understood this. Intimately in his own life, who understood what? It was like to feel, may go mr. Beebe fear on every side, but he knew the answer. I’d like you to come to our reading this morning to Second of Corinthians and chapter 4,
- 30:56
because the Apostle Paul. We know experience the sufferings of Christ, more than any other living person, he filled up that which was behind of the sufferings of Christ. He’s a man who knew fear on every side. This just read a few verses in 2nd Corinthians and chapter for reading from verse 8. We are troubled on every side.
- 31:35
It’s almost exactly the same phrase. Isn’t it? Meg or miss a bit troubled on every side yet? Not distressed. We are perplexed but not in despair. Persecuted, but neither forsaken cast down. Yes, but not destroyed, always bearing about in the body. The dying of the Lord Jesus, that the life also of Jesus might be made manifest in our body for we, which live are alway delivered unto death for Jesus sake.
- 32:10
That the life also of Jesus might be made manifest in our mortal flesh. So then death worker than us, but in life in in you we having the same Spirit of Faith according as it is written, I believed and therefore have I spoken. We also believe and therefore speak knowing that he which raised up the Lord Jesus shall raise up us also by Jesus and shall present us with you.
- 32:37
For all things are for your sakes. That the abundant grace might through the Thanksgiving of many redound to the glory. God. He was a man who understood what it meant to be troubled, on every side, but he knew the solution. He was not distressed. I think at its most basic level. We Fear anything that threatens our survival, something that threatens our safety, our comfort, our house security.
- 33:14
We might summarize all of those things as something that threatens Our life. But look what verse 10 and verse 11 and verse 12. All tell us we are did see the emphasis the dying of the Lord Jesus that the life also of Jesus unto death for Jesus sake that the life also of Jesus.
- 33:38
So then diff worker than us. But life in you there’s a process of death and life and the Apostle. Paul tells us we are. Did our life is Actually, Christ’s life. He is our life. God is our answer and lives have been redeemed. Our lives are hidden in Christ. What is there to fear brothers and sisters? When we consider that, whatever we fear is actually threatening crust life?
- 34:10
Can anything threaten crust life? There’s nothing more assured in the universe than Christ’s life, and Paul is saying, that’s what we have. His life is a Oz, we are endeavoring to live the life of Jesus, in our mortal flesh verse 11, what can threaten that the life of Jesus? So here is our changed perspective, verse 15. All things are for your sakes.
- 34:47
For our sakes. You know, brothers sisters, covid is for us. It’s for the Saints. It’s to develop our faith. Our trust, Our Hope to give opportunity amongst the storms of life, that threaten to overwhelm our vessel to let us choose to replace fear with faith to let Faith occupy the same space in their minds with fear, used to Fester. Look at what Paul goes on to say. In verse has a 16 to 18 as he concludes his thoughts. For which cause we faint not.
- 35:31
But though our outward man, perish, yet the inward man is renewed day by day for our light Affliction, which is, but for a moment worketh for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of Glory. While we look not at the things which are seen. But at the things which are not seen for the things which are seen are temporal Pro, but the things which are not seen are eternal. the things which are not seen can generate fear, but Paul is saying the things that are not seen should generate faith and we get to choose We don’t know the Future. Do We brothers and sisters?
- 36:24
What our heavenly father has in store for us and neither did Paul. Neither did Paul, he understood that feeling of fear on every side. Just turn over the page to check 27 and verse 5.
- 36:41
Chapter 7 and verse 5 for when we were come into Macedonia, our flesh had no rest but we were troubled on every side without were fighting’s within were fears. What to do. Nevertheless. God. That Comfort Earth those that are cast down comforted Us by the coming of Titus. Paul had no idea what to do and all of a sudden out of the blue one, faithful young man. Walked back into the Apostle, Paul’s life and gave him the comfort that he needed.
- 37:18
We don’t know what God’s answer is, what God’s solution is. We just know that God has us brothers and sisters. How many times in our lives? If we think about our own experiences, have we been wracked with doubts and fears anxious about a circumstance or a discussion or a relationship? We can’t sleep. Very fearful, very worried about our jobs, may be a Futures a health.
- 37:52
Then, you know what, we look back on those circumstances years have gone by, and we wonder at how well, things have actually worked out in. God’s providential care. God, has us brothers and sisters. He won’t forsake us. You won’t fail us, whatever. Our Whatever Fe is, we don’t know his solution. We just have to quietly. Wait for his salvation.
- 38:23
We might feel like David, we might feel, like, Jeremiah or even our Lord, Jesus Christ surrounded by fear on every side. Let’s flip our perspective and choose to surround ourselves with Yahweh with the shield of Faith. This is what David says in another. Other psalm. Psalm 27, and this is 125, just listen to these words.
- 38:52
Yahweh is my light and my salvation. Whom Shall, I? Fear. Yahweh is the strength of my life of whom. Shall I be afraid? When the wicked even, mine enemies are my foes come upon me to eat at my flesh. They stumbled and fell do in. Host, should encamp against me. My heart shall not fear, the war should rise against me.
- 39:18
In this. Will I be confident in this? Bye. Be confident. One thing have I desired of Yahweh? That will, I seek after that. I may dwell in the house of Yahweh all the days of my life, to behold the beauty of Yahweh into and quiet in his temple in the time of trouble.
- 39:40
He shall hide me in his Pavilion, in the secret of his Tabernacle. Shall he hide me? He shall sit me up upon a rock. Let’s be determined, brothers and sisters. Is this morning, we take advantage of some quiet time in our otherwise, busy and noisy, and distracted lives. And licks as we break bread and drink wine today. And as we celebrate, the absolute certainty of Christ’s life.
- 40:20
He’s alive and we take that life into ourselves by way of bread and wine. We have his life in us. Let’s be determined to reassure ourselves that we are actually surrounded not by fear. But by Yahweh, the god of the universe and he holds us all the palm of his hand. All he asks us to do is just a trust Surrender to his will.
- 40:54
To have faith that he can solve all of the problems that we cannot reading from are closing him. Him 422. Our Father. through the coming year, we know not what shall be But we would leave without a fear, it’s ordering All To Thee. It may be we shall toil in vain for what the world holds fear. And that the good, we thought to gain, may bring us grief and care.
- 41:39
It may be that the year shall blend. Our love with anxious, fears and snatch away. The valued friend. The tried of many years. But calmly Lord on thee, we rest. No, fears are trust shall move. They’ll know us what for each is best and their perfect love. Thank you for listening to the good christadelphians talks podcast.
