Welcome to the good Christian talks podcast. I’m Levi. And I’m Chris. Thank you so much for joining us this week. On this podcast, we select one taco week to help each one of us. Get the Bible in our daily news feed. We post at the start of each week for you to listen. With a short intro beforehand to kind of set the stage for the talk, you’re about to hear.
- 0:33
And now let’s hear more about this week’s talk. Hey Chris hey Levi. How you doing? I’ve gotten an answer for that over the over this week at work. It’s as good as I can be doing. That’s my answer. You go. My answer has been stay safe and stay sane has been has been the goal every day.
- 1:02
Yeah, it’s just a very still a very strange time. We were recording this one together because we had the idea to post an expectation that someone had given just recently. So we’re doing Richard Morgan who exhorted it. Simi Hills on March 29th and it’s kind of been funny. Simi Hills has kept their live stream going.
- 1:28
You usually attend? Verdugo Hills and I am I am a member at Simi Hills but actually have been attending Korea town for a couple of years which is the Los Angeles, Hispanic meeting, but it feels like Simi Hills has decided to continue with this live stream which has been helpful for a bunch of meetings. A bunch of Ecclesia is nearby in Southern California? Yeah, it’s been awesome.
- 1:48
One of the fun little quirks that I’ve been doing with the live stream is in addition to I like to take notes and jot things down while I’m listening helps me to focus during the excitation, but one of the things I do because I have a airplane, the video from My iPad up onto the screen.
- 2:03
Is I glance every once in awhile at what the live stream number, is because the the stream tells you that. So, like for this excitation the max was 113 viewers. But for a lot of those viewers, there’s multiple people. So like, for at our house, it’s one viewer. But there’s technically five people in the house, right?
- 2:21
So just kind of gives you. I just kind of like the idea of, you know, you’re sitting there in your living room with just, you know, just your family but looking at that and then you can just kind of guesstimate on the numbers but you No, it’s almost as big as a Bible School in some cases, the number of people that are all streaming with you at the same time which I just think it’s kind of cool especially with everyone kind of feeling like you’re kind of isolated right now.
- 2:42
Definitely unifying feeling it’s confusing actually because I you can go on there you can go. So Simi Hills has a Vimeo page and it will actually show like between five and seven hundred views on each of these exhortations last few weeks. So I don’t understand the numbers on that. I think might be like, people logging in and out.
- 3:01
Anyways, we’re kind of jumping or kind of fallen off topic. That this was a great excitation. So I was actually in the room because I was reading, my brother was reading and my father was presiding will. Richard was Richard, was there exhorting? So it was, It was obviously a bit, you know, a pleasure to experience this education in person listening to Richard and he was so such a blessing that Luke 21 was our third portion reading on that Sunday. That’s a, you know, a beautiful chapter, which is what he focused on the Olivet prophecy.
- 3:31
See. And you know what? We’ve been quoting about about fear and all that lately. So is excellent. Excellent expectation. What were your, what were your notes from that exhort? So I really enjoyed it. It was one of those a really practical way of looking at prophecy. So you know the Olivet prophecy is one that we already identified as being one of those dual prophecies, right?
- 3:54
It’s prophecy about 80 70 and about what’s going to happen when the Romans conquered Jerusalem. And he spent some time looking at some of those things. And Talking about what the people in Jerusalem would have experienced and what that would have been like for the Believers that were in the city at the time, who would have seen Luke, Luke 21, and read those passages.
- 4:13
And then applied that. And then at the same time, how that applies to our time, Richard made the really good point that, you know, we don’t know if this is the end times yet, but if it is I think, you know, we mentioned the last time you and I were talking together, if this isn’t it, this is very much what it could be like for us.
- 4:31
Yeah, he made, he made the exact same kind of the exact same point that we had said last time, we talked just like, if this isn’t it. This is what this, this is what it looks like. Anyways, this is a great expectation, I think happy to share with people. You had the idea to post this on Saturday night for people to use on Sunday if they are you. No not at their normal meeting.
- 4:52
So some excited to say to share this with everybody. Yeah, and the I wanted to highlight one more thing. Just that Richard had mentioned that I thought was kind of the what I felt was kind of his call to action from this expectation and that was kind of the the what Christ says to his disciples at the end of Luke 21, right about watching being on guard. You know, basically what he says, it’s in Luke 21:36 and I kind of have this all like highlighted and underlined in my notes right?
- 5:19
Is he tells them to stay awake, pray and have strength, which I feel is a very good expectation and You’re for all of us especially right now and it’s what’s amazing is that, you know, Jesus was saying this to them as he was going to go pray to God, just before he went through the crucifixion, but he was giving them their last little bit of advice on.
- 5:42
This is what you need to do to see yourself through the times that we are about to experience the same kind of thing for us. Now, all the emotions that Christ might have gone through during the time, when he was in The Garden of Gethsemane, to be crucified, all the emotions that those During Jerusalem for 8070, we’re going through and not to make living at home during the quarantine feel like a Siege of Jerusalem by the Roman army.
- 6:05
But the same thing kind of the wave of emotions that many of us have felt during the uncertainty in the craziness of everything that’s going on right now. Yeah, it’s a yeah, it’s there’s a strong call to action. I sorted it, Simi Hills, just this last last Sunday and kind of referred back to his station twice, because it was a, it was really excellent.
- 6:26
So, here it is. Richard Morgan on Luke next station, and Luke 21 from March 9th. Well, a very good morning to everyone. The the jello family that here with me to this morning in the hall and everyone who is watching on the live feed. Perhaps, brothers, and sisters during this time of uncertainty as Jeff mentioned, and of anxiety fear, whatever.
- 6:53
Emotion that we’re feeling maybe our forts have gone to this, Olivet prophecy and particular. Those verses that I was going to call you Luke that Levites Thread in verses 25 and 26 about distress of Nations. Perplexity men’s Hearts, failing them for fear and maybe that’s what we’re thinking that we’re on the verge of or we’re right in the middle of right now.
- 7:20
So what we want to do by way of X or teaching this morning brother and sisters as have a look at what Jesus says in this Olivet prophecy and see his exhortation that comes out for it and see how it can encourage Us in these very difficult times. Now the Olivet prophecy itself can be roughly divided into two halves the first half.
- 7:42
Jesus details events leading up to ad 70 and then he talks about and any kind of parallels ad 70, which was the end of the Jewish World with the end of the Gentile World, which is the days in which way living we’re living times, which are going to lead up to the end of this world, as we know it.
- 8:06
And we can learn a lot of lessons from what happened in ad 70 and apply them to ourselves today. So let’s start by having a look down in verse 10 here, where Jesus talks about events which would lead up to that cataclysmic. Time of AD 70, when the Roman armies came surrounded Jerusalem besieged it and eventually destroyed the temple destroyed the city killed, a huge amount of Jews who are in that city of that time and led the rest away captive and that was the end of the Jewish World.
- 8:43
So he says in verse 10, he said to the nation will rise against nation and Kingdom against Kingdom. There will be great earthquakes and in various places famines and pestilences and it will be Terrors and great signs from heaven. But before all this, they will lay their hands on you. And now, you can see that this is talking about ad 70, because it’s talking about what.
- 9:05
The Disciples of the Lord Jesus Christ would experience between what he says. Now, in the Olivet prophecy and the outworking of it, the initial outworking of it at 80 70. He says, all before all this, they will lay their hands on you, you disciples and persecute, you delivering you up to synagogues and prisons, and you will be brought before Kings and governors for my name’s sake, Now, look what he says in verse 13 because up until now it’s all doom and gloom, but in verse 13, Jesus flips it around.
- 9:42
He says, look at the positives of all. This verse 13 says, this will be your opportunity to Bear Witness. Now, what a wonderful thing. Our Lord Jesus Christ says there. This will be your opportunity. This is an opportunity for you. God is opening a door for you to Bear witness and maybe we can allay some of the anxiety that we might feel.
- 10:05
At this time, brothers and sisters, by flipping it around. And seeing what has God given to us in these difficult times? Is this an opportunity for us? Is the whole world is paused. And we have time now to pause at home with our families, maybe with more time, on our hands to reflect to do some introspection to spend more time with our families to figure out whether we are true, Brothers and Sisters of the Lord, Jesus Christ and preparing our hearts and Minds for the return of our Lord. And maybe this is an opportunity that God has given to us, brothers and sisters to do.
- 10:50
That to prepare ourselves to get our minds in the right frame. In order to welcome our Lord when he returns. And then in verse 14, he says, settle it there for on your minds, not to meditate before. Had to answer for, I will give you a mouth and wisdom which none of your adversaries will be able to withstand or contradict. Now I want us to keep in mind, that would adversaries there what we’re going to have a look at in our excitation brother and sisters is how Luke in his gospel record keeps referring back to things which Jesus said previously, So he talks here about adversaries, you only uses this word twice in his gospel record will look at the other occurrence a little bit later on.
- 11:40
And here, he tells his disciples that they’re going to be able to say things in witnessing that those adversaries are not going to be able to withstand and we’re going to see an actual example of Jesus doing that very thing witnessing and confounding his adversaries earlier on in Luke.
- 12:02
And it says, then in verse 16 you will be delivered up even by parents and brothers and relatives and friends. And some of you they will put to death. Some of you, they will put the death. So Jesus doesn’t beat about the bush here. He says, some of you will suffer during this time You will be put to death. And as Jeff said in his opening remarks maybe the worst will happen to us during this time.
- 12:29
We don’t know. But look what Jesus then says in verse 17 you will be hated by all but for my namesake but Despite all of this, not a hair of your head will perish. By your endurance, you will gain your lives. This is the message of Jesus, to his followers and message of of reassurance. That not ahead, a hair of your head will perish, you will gain your lives.
- 12:57
Now, when we look at verse 16, it says some of you are they will put the death that seems like a contradiction. You’re going to die but you won’t perish. I think what the Lord Jesus Christ is saying their brothers and sisters. Is that not even death? Is it enemy too strong for God? Despite some of you dying.
- 13:23
Death will be conquered. And that’s what we come to remember this morning in the bread and the cup is it brother and sisters? How our Lord Jesus Christ was put to death. But now he is at God’s right hand and death has been vanquished by a Lord. And that’s the encouragement for us brothers and sisters as we go through these difficult times. So then he says in verse 20 and this is the main sign that was there for the followers of Our Lord in ad 70, it says in verse 20.
- 13:55
But when you see Jerusalem surrounded by armies, then know that it’s desolation, has come near. So Jesus here enlightens the eyes of those who would listen to his message. And it’s interesting because then he says in verse 21 that those who are in Judea flee to the mountains. So this was an opportunity Jesus gave them to escape. And what happened in ad 70?
- 14:21
Is that the Romans initially came, they surrounded, the city for a short period of time but then they left and what Jesus is saying to them is when that happens, that’s your opportunity to flee to the mountains. And if they had ears to hear, they would heed that message and obey the sign that Jesus gave them and they would Escape. But if they had fallen asleep, spiritually speaking at this point and thought, well, everything’s going to be fine now.
- 14:50
Well, the Roman armies came back sometime later and then they stayed and they came back brothers and sisters at about this time of year. The time of Passover when many many Jews had flocked into Jerusalem from the four corners of the world. And it was a strategic element of the Romans to do this to trap many Jews in the city of Jerusalem. And here they are in me if you like it, enforced, quarantine surrounded by armies surrounded, by the Roman power. And the end now had come.
- 15:33
And so, it says, in verse 24, They will fall by the edge of the sword and that’s what happened to many, many Jews Josephus estimates that there were 1.1 million Jews as probably an over exaggeration. But most of the Jews in the city did for at the hands of the Romans. And that the hands of other people would talk about that in a moment. So they will fall by the edge of The Sword and the rest of them. It says, in verse 24 will be led captive, among all nations, and this present sisters was the end of the world for the Jews. This was the Fulfillment of those curses that are outlined in Leviticus chapter 26, in Deuteronomy chapter 28, her, they would be scattered among the Nations and even amongst those Nations, they would suffer. And so, all of these things now are going to come to pass and Jerusalem verse halfway through verse 24 will be trampled, underfoot by the Gentiles until the times of the Gentiles are fulfilled.
- 16:41
And now, Jesus is going to turn his attention to those times of the Gentiles. But what he’s going to say is that whereas the Jewish world came to an end, and I was replaced by the Gentile times. There’s a parallel and he says just as the Jewish world came to an end, so the Gentile world will come to an end. And that’s what he’s going to outline now in the rest of the Olivet prophecy.
- 17:10
So we can learn some lessons, we can learn lessons from ad 70. Look at the end of the Jewish World, look at some of the things that the people experienced and and analyze. Some of the emotions that are must have been going through them and we can apply that brother and sisters to our situation today. So Jesus says in verse 25 now in relation to the end of the Gentile world, he says in verse 25, there will be signs in sun and moon and stars and on the earth distress of Nations notice Nations plural, there’s not just now distress and that would distress by the way, is a synonym for anxiety, anxiety of Nations plural.
- 17:58
The coronavirus brothers sisters. The last time I looked was in 160 over 160 nations of the world, that’s incredible. And our lifetime. We haven’t seen anything like this and we are seeing distress of Nations. Aren’t we Brothers? Whether this coronavirus were experiencing now is what verse 25 years talking about. Well we don’t know in hindsight will know but we are seeing distress of Nations.
- 18:26
We are seeing how these signs at least could come to pass. Which is through this tiny invisible protein that invades the human body that that can bring the world to its knees. It’s an incredible thing. And so if we question, whether this ever could come to pass well, now we understand brother and sisters, it could distress of Nations anxiety of nations in perplexity. That’s an even stronger word for anxiety. The idea behind the word perplexity is that there is No Way Out.
- 19:05
No Way Out. Now just think about the Jews in ad 70 and how that’s applicable to them to no way out. You know, you’re in you’re in Jerusalem and you’re surrounded by the Romans. The superpower of the day, there is no way out. And there was no way out and everyone was either killed or scattered throughout the Earth.
- 19:35
So it says in verse 26, people fainting with fear all. Sorry, before we get to that, we haven’t read the end of verse 25. Distress of nations with perplexity because of the Roaring and a c. In the ways. I didn’t want to forget this point brother and sisters because of the Roaring of the Sea and the waves. Now they’re Jesus is using symbolic language, isn’t he? Although there may be a physical element to this. They may be at the time of the coming of the Lord and increase in earthquakes and tsunamis, there may be a literal roaring of the Sea and the waves.
- 20:08
But really, what Jesus is doing there is using symbolic language to describe the sort. Of emotion. That’s going through people at the time of the end, the Roaring of the Sea and the waves and you can you can have that image in your hair to describe what it’s like in the last days.
- 20:29
But what’s really interesting about this brother and sisters? Is that what Jesus is doing by saying the Roaring of the Sea? And the waves is, he’s really alluding to that Psalm that we had read earlier. It’s quite intriguing what Jesus is doing here. So, keep in Barker in Luke and just turn with me back to Psalm 65, and Jesus is quoting from Psalm 65, and it’s a really interesting context that he quotes from. The Discerning ear would pick up on this Echo and think, well, isn’t that interesting?
- 21:12
Because I have a look, what some 65 is all about. It says in verse 5, by awesome Deeds you answer us with righteousness o God of our salvation. And what this Psalm is all about brothers sisters, is that God of our Salvation Jesus is alluding to the solution of a problem. The whereas the nations are in distress in perplexity, whereas the nation, see there is no way out.
- 21:43
Listen says well, yes, actually, there is a way out. Through the god of our Salvation. It says, in verse 5 there that God of our Salvation is, the hope of all the ends of the Earth, a God, who is not just interested in the city of Jerusalem, and the Jews in ad 70. But he’s the God of all the ends of the Earth. The god of the father sees.
- 22:13
God is keenly interested in well over the hundred and sixty Nations that are suffering from the coronavirus at this point. If he is the solution, he is the one verse 6, who by his strength established, the mountains being girded with might and it’s the great and awesome God Of Heaven, brother and sisters who is in control of this situation. And we have nothing to fear.
- 22:41
And it says, in verse 7 that he Stills, and here’s the words that Jesus was alluding to. He Stills The Roaring of the Seas, the Roar Of their waves, the tumult of the peoples and their the psalm itself interprets the, the figurative language of the Roaring of the Sea and the waves. It’s the tumult of the peoples in distress in perplexity, but the god of the father sees the God of all the end of the Earth.
- 23:16
Can still the tumult of the people’s. Verse 8, so that those who dwell at the ends of the Earth everywhere, over the whole earth are in awe at your signs because it’s those signs that Jesus is bringing out in the Olivet prophecy and the end of verse 8 says, you make the going out of the morning and the evening to shout for joy.
- 23:46
So here’s the end of the story, a shout for joy. We know the end of the story brothers and sisters in, right in the midst of that. Doom and Gloom prophecy in verses, 25, and 26. And so, on of the elevator, Olivet prophecy as we return back to Luke 21, and the midst of all this language about distress, anxiety, and so forth.
- 24:12
Jesus alludes. To the end of the story and the solution to the problem, there will be a shout for Joy. That’s what we’re leading up to brothers and sisters. So, come back with me to Luke chapter 21.
- 24:30
Carry on in verse 26, people fainting with fear? King James says, men’s Hearts, failing them for fear for those things that are coming on the world. So people fainting with fear and with foreboding, That’s a really good translation of their foreboding. That’s that sense that we have that horrible feeling we have when our, when I stomach just like feels all scrunched up and and awful that the sense that something is coming.
- 25:02
We don’t know when it’s coming, but it’s coming and maybe you have that sense of foreboding now, brothers and sisters, you know, you read the news and you see the number of people being affected and so forth and that sense of when is this going to come into my house? When is it going to affect my family? My loved ones.
- 25:21
Foreboding the expectation of something horrible about to happen. Now, imagine what it was like again in ad 70, you reduce stuck in Jerusalem. No way out. Can you imagine the foreboding and you’re wondering? When are you going to die?
- 25:44
And your end is known. You know that you’re stuck in this city, you’re either going to die at the hands of the Romans. Well, you’re going to die at the hands of a fellow Jew. One of the remarkable things about ad 70 is that the within the city of Jerusalem factions formed and it was in fighting while while the Romans were surrounding, there was infighting amongst the Jews and he started killing each other. And even some of them went to the food supply, and destroy the food supply.
- 26:16
I mean, how ridiculous is that? And the rationale behind it, if you can call it rationale, was that, well, if we destroy the food supply and maybe that will motivate God to save us, that’s the sort of mindset there in at this point.
- 26:35
You’re in the midst of this, you’re gonna die at the hands of the Romans. Are you gonna die from the hand of a fellow Jew? Or you’re going to die? A slow death of starvation, and you might in the midst there, eat one of your children. I mean, it was just absolutely horrible. What happened?
- 26:52
Or you’re going to be led away captive. Either way, it is the end of your world. It’s done. And a lot of people in this world of feeling like that right now, that’s that same sense of foreboding. Is the virus going to get me. Is the economic situation going to get me? Is this the end of my world? As I know it?
- 27:18
So I get a little bit of little bit of a sense of maybe what it was like for people in those days. So again in verse 26, people fainting with fear with foreboding of what is coming on the world for the powers of the heavens, will be shaken and we know that the powers of the heavens is symbolic of the rulers of the world, the Donald Trump’s of the world and he says, you know, they are going to be shaken. These men who appear on TV screens, all powerful and whatnot, they’re going to be shaken by events because they’re not going to see any way out of the situation. Whether it’s a virus, whether its climate change, whether it’s terrorism, whatever it might be.
- 28:06
That eventually brings the fullness of this prophecy. It’s going to shake the powers of the heavens. Now, down in verse 34, Jesus gives a follow-up excitation based on on his words here, he says in verse 34, but watch yourselves. So we’re privileged to your brother and sisters to have the words of our Lord Jesus Christ, to Enlighten, our eyes to give us signs that we might acknowledge the sort of times that were in just as he gave the signs to those in ad 70. So the excitation for us plans is to watch ourselves. Lest your hearts.
- 28:51
Be weighed down with dissipation and drunkenness and cares of this life and Jesus there, acknowledges that we can turn to Isn’t he says that’s not the solution, whether you’re escaping in drink or any other ways that this world tries to escape from reality. It doesn’t change reality. Does it brother and sisters Jesus?
- 29:11
That’s not the solution. So, don’t go down that way, even though you are weighed down. That’s a really interesting word that Jesus uses their weighed down. As we feel the burden on our shoulders is the idea of a burden. It’s a very unusual would use about five or six times in the New Testament.
- 29:32
So, you know, there’s burdens on our shoulders right now, whether it’s in or mortality in general, or the anxiety of what we’re going through, the foreboding of, what’s going to come next with, maybe a very deep economic recession. Whatever’s going through our minds brothers sisters, we tend to be weighed down with the cares or the anxiety.
- 29:54
A piece of Life were bent over with these things. What we’re going to talk about is the solution to that. What if we feel weighed down brother and sisters? What is the solution we’re going to talk about that? It’s the same word that’s used interestingly, in the record of Gethsemane and the disciples. You remember, they were heavy with sleep, they were weighed down with sleep, so it’s used of the disciples and what the disciples went through in Gethsemane. Perhaps symbolic of how we might feel when things get difficult that we feel so weighed down a bogged down by it that we become bent over and Jesus wants us to get over that and he’s going to explain how to do it.
- 30:47
Now the same word, let’s just have a look at one of the recurrence of this wood is in second Corinthians. And chapter one. Second Corinthians. Chapter 1 and the Apostle Paul uses this same word. In describing experiences that he has gone through. Just look at the strength of the words of the Apostle Paul here.
- 31:15
He says in 2nd Corinthians chapter 1 here in verse 8. For we do not want you to be ignorant Brothers of the Affliction we experienced in Asia for we were so actually burdened, it’s the same word weighed down. We were so utterly burdened beyond our strength. The pool doesn’t use those words lightly.
- 31:43
You meant them. They are. It was beyond our strength. He was in perplexity. In other words, there was no way out. Beyond the strength that we despaired of life itself. Just as the people experienced in the gut in ad 70. Verse 9, indeed. We felt that we had received the sentence of death. That’s how they felt at this point. Look at what Paul then goes on to say, but and he turns that he flips this around again.
- 32:23
He puts the positive spin on this dire situation, he’s in. But that was to make us rely not on ourselves, but on God who raises the Dead. And that’s maybe another way we can think about our situation right now, brothers, and sisters, and some way God is giving us a lesson, not to rely on ourselves. But to rely on God, who raises the dead to put all our trust in the God.
- 32:55
Who is the one who will solve the problems that this world is going through verse 10. He delivered us from such, a deadly Peril and he will Deliver Us on him. We have set our hope that he will. Liver us again. That’s the frame of mind. We need to get ourselves into And then he says in verse 11, you also must help us by prayer. so, despite the fact that he did understand that God would deliver him, he still Relied on the prayers of his brothers and sisters and there’s obviously lessons for there for us as well.
- 33:34
So come back with me to Luke chapter 21. Let’s carry on reading these words, this exhortation that Jesus gives, so don’t be weighed down. With the cares of this life for that day will come upon you suddenly like a trap and then in verse 35, it will come upon all who dwell on the face of the whole earth.
- 33:58
You see the all-encompassing outworking of these? The situation brother and sisters. Not now confined to Jerusalem, but the whole world and again, we’ve seen that this where we’re experiencing this right now. How these things can affect the father seeds, sees the end of The world. So he says, in verse 36, stay awake at all times. Don’t try to escape from these things but try and dampen the anxiety through dissipation drunkenness and the other things, but stay a week.
- 34:40
And he says praying that you may have strength to escape all these things. There’s the echo there with Paul’s words were just writing Corinthians that God will deliver us and he will deliver us again. So praying that you may have strength to escape. All these things that are going to take place and to stand before the son of man. Now have a look at some of the language there and see if you can think of another Echo here.
- 35:10
Look at the keywords in verse 36, stay awake. Pray. Have strength. Now, one of the wonderful things about the Lord, Jesus Christ, is that he always practices what he preaches and of course we’d expect that. And what Jesus is going to do now in the very next chapter in Luke chapter 22, is he is going to demonstrate the principle of what he’s been talking about, because the very next occurrence in Luke chapter. 22 is Jesus going into the Garden of Gethsemane.
- 35:50
Now, talk about distress, perplexity fainting, with fear foreboding, anxiety, and bejesus experiences at all. Now, in the Garden of Gethsemane, he goes as it were through a little licks, a little ad, 70 experience. The garden is surrounded by the Roman and Jewish authorities and there is no way out. So we read in chapter 22 here in verse 39. He came out and went as was his custom to the Mount of Olives to the scene of his words, in the Olivet prophecy, the disciples followed him.
- 36:31
Verse 14, when he came to the place, he said to them, pray this one of the keywords pray that you may not enter into temptation. Or trial verse 41 and he withdrew from them about a stone’s throw and knelt down and he himself prayed saying, father, if you are willing, remove this cup from me nevertheless not my will but yours be done. And Jesus is experiencing that sentence of death in himself and he prays to God, if there is a way out, then provide it, please.
- 37:10
But he finally submits to the will of God because he knows that God is in control, despite anything that the Roman and Jewish authorities can do to him, even death itself is not too powerful and enemy for the god of the ends of the Earth. And so, in verse 43, the repaired to him, an angel, from heaven, strengthening him. There’s another of the key words that Jesus said in that verse, God will strengthen us to endure to the end? And then, in verse 44, we get the emotion of Our Lord at this point.
- 37:48
Being in an Agony, he prayed more earnestly and his sweat became like great drops of blood falling down to the ground. Can you imagine brothers and sisters? The anguish, the foreboding fear of Our Lord at this time, knowing that he is going to be arrested. He’s going to be flogged. Scourged and a nailed to a cross and die. A slow agonizing death.
- 38:22
You see, Jesus knows what it’s like. He knew what it would be like for those going through ad 70. He knows what it’s like for us right now. He knows our anxiety. He knows our fear. and we come to remember this morning, how our Lord went through all of that for us, And how God saved him out of it.
- 38:51
Verse 45, verse 45 and when he rose from prayer, he came to his disciples and found them sleeping for sorrow. In the other accounts heavy weighed down burdened that same word with sleep, Another key words that Jesus uses and he said to them, why are you sleeping? And that’s a lesson for us today.
- 39:14
But this is why are we sleeping? God is nudged us awake at this point in our lives. He says, wake up. Why are you sleeping rise and pray that you may not enter into temptation? And that’s the call that’s gone out to us right now, brother and sisters. Let us rise and pray. Now, I want to wait one last Point here, brother and sisters and it’s what I mentioned earlier. How Luke in many of his words, he is referring back to something that happened earlier that Jesus said we talked about the the adversaries early on that, they would not be able to withstand the preaching of the Apostles. Now, come with me to Luke chapter 13. Let’s have a quick look at what happens in this chapter. Luke chapter 13.
- 40:17
So, as I said, this is one of the really interesting things about Luke’s gospel record. In the Olivet prophecy. Jesus talks about anxiety. And he talks about being ready for his coming. But when you look at Luke 21 itself, he doesn’t actually say much about. How do you deal with anxiety? How do you get yourself, ready?
- 40:42
Well, the reason for that is because Jesus already talked about that earlier, in Luke. If you look 10 for instance, in Luke chapter 12, I have some headings above some of the paragraphs here. So for instance, at the in chapter 12, the heading in verse 22 is do not be anxious. So if you want to know how to overcome anxiety, just go back to Luke 12, read verses 22 to 34.
- 41:07
And then the heading above verse 35, my my version. There says, You must be ready. Jesus explains her in detail. How are we to ready ourselves for the return of Our Lord?
- 41:21
Well as another instance of this over in Chapter 13, in a miracle of healing, which Jesus performs in verses 10 to 17 and we know that with the healing Miracles of our Lord, didn’t just heal for the sake of it, there was a lesson in the healings. There was a parable in the healings and we get that in the healing of this woman who had a disabling spirit for eighteen years. Now, have a look at the result of the healing first. All invert in Chapter 13 and verse 17. It says, as he said these things all his adversaries, see that? That’s the word that anticipates, what the Olivet prophecy is going to say.
- 42:08
All his adversaries were put to shame. So Jesus showed early on in Luke 13, how your adversaries will not be able to withstand you. So, Jesus went through the example himself here. They were put to shame and all the people rejoiced at all the Glorious things were done by him. So, how did he put his adversaries to shame? Well, let’s have a look at this miracle and notice some of the key language that is used here.
- 42:36
So it says in verse 10, No, he was teaching in one of the synagogue’s on the Sabbath and there was a woman who had a disabling spirit for eighteen years. She was bent over and could not fully straighten herself. So this woman brothers sisters represent us When we are bent over, when we are weighed down burdened by sin, mortality the anxieties and the cares of this life for 18 years, she suffered that. And what Jesus is going to do is solve her problem. What Jesus can do is, we remember in the emblems this morning, brothers sisters, he can solve our being weighed down to, he can solve our anxiety, is an all of our fears. And so, in verse 12, when Jesus saw her, he called her over and said, woman, you are freed from a disability that interesting language.
- 43:35
Why does Jesus say that you are freed from your disability? I mean, he could have said anything. You could’ve said you are cured. He could have said you are.
- 43:46
Your faith has made you whole for instance, as he said, another healing Miracles, but Jesus, chooses to use the word freed as if this woman has been in a sort of prison. Bound by her disability and now Jesus is going to free her from it. Let’s apply that to ad 70, that’s apply that to Jesus in Gethsemane.
- 44:12
Let’s apply that to our imprisonment in our homes right now. With this quarantine, Jesus can free us. Literally and he will free us spiritually from these things. You are free. Free with disability verse 13. He laid his hands on her and immediately. She was made straight and she glorified God. So there is Jesus, has the solution. He can take the burden off our shoulders, all of our anxieties, all of our fears.
- 44:42
Jesus takes them away and he can make a stand up straight. But the ruler of the synagogue in verse 14 indignant because Jesus had healed on the Sabbath said to his, to the people, there are six days on which work ought to be done. Come on these days. He’ll be healed and not on the Sabbath day. Then the Lord answered him.
- 45:03
You Hypocrites. Now again have a look at the language that Jesus uses here. Why does he use? This example does not each of you on the Sabbath. Untie his ox or his Donkey from the manger and Lead it away to water it. Why does he use that example? You can use any number of examples of things they did on the Sabbath day, but he talks about untying his ox or donkey.
- 45:26
So, again, the language, here is about someone who is Shackled in some way imprisoned, in some way. And Jesus can untie us from that.
- 45:38
And then he says in verse 16 or not, this woman a daughter of Abraham whom Satan Bound for eighteen years. There’s the language. Again she has been bound by this disability. You can see the language. Jesus wants us to pick up from this, that would Bound. By the way, is the same word that’s used.
- 46:00
When the authorities came into the Garden of Gethsemane, and they bound Jesus, and led them away. So Jesus knows what it’s like to be bound by this disability, Jesus knows what it’s like to be weighed down with distress and foreboding and anxiety. He’s gone through it and he was bound. but, Not this woman who was being bounded, says, at the end of verse 16, be loosed from this Bond on the Sabbath day.
- 46:37
Let’s look at Acts chapter 2 very quickly where that same wood, loosed is used. Jesus had the sentence of death in himself. He’s anxiety, his fear was there in the Garden of Gethsemane and they did bind him and they did take him away and they did put him to death.
- 47:02
But Acts chapter 2 again. Written by Luke says, the following in verse 22, men of Israel. Hear these words, Jesus of Nazareth, a man attested to you, by God, with Mighty works and wonders and signs that God did through him in your midst, as you yourselves know, this Jesus delivered up according to their definite plan and foreknowledge of God. You see, this is this didn’t catch. God by surprise.
- 47:31
He didn’t have to scramble around trying to figure this out. They’ve taken my son and they’re gonna crucify him. This is all part of the definite plan and foreknowledge of God. And what we’re going through right now, brother and sisters is all part of God’s plan. He is in control. He is the god of the far ends of the Earth. We have nothing to fear.
- 47:52
God knows the end from the beginning. You crucified and killed by the hands of Lawless men. But verse 24, that is not too powerful and enemy for God. Verse 24, God raised him up. Loosing the pangs of death because it was not possible for him to be held by it. Not even death is too strong, a power for God.
- 48:21
So no matter what we’re going through, no matter what anxieties were going through, brothers sisters, no matter what feeling of dread and foreboding. We might have God is on our side, The God Who can raise the Dead is on our side.
- 48:37
And so she returned to Luke chapter 21, one last time. Look what Jesus says in. We will again, read verse 25. What is going to loosen us from the anxiety of the things that are coming into our world? Verse 25. Again, there would be signs in the sun and the moon stars and on the earth distress of nations in perplexity because of the Roaring of the Sea and the waves people fainting with fear and with foreboding of what is coming on the world, for the powers of heaven will be shaken and then they will see the son of man coming in a cloud with power and great Glory.
- 49:19
Now when these things begin to take place straighten up, Is the same word that that Jesus used in the mirror in the miracle straighten up. Raise your heads Because your Redemption your freedom, you’ll loosening from all these troubles is Drawing Near brothers and sisters. These should not be days of distress. These should not be days of anxiety.
- 49:48
These should not be days of Anguish, he should not be days of foreboding. These should not be days of fear. They should not be days of not seeing any way out. These are things brothers and sisters.
