  1. 0:13

Welcome to the good Christian talks podcast. I’m Levi. And I’m Chris. Thank you so much for joining us this week. On this podcast, we select one taco week to help each one of us. Get the Bible in our daily news feed. We post at the start of each week for you to listen. With a short intro beforehand to kind of set the stage for the talk you’re about to hear and now let’s hear more about this week’s talk for talk this week we’re listening to an excitation that was given by brother Dave Jennings a few weeks ago at their Verdugo Hills, Ecclesia.

  2. 0:50

And the subject of his excitation is coming from Hebrew 13, as well as the passage in Mark chapter 1 verses 16 through Money specifically where Jesus is talking to his disciples and they are in the process of amending their Nets. And the the main point of brother, Dave’s excitation is focusing on that word. Mending, the Greek word there is cat Ortiz, 0 and the idea behind it is to completely or thoroughly repair and almost to put back together perfectly and the basic idea of it is the mental ending in the building up of ourselves in our life now as it leads to our life.

  3. 1:36

When the kingdom comes, And the preparation that God puts each of us through. And in preparing us for those things gives us the opportunity to do more. And one of the points that brother they’ve made that I really enjoyed in this is that sometimes you may not feel prepared for something that God has put before you.

  4. 1:59

But there are times when it will, when he has put things in our lives to prepare us, even though we don’t realize that he gave the example of David who Dave First face down a lion and a bear before you face Goliath. Now, if you would, ask David before he went to fight Goliath and he was honest, even though he had faith that God would be with him, it’s quite a jump to go from a wild animal to a man of war and in the same way, God is preparing us for things and sometimes it may seem beyond what we can do. But if it’s something that we can do, we step forward, we do it.

  5. 2:32

And God will be with us, and we can accomplish great things and God prepares. As things in many ways to make sure that we’re ready for when those things happen. Brother, Dave has several other examples looking at that word cat Ortiz, 0, which I found to be a really encouraging one and it was one that I enjoyed hearing this excitation the reminder that you don’t always have to feel perfectly prepared for everything that if you’re sitting around waiting to feel like everything is exactly the way that you want it to be, you’re never going to step forward.

  6. 3:04

You will be like that Unfaithful servant that took his one talent and Barry. Rather than working with it, and it was a good reminder, especially right. Now, when you can feel sometimes like, you don’t know what to do, or where to go. But instead, now, you can use that this as a motivation to if there’s an opportunity that comes up to do something you step forward, and you do it and do it to the best of your ability.

  7. 3:26

It’s also a good reminder for everybody that if somebody does step forward to try to encourage that willingness to serve, even if it’s not done perfectly or the done the way that you might think that it should be done the willingness of somebody else too. Step forward and serve in, whatever, capacity, they’re able and willing to is amazing and tremendous and something that should be encouraged, not discouraged. That’s how we figure out new and better ways to do things. So really enjoy this excitation by brother. Dave is a good reminder about that, we’re all in need of mending and God is working in our lives. To help us to become more perfect as we wait for the return of his son to make us truly perfect. In that Kingdom.

  8. 4:09

So as always, thank you for the recommendations and suggestions that we get from people. We’ve got lots of lots of ones that have been coming in. That have been great. We appreciate it. We hope that everybody had a good holiday season. Now that 2020 is moving into the rearview, mirror will have new and exciting talks going forward in 2021. Thank you.

  9. 4:35

As always for your support and we pray that this is something that As beneficial and encouraging to everybody that is able to listen. Please share it with people that you think might need a little bit more upliftment and encouragement and a little bit more of the positivity from the scriptures in their in their week.

  10. 4:54

And with that we will turn this over to our brother. Dave Jennings for his excitation on the word cat Ortiz. Oh very pleased to be able to come to you today especially to be able to share Some thoughts from our readings are readings are exceptional today. I think you would all agree the readings and Micah were some of the better visions that we have the peacefulness and the beauty of the Kingdom.

  11. 5:23

I’m going to be really basing my comments out of one particular verse that we see in Hebrews and I’m hoping that this will be something that will be helpful to all of us. We’re actually going to start though this morning. By the seaside in Capernaum. And I’d like to ask you to turn to Mark chapter 1 as we get started. so, Mark, chapter 1, you know, the gospels require us to Piece things together.

  12. 6:02

It requires us to look at the four different accounts and often times between this, some not synoptic gospels and John were able to put together a better picture, and we don’t have time to do all of that in this particular story. But I’d like to suggest to you, that what we’re about to read here, in Mark chapter 1, has actually followed the time when Jesus Was to Peter and Andrew and John and James and he says, have you caught any fish and they haven’t caught any fish.

  13. 6:40

And he tells them and Luke Chapter 5, to cast the net on to the other side of the ship and reluctantly. They do this. And if you remember what ends up happening, is their Nets broke. Now, I’d like you to keep that in mind because I think this is the same period of time when we read here. Beginning at verse 16.

  14. 7:06

Says in verse 16. Now as he walked by the Sea of Galilee, he saw, Simon, and Andrew his brother. Casting into a sea, casting a net into the sea for they were Fishers and I’d suggest this is the, the period of time where we here in the Luke Chapter 5, about how they should be casting on the other side verse 17. And Jesus said unto them, Come Ye after me, and I will make you to become Fishers of Men.

  15. 7:35

Men and straight away. They forsook their Nets and followed him. And when he had gone a little farther thence, he saw James, the son of Zebedee and John his brother who also were in the ship mending, their Nets and straightway, he called them, and they left their father Zebedee and the ship with the hired servants and went after him.

  16. 8:06

So this is a familiar passage to all of us. And I think the Jesus is just had this first, maybe not first but certainly pivotal interaction with the disciples Peter and Andrew and their Associates. It’s recorded for us in Luke 5. They’ve been fishing all night without success. Now, you wonder how that happens. These are fishermen that were highly skilled. If there’s anything, they knew it was that Lake where to cast the net and we’re not to cast the net. And they would have known the conditions of a lake intimately. And I sort of Doubt, there were too many times where they went out and they didn’t catch anything. Because these were men who would have known where the fish were and not like today, where we use sonar, we go out on these boats. The sonar says, oh, right here, there’s some fish down below, they didn’t have that.

  17. 9:08

So what they used was their own experience and their own Ingenuity and if there were fish to be caught, it was by their skill and Ingenuity and experience that these fishermen would have found the fish. But we see in the Luke account that they had labored all night and caught nothing. And so we see that when Jesus tells them to cast on the other side of the boat Peter begrudgingly does this and we know the rest of the story about how they catch.

  18. 9:40

So many fish. That it says their Nets, literally burst are broke because of the abundance of the fish but what I’d like to focus on here is when we get back. To the shore. We see here in Mark chapter 1 after what probably is. This Great Hall of fish where their Nets broke? What do we see what?

  19. 10:02

We see James and John and they’re sitting by the seashore and what they’re doing they’re still on their boats, are they haven’t come into their house yet. What they’re doing is they’re working on repairing their Nets and the word that’s used here is the word mending. Now that’s going to actually be a fascinating word for us.

  20. 10:26

Let’s just talk about the net. First of all, first of all, for these fishermen a good net, this is the tool of the trade. This is the hammer and the end of the carpenter. The net might be as large as 100 or more feet long and more than 20 feet wide, it was the tool of their trade and it could be dropped down just at the right. Place and at the right time and they would be able to pull in and enclose these fish and a good, net would allow them to be pulled up safely.

  21. 11:03

See that the net would be useless in the hands of people who didn’t know the link and didn’t know where to cast it. But also a damaged net that was torn. Was also of no value. It could never enfold the fish. And they would Escape out of the place where the tear was having a net that was fully prepared for the work was critical and James. And John, they knew that their first priority before they even went into the house, to be able to enjoy dinner, or whatever it might have been.

  22. 11:44

They knew that they had to take care of their net. They had to mend it. Now, that’s important because they would have taken out all the places where was torn the useless debris that had kind of clogged the filtration of the net and gently, you can see these tough fishermen mending gently, this net. Now, look as christadelphians, we know, the value of the original Hebrew, or the original Greek. We’re familiar with these words because they in our doctrines allow us to open up the meaning of certain passages words like nefesh are nephesh or satanís, or gehenna or Agape. These are all words that.

  23. 12:42

We’re familiar with and they’re words that they open up a deeper meaning for us, a more accurate understanding of the intended Doctrine. So I’d like to introduce you to another word. If you’re not familiar with it and that’s the word that we see here for mending their Nets. That word for mending. Their Nets is a Greek word cat Ortiz. Oh, Now you’re going to really like this word cat Ortiz, though, as we follow it through, it’s a word that you’re going to want to remember because the word for The Mending of the net or counter T’s 0 is translated in a whole bunch of different ways in the New Testament.

  24. 13:24

It carries the idea of mending or repairing or putting things right back into position or enabling something to be used a week before I 40 years old. I had a double spiral fracture of my leg and the doctor. I will never forget. This of course put my leg back into the right position.

  25. 13:51

The foot was going the wrong direction and he took the foot, pulled it down and pushed it back into the right place. And while that pain was unbelievable for a moment, when it got back into the right place, 95% of the pain went away. I felt like kissing the doctor He was, it was, it was such a great thing but it’s the idea of putting things into the right place, mending them so that they can be used. That’s the idea of the word cat Ortiz, 0. So what were James and John doing carefully? Cat Ortiz, owing, mending, their Nets because they knew that our met a net.

  26. 14:33

That wasn’t repaired would be useless. If they went out the next day with the net that wasn’t repaired wasn’t mended, well, it would be useless. It couldn’t do the intended purpose.

  27. 14:50

All right, so let’s, let’s leave Capernaum and the Sea of Galilee and let’s go to a word that we just got through Reading and Hebrews chapter 13, where we see the word cat Ortiz 0 used. N. So in Hebrews chapter 13, we read this in verse 20. Now the God of Peace that brought again from the dead. Our lord Jesus that great Shepherd of the sheep through the blood of ever loved the Everlasting Covenant. Make you quatre T’s oh perfect.

  28. 15:34

In every good work to do his will Working in you that which is well pleasing in his sight through Jesus Christ to whom be glory forever and ever. Amen. So the phrase here translated make you perfect is cat Ortiz. Oh, Now, a lot of other versions will say a quick view. I like that. Actually, it carries the same general. Meaning it means to make you useful for a particular purpose. Now in the met in the Nets back in Capernaum, it was restoring that net.

  29. 16:19

And what we see here is that the we have been made perfect we have been equipped For good works. And it really makes you pause for a moment to realize that just as the fishermen labored to repair and to restore the fishing net, for your work, in the future, the next day. So, our Lord does the same for us.

  30. 16:49

He’s patiently, mending us. And without his work in our lives, we would be nothing other than torn fishing nets in capable of doing work that we are intended for in his hands. We become Fishers of Men. You see our work in the truth is not accomplished by our own Ingenuity. Our own capabilities. Sometimes I think that’s where we initially initially. Think we think well, because this person is good at this. That means that’s what they’re going to be doing in the work of the Lord.

  31. 17:33

But it’s not that way. It’s not through our own capabilities and ingenuity. When we estimate, what is possible in circumstances. What’s possible through our capabilities, we’re not doing this through the eye of Faith. We’re neglecting a critical principle about our lives in the truth. And that is With God, all things are possible as the angel said. So if you’ve labeled yourself as somebody who cannot do something, As somebody you all no one said you’re right. You can’t you can’t do it and you probably won’t but when we limit God and what God does to prepare us for good works, then we do so at our own loss.

  32. 18:30

There’s nothing more, satisfying, I don’t believe in life, then whenever the work, the Lord Works through Us in ways that we didn’t ever believe we’re possible. And there’s countless examples of how that happens in scripture, you know, we know about David facing down Goliath. Well, let’s think about that before he faced down Goliath, he had to face the lion and the bear.

  33. 19:02

And with that evidence, he had the faith to be able to face the Giant in the valley of elah. Moses thought he was ready to be able to deliver the people of Israel from Egypt, but really it wasn’t until he was out in Midian for 40 years. In relative isolation, tending sheep and Midian that he finally was prepared to go back as a humble leader, and to lead the people of Israel out of Egypt. Or Jeremiah, who thought he couldn’t speak the word of God because he was yet a young person. He had to be told that he was not to fear those that would be in front of him but that God was with him. So have you thought these kind of thoughts? Have you thought?

  34. 19:59

Well, I’m too old. Maybe you thought I’m too young? I’m not a scholar, I’m not outgoing, I’m not and the list can go on and on and on, here’s the message. The message is, God knows our capabilities. Maybe not our capability today, but he knows what you are, and what you are capable through him, and he knows what service he is going to require of you. You.

  35. 20:35

He knows your limitations better than you do and he knows what he can use and when he will need to use it. So before the act of service is put before you to do, Our God has been using cat Ortiz 0 to prepare you to mend, you to equip you to be successful in the work.

  36. 21:02

He knows the need. He knows the action that’s going to be required. He knows you, and he knows how to prepare you, all we have to do is put our trust, our trust, and our faith in him. Now, surely we have to plan and we need to work and we need to have sweat in what we do.

  37. 21:27

But you see anxiety and self-doubt, they don’t belong in our hearts. On our own. We’re like the fishermen in Capernaum who work all night thinking we can do it ourselves. Only to find out that we catch nothing. Lots of hard work doing all the right things but coming up, empty. but, When we follow the the master, when he prepares us for work that he puts in front of us, he makes his capable in ways that are sometimes counterintuitive but beyond our wildest imagination, our Nets can actually break because it’s greater than we ever thought could happen. But I’d like to add another familiar verse to this over in Ephesians.

  38. 22:22

You’ll turn with me over to Ephesians chapter 2. we don’t see the word cat or cheese do here, but we see the concept is talking about the changes that happen in the life of a person who has Become a son or a daughter of our living of the Living. God, who hath been raised up and made to sit together in Heavenly places in Christ Jesus and this is what he says in verse 10. Well let’s go back to verse 8 for by grace are ye saved through faith.

  39. 23:03

And that not of yourselves. It is the gift of God, not of Works, lest any man should boast For we are his workmanship. That’s an interesting word. Another version says we’re his work of art. We are his workmanship created in Christ Jesus unto good works which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them. I’m going to use the NIV here.

  40. 23:32

Just for emphasis for we are God’s workmanship created in Christ. Jesus to do good works which God prepared in advance. For us to do.

  41. 23:49

Well. This. This is a verse, I remember, when I first really paid attention to it, stopped me in my tracks. And if you haven’t really thought about this verse, maybe it’ll do the same for you too. It makes us think about our lives quite differently. Our lives are about doing good work. That our God has planned for us to do in advance now, sometimes people worry about, you know, what should be my Ministry? Should I go to a foreign land and work as a mission work? Well, that’s fine to do that.

  42. 24:31

If you decide to do that, what service should I do in the truth? We’re shy. Invest my time. Do I have the skill to do this, or to do that? What am I capable of? Can I do this particular service and often times that assessment of our own capabilities leads us into directions?

  43. 24:54

Where maybe it’s not really the right way to be thinking if we accept that the Lord is working in our lives, to prepare us for work that lies ahead. And we truly believe that he’s preparing us for that work. Then here’s what it requires. It requires for us to do nothing more than be responsive to the work that he puts in front of us.

  44. 25:23

Just do what’s in front of you. It reminds me of the woman who anointed the feet as scuse me actually see a none of the head of the Lord. Jesus Christ with the alabaster box of ointment. Now she knew that she was doing it for his burial. She she couldn’t stop the events that led to his crucifixion. She wouldn’t be there at the crucifixion. She was powerless to do anything about that, but what she did And what Jesus said would be done as a memorial for her. Is she did what she could?

  45. 26:05

And brothers and sisters. That’s the standard that we should all aspire to do what you can do, everything I can with the opportunities that the Lord puts before us. You see, it makes us think differently about the challenges experiences and even the difficult things that happen in our lives, About with a dreadful physical ailment.

  46. 26:37

Can be something that can actually help us if we exercise our minds, thereby to build our faith and very likely, it might help us to help others who are experiencing that. In my own knowledge or remember when my mom was going through her final couple of years with cancer. You know, I would have done anything to help my mom.

  47. 27:07

But where she found some of the most encouraging messages were from people like sister Jan here, who had also herself gone through a bout of cancer and it was her encouragement talking to my mom. That really, really helped her during that time. So sometimes we go through, unexpected situations, some enjoyable and some not so enjoyable and we should know that in the broader context of our life. The Lord is preparing us for good works where his workmanship were in his hands.

  48. 27:51

And because of the foreknowledge of God, he knows how we can take learning and wisdom from these things to be able to use them. A later time. I’m always amazed about the work of the Angels, especially how they’re rarely working on events that are happening right at that time. They’re working about events that need to happen in the future. When we read in the Book of Daniel about Gabriel having to bring my Michael, the Archangel to help him, he’s working on being able to get the King of Persia. Do something and we just read this last week about Jonah Jonah.

  49. 28:42

I’ve read over this so many times when Jonas thrown over the ship by the the men in the boat. It says that the Lord had prepared, a great fish to swallow up, Jonah and I just read right over the top of that. But think about that what did that preparation involved? It involved knowing the heart of Jonah. Who was supposed to go to Nineveh, right? It was about knowing that he would be on that ship at that place and knowing that he would be thrown overboard. All of that was known in advance and the preparation of having it at a fish that was just the right kind of fish prepared and at the right place at the right time, that’s how the Angels work.

  50. 29:35

That is how God prepares things in advance. So think about that. In the foreknowledge of God, he knows when you are just the right person to do given work, he knows the faith that you’re going to need and the preparation advance for that work. This is how we fit into the master plan.

  51. 30:02

When we do the work that he has planned in advance for us to do. That’s why we’re told James says this in Acts chapter 15, known unto God are all his works. From the beginning of the world, everything is known in advance. It’s always been amazing to me about how the Lord Jesus left. His disciples and Acts chapter 1, you know, they’d been with him.

  52. 30:31

Everything that’s go here. We’re going to do this. We’re going to do that. They were so dependent upon Jesus. And when we turn over to Acts chapter 1, Look at the instructions that he gives them verse 6 when they therefore were come together, they asked of him saying, Lord wilt thou at this time restore.

  53. 30:53

Again the kingdom to Israel. In other words, you’re going to do it right now or we’re here on the Mount of Olives. We remember the Zechariah prophecy. Are you going to restore again? The kingdom in Israel and he says, in verse 7, it is not for you to know the times or the seasons which the father hath put In his own power.

  54. 31:12

And other words, it’s not for you to know the specific time, but he goes on to say this, but you shall receive power after that. The Holy Spirit has come upon you and ye shall be Witnesses unto me, both in Jerusalem and in all Judea, and in Samaria. And unto the uttermost part of the world are the Earth. And then when he had spoken these things beheld, he was they beheld.

  55. 31:41

He was taken away from them, and I can only imagine if I were there and I was one of them might be saying, wait a second. We have a few questions before. You leave. Tell us. Wait, who’s going to go to Samaria? Who’s going to stand in Jerusalem? How long are we supposed to stay here? And when you say the uttermost part of the earth, were you talking about and who’s going to go there? And how are we going to speak the language to these people and how we going to overcome customs and language differences? And how about Gentiles, what are we supposed to do? The Gentile converts?

  56. 32:21

Are they going to have to be incorporated to become Jews Like Us? Are they going to have to be circumcised and keep the law? Are they going to have to become proselytes? I mean there would be so many questions that we would all have. But how did things actually work out well. Who went to Samaria? Well, Philip went to Samaria.

  57. 32:43

And why did he go there? Because while he was taking care of the Widow’s, he was persecuted, he fled there. It wasn’t his preparation to go to to Samaria and the issue of the converts of the Gentiles. It was really decided by a really difficult meeting that help. Happened in Jerusalem where they had seen evidence of Jewish converts, non-circumcised Jewish converts, who were embracing the gospel, and who was it? That was going to go into these uttermost parts. Well, a person who was to become the chief persecutor of the early church.

  58. 33:31

So you see this is the way it always happens. It happens in 2020 and it happened back at the beginnings of the Gospel message the plan of Jesus for their work was revealed over time and through events that they likely would not have seen coming. Their job was to have the faith to do the work. That was set before them and I’m concerned. I’m absolutely convinced brothers and sisters this is true for us.

  59. 34:07

What we need to do is to have the faith to learn about the messages. The Lord is bringing into our lives. So that when he puts the work in front of us, We’ll be able to do it because he prepared us. Now, I’d like to shift gears for a moment and and just have you turned over to Second Timothy. Second, Timothy Chapter 2, all, we all know this passage second, Timothy Chapter 2 because this is where we go to talk about the inspiration of scriptures.

  60. 34:39

And it talks about how Timothy had in verse 15 known the holy scriptures which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith, which is in Christ Jesus. And then it goes on to say, all scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for Doctrine for reproof for correction for instruction, in righteousness.

  61. 35:05

All right. So that’s what we see about. The study of the word. It should be done with the idea that when we study the word, it is going to reshape our minds. It’s going to prepare our minds. And how does it do that? Well, it does it by Doctrine. And then Word Doctrine there is not just about what we see in like a statement of faith, it is about being able to understand what truth is.

  62. 35:32

So that we can have a standard that we can live by and reproof is about helping us to understand and to discern where we’ve gone wrong so that we can use it as a basis of self-examination. In correction is what restores us to a right state that brings us closer to that standard and finally instruction in righteousness, is the idea of careful training instruction. All right, so if we read the word, we know that we’re being instructed, we’re getting the right standard. It’s shaping our minds.

  63. 36:15

So we can be able to tell where we are departing from the nerd and get us back to the standard. Now, what’s the purpose? Well, we have to read verse 17. That the man of God may be perfect. Seen that word before throughly furnished. Unto all good works. I’d love that verse that the man of God may be perfect throughly.

  64. 36:48

Furnished unto all good works. It’s not thoroughly furnished. I was corrected. When I read that wrong, when I was a younger, man, it’s the word throughly. And I love that word throughly because it’s through the Lord, that we are perfected eats through the war. The Lord that we work. He will furnish us unto all good works. Remember in Acts 15, the Paul and Barnabas talked about the Wonders and the Miracles that God had worked through them. So Bible study has drawn us together as a community, and if we’re not careful, sometimes it can be something that becomes a source of Pride or self-reliance. But there’s a reason for studying the Bible and the reason is is it’s enjoyable.

  65. 37:45

It’s a challenge for our minds. It is useful for correction, but what it does is It prepares us for the work that God is preparing us to do each time our Oak, we open our Bibles. What we ought to be thinking is how can I learn something here that I might be able to apply in the future in my life.

  66. 38:09

The last consideration brothers and sisters is in Galatians. So if you turn back to me, with me to Galatians, Chapter 6 here. We see the word cat Ortiz. A one more time. Relations chapter 6. Verse 1 Brethren. If a man be overtaken in a fault. Ye, which are spiritual cat Artis. Oh, such a one In the spirit of meekness considering thyself lest thou also be tempted bear, ye one another’s burdens and so fulfill the law of Christ. For if a man think himself to be something when he is nothing, he deceiveth himself.

  67. 38:58

Let every man prove his own work and then shall he have rejoicing in himself alone and not another for every man shall bear his own burden. So that’s an interesting word in verse one, restore such a one in the spirit of meekness. That’s the word cat Ortiz, 0. So when we think of reaching out to our brothers and sisters who are struggling with sin where we’re trying to help them, we shouldn’t be thinking of tearing or ripping, or crushing, or destroying or condemning.

  68. 39:39

The word we should be thinking of is to think of mending, which is the word consistent with what we saw with those fishermen. At the city of Capernaum, think of gently mending how marvelous it would be for all of us to remember in the lessons of our life. That what we are called to do as a community as brothers and sisters is to gently men.

  69. 40:07

And so now we turn to the sacrifice of our Lord. He is the one who restores is the one that prepares our hearts, he desires us to do good work. He expects a return on the investment to rise to the occasion when an opportunity or a talent is placed in front of us. He will chasten us for our learning, he will carefully remove the debris, in the tears in our Nets, so that we will be prepared.

  70. 40:47

You see brothers and sisters. There’s really no room for pessimism in our service of the lord. We should put aside all negative thinking. It’s unhelpful when it comes to limitations that we might have. Because in the truth, we are his workmanship. We’re a work of art. He is gently shaping us mending us for his good purpose. So may each of us put our confidence in him for he will make us perfect in every good work to do. His will working in you that which is well pleasing in his sight through Jesus Christ to whom be glory forever and ever. Amen.
